Double Attack > Combo > Basic Attack

Basic attacks are good but combos give you extra damage on the finishing move if you can pull it off.

However, Double Attacks can do more damage than combos so prioritise a double attack if you can see it happening.

The Rider's notes in-game tells you the weapon combos, here are the combos:

To restore Hearts (The things you lose when you run out of HP in the game), go to your house and rest.

During battle, you can press the X button to increase animation speed by upto 3x.

Online Functionality
  • Challenge a friend in 1 vs. 1 battles via local wireless or online. You can set the rules and even earn experience and rewards.
  • Create QR codes to share your battle party with other players. Select the ”Battle Preparation" menu item under Network Battle to get started.
  • Streetpass other players to exchange Battle Party details, Rider Cards, and Monster Dens!
  • Battle Party – Players exchange details like Monsties and Equipment, then they can battle against the Streetpassed player's party at the Rider Arena
  • Rider Card – Share your card, which has customized titles and backgrounds
  • Monster Dens – Venture into a Streetpassed Monster Den to be able to forage for items and eggs, perhaps even of the rare variety...

DLC
  • No word on the updated, 1.2 version of the game coming West. Hopefully it does, but it seems odd to release the old version of the game so long after it came out in Japan.
  • Like the other Monster Hunter 3DS games, there are various additional quests and items you can download through a Palicoe located in your home village.

Just received my copy this morning, am looking forward to importing my demo data over the weekend and getting going.

Thanks for setting up the OP, I'll pop back when I've played a bit (and probably with a barrage of questions in tow!) :D

If anyone is looking to try it out, the free demo is really good and covers the first five hours or so of the game.

I really enjoyed the demo of this, but it made me get back into Generations and now I think I'm too addicted again to stop and play this. Really captures that MH feel while being a casual-focused turn-based JRPG.

lmao same here. Although I might have reached the point again where I'm out of ideas what sets to make. I really don't want to do all village quests to get the Hayabusa Feather ._.

The tips and tricks video from Game Taco is pretty handy.

I'll repost some hints from having played the demo:

Double Attack > Combo > Basic Attack

Basic attacks are good but combos give you extra damage on the finishing move if you can pull it off.

However, Double Attacks can do more damage than combos so prioritise a double attack if you can see it happening.

How you do a combo is just three basic attacks in a certain order. It does not matter which basic attacks you use (Power, Tech, Speed). Just do it in a certain order and you'll do a combo.

One example is Power -> Power -> Tech
Another is Power -> Tech -> Speed

You can use different basic attacks, it doesn't have to be the exact ones as those in that order.
E.g. Speed -> Speed -> Power is the same kind of combo as the first one.

Apparently there should be Hunter notes in the game for weapon combos.

To restore Hearts (The things you lose when you run out of HP in the game), go to your house and rest.

During battle, you can press the X button to increase animation speed by upto 3x.

Ooh this is helpful, especially the battle speed up button. Mind if I add this to the OT?

The OT title is pretty, pretty good.

Grabbing my copy after work today. The demo sure picked a nice cliffhanger to end it on.

Amazing thread title :D

I've been waiting for this game for so long, can't believe it's right around the corner. Apparently, my copy is delivered on Monday. Should be enough time for me to polish off Mario + Rabbids and Splatoon 2 over the weekend.

It's going to be weird going back to the 3DS. This should ease me in ready for Metroid :p

If not for M+R (which I'm still playing and enjoying) and Metroid next week, this would've been mine. Alas, I'll just have to wait until later in the year to pick this up. Until then, I'll just go through the demo in anticipation.

Edit:
Wait, there were MH Amiibo's released?

hmmm...

Anyone know how the story compares to the anime adaptation? I got maybe 10-15 episodes in and it felt like nothing was happening and they were still kind of training in their village. I grew pretty bored and dropped it.

I can't see the game lingering around that long in the beginning village, but I'm curious to know for sure.

Game should be delivered today. It's a miracle I finished Mario + Rabbids in time! Now we have to see how much I can get done before Samus Returns comes out next week....

By the way, the amiibo for this game are pretty awesome. I bought them before the game was even announced for localization, haha.

I'm just glad the amiibo are all of monsters I'm mostly neutral about, if they'd done ones for Khezu or Lagiacrus my wallet would be weeping. I'm still a little tempted to get one of the Rath figures but I think my preorder of the Metroid 2-pack means I've hit my monthly allowance for buying pointless crap.

That's a damn fine looking 3DS game. Gonna check out the demo and get the whole game if I dig it. Pretty sure I will.

From what i gatherd, the anime spends more time in the village in order to build up Cheval before the Nargacuga incident, which is why it takes so long

Do I receive something special for going through the demo? My copy will get delivered later today, but I will start via the demo if there is enough incentive.

I got a cute costume for Navirou.
It's the beginning of the game and your save transfers so no reason not to do it I guess.

So despite the amiibo functionality, they're not bringing the amiibo over at all? That's pretty bizarre.

I mean, I had figured maybe they just didn't want to talk about it to diminish the Metroid/other amiibo announced at the time, but this is super sad. I really wanted to get them, but didn't want to pay the import fees. I shoulda hopped on the ami ami deal the other week, but they're all gone now.

I mean...it's not that hard to slap the monster name and new logo on the box, right?

What's the updated version?

They released a patch for the game and an updated retail version back in July (I think?), and this is what it added:

•Newly added Otomon (monsters) – Teostra, Kushala Daora, and Rajang have been added.
•Additional parts to customize your appearance and the ability to change your gender – You can change your gender at your house, allowing you to try out each gender’s armor. Customization parts that reflect the appearance of characters that appear in the game, as well as equipment that lets you change completely into them have also been added. Parts have also been added that allow you to change your appearance to look like Hakum Village Riders Jini, Hyoro, and Mil from the TV anime Monster Hunter Stories: Ride On.
•Otomon previously only available as downloadable content now obtainable at the “Monster Nest” after clearing the game – Oroshi Kirin, White Monoblos, Glavenus, and Molten Tigrex can be obtained.
•Monster Hunter XX Save Data Bonus – If you have save data from Monster Hunter XX on your 3DS, you will get a Barufaruku costume for Nabiru.
Nothing game changing, especially since I believe we're still getting the download quests for the monsters they mentioned in the third bullet point, but man, I really do want a Teostra mount. I'm sure most would want the gender swap option, especially since Monster Hunter has always been big on creating unique appearance for each armor depending on the gender.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the info!

Yeah, would have been nice to have. Hopefully they push a free update sooner rather than later.

The game is much faster paced than the anime. You can linger around in the village for a while doing all optional quests, but it's all after a certain event that actually starts the story for real but that takes more than 10 episodes to happen in the anime.

The anime wanted to make people connect more to the village, the Rathalos and Cheval, but they kind of forgot they needed a hook for the show if they wanted to make stories taking place before the game's actual beginning.

Just entered my DLC code for the monsters that came with my purchase from Nintendo UK, and I also apparently received two more items (including a rustshard?) for having save data from MH Generations on the system, in addition to the outfit for having played the demo! Great stuff.

So I will be able to get a Glavenus even if we don't get the patch? This is the main thing I care about, it's my favorite mon.
