Movie ticket prices have really gotten out of control in the last ~five years.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
I was pumped for Suicide Squad after the first trailer dropped, and I had faith in Leto. Unfortunately, with each trailer released, my hype dwindled. After the reviews and user reactions, I no longer was excited.

That said, it's a billion degrees outside and I love going to the movies, regardless. So my wife and I said "eh, it's not great, but it gives us something to do," and so I looked for tickets.

Now, I'll admit; I love being able to buy tickets from my phone/computer ahead of time. And reserving seats is a Godsend. But these prices are out of control.

~$12 for 2D only showings, and of course, 2D shows have the worst fucking times imagineable, and have way less showings.

$16.50 for the typical 3D showing everywhere. And even a little more for IMAX or Fork & Screen, sofa seats, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I love the movies and I go all the time. And yes, you can find SOME theaters still do matinees and you can get in for $7 or $8 before noon-ish.

But man, ~$32+ for just the tickets sure makes it hard to "splurge" and see a movie you know you're not going to like. I'm convinced that this - in addition to the middling reviews - is why we've seen a reduction in box office draws this year. I don't know how a family of 4 does it.

Yeah, it's pretty brutal. A couple local theaters do 5/5.50 Tuesdays but it's an absolute shitshow trying to get seats for movies that just came out :/

Back when I was in high school (03-07) movie tickets were like $8.50 at their cheapest, and like $9.25 by the time I left.

Fast forward almost 10 years later and tickets are $17 for fancy seats, $13.50 for regular.

I only do matinees. The theater isn't crowded, it's easier to drop my daughter off with my folks or in laws on a Saturday/Sunday morning, and the price is only $6 at a few theaters in town. You'd have to be a sultan to take your family out anymore.

In high school I went to the movies every weekend. Prices were maybe $7-8 and only $5 with a student ID.

Only see movies in theaters three or so times a year because of this, and only at the fancy amc with the reclining seats.

We still have 6.50 matinees here, and Tuesdays are cheap all day. But yeah $11+ for buying prime time 2D tickets online.

Saw SS today and was dying of thirst so I had by one of their small waters for 5 bucks. 9 bucks. I buy whole cases of water for less than 5 bucks lol. Tickets were only 9 each which is fine.

Yeah it can be nuts if you just want to go on a whim on a random day. Stuff like $5 Tuesdays are pretty good, or early showings when it's cheaper, but that's not as impromptu and can be way less easy. I subscribe to Moviepass so it's like $30 a month to see any 2D movie that releases (currently at 61 movies in theater so far this year), but it's not for everyone.

The increase is why I only see movies at the $2 theater or drive-in. Our drive-in shows 2 new releases for $8 a person, with groupon deals often making it even cheaper. I can't imagine paying $10-12 for one movie ever again, unless it's a special occasion (Star Wars).

I don't know I don't find it to be that expensive. When I pay 12.50 for a ticket I'm surprised it's that low. All the theaters around me have super set ups with reclining chairs so I think it's worth the money.

I usually go during specials. Tuesday I can get a normal ticket for $5, digital 3D for like 7.50, and 3D with D-Box reserved seating for $15.50.

I'm usually disappointed during Friday or Saturday showings. But even on Saturday, I can go see a non-3D movie for $9 a head.

We used to have a dollar theater a couple blocks away, which was nice for catching stuff I missed. I'd go there sometimes just because. One time I even treated my entire dorm to a showing of Scott Pilgrim as a bonding event.

$5 tuesdays for me, never had trouble with crowds either. It helps that i work 3rd shift and i can go early afternoon.

Yea I live in NYC and it sucks . My girl and I hit up local indie theaters to see more art house and foreign films because the regular films in the movie theaters are too expensive in comparison the the small theaters showing alternative films . I think the only big films we plan on seeing this year are The Birth of A Nation and Rogue One . We mostly just watch stuff at home and I much prefer that anyway .

This is the reason I only go to watch movies in theaters three times a year (one horror, one action, and one comedy).

With home theaters and TV series I just do not see the point of spending so much for a movie unless it is something you absolutely want to see on an even bigger screen. Honestly à lot of TV shows are better than movies too, and you can't beat the comfort of your own place. And I'm not even talking about the outragious prices for sodas and popcorn.

7.50, dollar less than an adult, for a student here in town. 3-D is maybe $2 more. Don't live in a big town and the theater isn't a big brand company owned like The Grand but the theater itself isn't complete crap inside so it's solid.

Rarely do my family and I go to other theaters where it's at least $10 a ticket. If we do it's because we're on vacation and looking for something to do on a rainy day.

Yeah the movie has to be really good for me to go.. Even though SS will be an exception.. I dont buy anything else.

Depends on the city. Where I currently am in Ontario, general 2D admission is $10. It was that price a decade ago as well. Of course IMAX runs a $6 surcharge. 3D is an extra $3.

Nah, I don't really think so.

And that applies all the time.
:)
And all my other local theaters charge between $7-10 depending in what times you go. Not too terrible IMO.

I wait for the movies to come to Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime.

Having a VPN to access different regions makes this much easier as some movies comes out earlier for different regions.

I don't think we even have matinee screenings anymore in Toronto.

Some places charge 30 for IMAX lol.

I have a fairly large family, so going to the movies can easily set us back $50-75 depending on what we're watching. We went to see Star Wars TFA and we easily spent over $100 on tickets and food.

I can get matinee tickets for 8.75 at the reserve fancy seats. These seats are not really seats but like a 2 person sofa (no middle arm rest) with electric recline buttons.
