I don't like this movie.

However screw anyone that gave this a bad rating. The film was masterfully made. Every thing down to the acting, direction, editing and script was masterfully done.

This will be a cult classic and that's why I dislike it.

This film was made to be a cult classic. I give this movie 9/10 and I would not see it again.
 
You know, people say the movie was marketed incorrectly...but how would you market this in a 30 second trailer that would accurately represent the movie?

You really can't. Especially because there is no twist moment the movie is building to, where suddenly it's all revealed, something you can hint to or provide a glimpse of. At best, there's one very telling line at the end. Accurate representation requires the context of the movie and its events

When I start thinking about this film with the three yous it becomes annoying. The Director/Writer sees himself as
God
. The comparison has to be drawn. This felt like watching a director jerk off about how deep he was. If I hadn't know the Director/Writer wasn't the same person, I might have enjoyed it more. That's why I gave the film a good rating. Overall I enjoyed it, but it left annoyed.

Nah, it's almost the opposite. I like going to see weird films because it gives me something to talk about. I love discussing films with other people. I like looking for the subtlety in the direction, lighting, sound, script, acting, ect.

There is nothing subtle about this movie except the beginning. I was really enjoying how many interpretations you could get. But then it pretty much just tells you what they are and it left me with nothing.

As a film this A/A+ level film making. To me personally, it left me empty.

I don't know what that says about me. This is the first time ever that I've felt like this. I recognize the skill and talent used in the film, but have felt dissatisfied by the end.

Hahaha this is exactly me outside of it being a cult classic. Not sure what you mean about that. I hated the movie but can appreciate it for what it is.

It does, narratively. Just don't expect a horror movie or a thriller. The story in the trailer - a man and wife in their home where strangers begin inexplicably showing up and weird surreal things happen - is essentially what happens in the movie, but the context of the movie recontextualizes what you see in the trailer

But it's not a horror movie.
 
As a generally open-minded film goer and a huge Aronofsky fan...

I absolutely fucking hated it.

I would have given it an F, too.

Hmmm, well to be honest I was definitely expecting a horror because of how they marketed this but now I know I should expect something else. Which is fine, I got a subscription to my cinema anyway and I can go to whatever movie I want as much as I want. Will definitely check it out along with Wind River and other movies.

The trailer is dishonest as fuck in the way the editing is done. Don't expect it to be like the trailer shown before IT.

If you want to see an allegorical arthouse film, see it. If you want to see home invasion/horror, skip it.

It's like seeing a painting in an art museum. The painting is exquisite, you can tell that this goes beyond technical details, that real thought was put into it.

But you don't like it. You can still appreciate it for what it is, but you can still say personally, you don't like it.

To be honest I don't know why. I think it might be because the director and the male lead are pretty much one in the same character wise. Even then I don't think that's really it.

If art is to make you think, then this film has done that. I don't know why I dislike this movie. But I sure as hell can tell you that on every level this film was superbly done.

The Thing, Christine, Blade Runner, The Big Lebowski, movies like Akita or the original ghost in the shell, and hundreds if not thousands of actual movies in the past would like to have a word with you. They only come out of their cult classic status when a movie studio tries to reap off their cult classic status and attempt a relaunch.

I loved Mother! and I can see why people struggled with the film vs how it was marketed and why it would struggle to find its audience that would lead to such a low feedback score.

Mother!'s trailer is going to make a great case study for not having one of 'those trailers' that give you every plot point including the ending in the trailer and how that can affect the cinema going public that see it.

It irks me when I see a romcom trailer that shows the act 2 break up and the act 3 reconciliation in the trailer but then I remember the movie The Break Up mostly memorable for the fact the couple don't get back together in the end (lol spoilers) and I knew a few people who felt betrayed by the ending and hated the movie as a result. Sometimes people want to know exactly what they are going to see, comfort food and all that.

She is one of the biggest though but biggest is a huge LOL. Even the Cruise missile stumbles a bit at times for example.


I need to watch this movie though lol Stuckmann dug it, and other than him overrating CBM a massive amount, I have a similar like/dislike preference as him.

The problem with Lawrence is her star power is largely a result of a single franchise. Someone like Tom Cruise has decades of hits. You might as well say Emma Watson is the biggest star since there were more Harry Potter films and at least she has Beauty and that Beast.

We've seen with these single movie/franchise stars that audiences don't follow them to other stuff. Lawrence, Pattinson, Stewart, the Hemsworth Bros., that dude who played Jacob in Twilight... their fans don't show up, because their fans are fans of the IP, not the actor.

I loved the trailer when I saw it in the cinema. The trailed is really well done and it has good actors in it. It was love at first sight. I wanted to see it.

But then I saw the movie...

It's TRASH. Remember that pretentious hipster girl on youtube that inserts something in her vagina and talks some dirt gibberish during the act? Give her 35mln budget and she would probably make the same movie.

I actually wanted to run outside and go home.

Unlike Watson (so far), Lawrence has been able to take her kid franchise and follow it up with notable and Academy Award winning roles in several films. And Lawrence's overall media and global presence is far larger than Watson's, for example.

You can't find a magazine that hasn't had Lawrence's face on it this year (which is part of the marketing problem this particular film has, actually).

Watson, to her credit, is also one of the biggest young stars in Hollywood right now. Her name alone can also command a big check. Her name + [insert major director] probably couldn't get a major studio to fund an art house film for millions, however.

hahahahaha hilarious that that's the first thing you went to for the "pretentious" comparison. you're overreacting a little. it's half a good movie.
 
I would consider myself a cinephile and can sit through movies that would put people to sleep but I always found Aronofsky extremely pretentious. Too heavy handed in his approach to symbolism and allegory seems more of the same really.

This definitely seems to be in the vein of The Wrestler and Black Swan where it's (in part) looking at the way creative types can be really fucked up.

That's how I described it to my wife. I told her "It belongs in a museum!" Kind of like Salo, I appreciate the art but don't want to see it again.

I think a film is more comparable to a book than a painting. and if an author writes beautifully but tells a really bad story, it's still a shitty book
