Only one really: Respect starts with you.
I learned pretty early on that people can say some pretty awful or untrue things about you based solely on things such as religious beliefs, where you grew up, or what sort of hobbies or interests you had. At first, I was incredibly bitter and sort of argumentative about it. Then I took a look deeper and began to just smile and let it go. I realized that these people, regardless of their beliefs have probably gone through similar experiences as I have based on whatever their own personal beliefs were. I realized the more I just set myself up to be a better person, loving and respecting others and just generally making it a more comfortable environment for people to be around me, the happier I was with myself and the more people were generally more respectful with me.
