Mottos/phrases you live by

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Also, back in high school Coach Finstock gave me this gem: It doesn't matter how you play the game, it's whether you win or lose. And even that doesn't make all that much difference.

"You will always miss 100% of the shots you don't take" - Wayne Gretzky.

I'm not even a hockey fan but I just found that to be very powerful, and as someone who was always afraid to take a chance, it has helped me immensely.

Yes that's one of my favorites as well.

You eat a ton of shit before you die.

What's the worst that could happen.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

"A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval."
- Mark Twain

"Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! Now if you know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain't you! You're better than that!"
- Rocky Balboa. Really long, but I think it's a good one.

"Eighty percent of success is showing up."
- Woody Allen

But seriously:

The irony of that is almost unbearable.

The most true thing I know:
This too shall pass.

No matter when you say it or what's going on, in good times and bad...

This too shall pass.

I`ve always been fond of that Gladiator tagline: What We Do In Life Echoes In Eternity

Shut up and do it

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

also:

Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things.

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference."

Just without the God bit. Knowing when you can and cannot effect change is a huge stress-reliever. If you can recognize when you're not in control of a situation there's no point in worrying about the outcome, and if you are in control of the situation it will be a breeze so long as you have confidence in yourself.

Ask me a year or two back and it was: "Dance like it hurts, love like you need money, work when people are watching." - Scott Adams

But now it is:

"You'll never get what you want if you always go for what you've got." These were words that just came to me one day, an epiphany I suppose. It was only about a month ago, but it has really put things in perspective for me.

The second is a quote that really caught my attention that Gaius said from BSG:
Never enough money, fame, women. The more you want, the more you need, the more you want. There's always a hunger, more money, greater fame, different women. .... There is a certain futility in centering one's entire life around trying to satisfy appetites that can truly never be sated.

Last but not least: "Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships an decide not to surrender, that is strength." - Arnold Schwarzenegger

This too. And I`m neither a hockey fan

I would have to say this and a couple things I heard Tony Robbins say really impacted me more in the last 20 years than anything anyone else has said.

I got the feeling that Stallone was REALLY heartfelt about what he was saying there. I mean the dude is a star now but lets be honest he had/has a fucked up face in a world where you are judged constantly on looks. He worked his ass off in every way. May not love him but god damn he has worked so fucking hard its crazy.
