But seriously:

You don't find yourself, you create yourself.

The only thing I know is that I don't know anything.

Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people.

When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty, I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

I've had a little bout of depression lately, so I made myself this wallpaper. Reading it all the time has been a bit helpful. Kudos if you know where they're from.

I've always thought that this line is 100% bullshit.

You have NO regrets? None at all? Being positive and confident is one thing, being delusional is another.

I think it's meant to suggest that living with regret is stupid. It's a "go ahead and let yourself be happy" motto, not a supposed fact about someone's psychology.

"Why do it today if it can be done tomorrow ?"

I'm a huge procrastinator. I've got a paper on football in dictatorships to send to my teacher before midnight (4 hours left) and 100 pages of international relations to learn for tomorrow's exam :(

Yea.

1. A phrase my great grandmother used to say, and then my grandfather, and my father, and now it defines everything I do..."Things that you do, do with all your might. Because things done by half, are never done right."

2. My father went to West Point and I was basically raised to follow their short and simple honor code..."I will not lie, cheat or steal; nor tolerate those who do."

3. I find the poem "Grin" by Robert Service to be inspirational, and there have been many times where I've had life throw me curve balls and have just followed the advice of this poem:

If you're up against a bruiser and you're getting knocked about --

Grin.

If you're feeling pretty groggy, and you're licked beyond a doubt --

Grin.

Don't let him see you're funking, let him know with every clout,
Though your face is battered to a pulp, your blooming heart is stout;
Just stand upon your pins until the beggar knocks you out --

And grin.

This life's a bally battle, and the same advice holds true

Of grin.

If you're up against it badly, then it's only one on you,

So grin.

If the future's black as thunder, don't let people see you're blue;
Just cultivate a cast-iron smile of joy the whole day through;
If they call you "Little Sunshine", wish that THEY'D no troubles, too --

You may -- grin.

Rise up in the morning with the will that, smooth or rough,

You'll grin.

Sink to sleep at midnight, and although you're feeling tough,

Yet grin.

There's nothing gained by whining, and you're not that kind of stuff;
You're a fighter from away back, and you WON'T take a rebuff;
Your trouble is that you don't know when you have had enough --

Don't give in.

If Fate should down you, just get up and take another cuff;
You may bank on it that there is no philosophy like bluff,

And grin.

I'm sure there are others, but those are the main three. Hope they can inspire others like they've inspired me.

Love the one in the bottom right, and I very much enjoyed its source material earlier this fall. As for mine...

"Never tell me the odds."

I like Tim Ferris' line:

Love, Be Loved and Never Stop Learning

I was saying that line to. Of course I have regrets but I try to use that line when I'm in a situation and I'm worrying about an outcome. Just fucking go for it. If you fail, you fail. I just don't want to see myself worrying about not doing anything 5 hours from then.

I also find myself falling back on an old Edison quote. It's recorded as

"If I find 10,000 ways something won't work, I haven't failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward."

or

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

"I prefer silent vice to ostentatious virtue." - Albert Einstein

"Be a philosopher; but, amidst all your philosophy, be still a man." -David Hume

"When you want to rock hard, children, lean on F#." -Tom Morello

Never trust a 43 year old Chinese man named "Trevor" who wears Daisy Duke shorts and plays Guitar Hero.

- Riff Raff SODMG
