More than 40% of all US PS5 and Xbox play time last month was spent on 10 live service games

More than 40% of the total time spent playing PS5 or Xbox Series X/S games in the US last month was spent on 10 live service games.

That’s according to Mat Piscatella, the executive director and video game industry analyst at Circana (formerly NPD).

In a thread on Bluesky, Piscatella pointed out that more than 70% of active PS5 and Xbox Series X users in the US played at least one of the top 10 live service games in January.

While some of these players may have simply tried the game then moved onto something else, these 10 live service games have been popular enough to command a combined 40% of all play time spent across the entire PS5 and Xbox Series X/S libraries last month.

Piscatella notes that the statistics may be concerning for the developers and publishers of other games, because the total US video game market spending, total players and total hours all peaked in 2021 and “the pace of games being released hasn’t slowed”.

As such, the pool of potential players isn’t getting larger, and if many of them are spending a lot of time on the same 10 live service games that reduces the amount of time being spent trying out other titles, in particular new releases.

“A lot is riding on the new products coming to market this year to hopefully combat or reverse some of these trends,” Piscatella noted, presumably referring to the Switch 2 and numerous upcoming AAA games.

“Used to be that players would jump from big game to big game to some other games but they were most often to moving to something new. That they purchased,” he added. “Now, the live service games suck out a ton of available time, and it’s hard to beat free if it’s good. So. Here we are.”

Last year an annual games industry report highlighted the growing influence a group of fewer, older video games have over consumers’ annual playtime. According to the data, just 66 titles accounted for 80 percent of all playtime in 2023, and 60 percent was spent in games that are six years old or older.

Five older games— Fortnite, GTA V, League of Legends, Minecraft, and Roblox —accounted for 27% of all playtime in 2023, according to games data platform Newzoo.

Doesn't surprise me in the slightest, my son still plays Fortnite, Roblox and Sea of Thieves with his friends and when he's not playing those 3 games he's replaying the Fallout games lol he's zero interest in modern gaming

You don't want to go down this road with us. We all know that PC gaming metadata is so dogshit that it is to embarrassing to talk about. You are seeing GOOD numbers here. Pretty much any PC gaming metadata that concerns PC gamers behavior is always beyond WTF in the worst possible way. Like how many PC gamers have ever bought a full priced $60.00+ single player game that came out within the last year from the date of purchase.

We are still 60% strong on console, so you wanna take the Pepsi challenge on PC go ahead but you aren't gonna like the numbers you dig up and what people are counting as a PC gamer.

i dunno what is Pisscatella deal.

The same can be said about movies like:

80% of the revenue comes from blockbusters/Sequesl/Established IPs. And no one is bitching about it.

Well don't forget, it's 40% for just the top 10. You have to imagine that if you expand to the top 20-25, you're looking at a sizeable majority of time spent on live service games.

It's not a death knell to SP games in and of itself; live service MPs have disproportionate time engagement, SPs have disproportionate money engagement as compared to the time spent; but it does put things into perspective.

You can only say "fuck X company" so much if consumers are throwing their time, attention and money largely behind live services. It means that SP games have to hit. They have to be of exultant quality. Which means expensive.

Pretty sure this is data derived from Circana's tiny panel and extrapolated. It usually is. Not commenting on the validity of what he's saying here, it seems pretty fucking obvious anyway, but when ps and xbox have their own charts (xbox live, ps reported monthly) there's really little need to expend energy discussing Mat's guesses from 15 minute automated friends list snapshots, especially when previous analysis has shown it to be somewhat misleading.

The actual useful and interesting info here might be what the other 60% of players are up to away from the evergreen GaaS monsters, but you know, that wouldn't help put forward his doom and gloom scenario and drive engagement.

It's likely to be worse. I'm not joking.
Probably more different GAAS but also a higher overall percentage. Consoles don’t have juggernauts like CS, DOTA, or LoL.

I'm assuming the above took into account all platforms considering League of Legends is in there. As for what people on console are playing, it's evident from the top played games that live service games are very popular for many people. It explains why companies like Sony were so dead set on developing their own live service titles too.

All this is known data. As panda-zebra panda-zebra said, it would be far more interesting to see what the other 60% are playing. I'd also be curious to see whether that 40% fluctuates in response to certain events.

Gamers are partially to blame on the sorry ass state of the current gaming market. They keep buying the shitty DLC/micro transactions, They keep buying the same game like Call of Duty, Madden, NBA, etc. every year with little change. You can't tell anyone what to spend their money on but this garbage keeps making these companies money so do not expect much to change in the near future. It sucks green donkey dicks but it is what it is.
