Movie ticket prices have really gotten out of control in the last ~five years.

Matinee is the same as its Rotten Tomatoes score!

Remind me never to go wherever the hell you are!

I don't go often to the cinema at it feels like the cinema I usually go to increased it's price by 5€ over the last 2 years. I always go WTF everytime I go ordering a ticket online and most of the time I just don't bother with that anymore.

Cost me $55 bucks to see Ghostbusters with my girl on opening weekend, in Los Angeles AFTER a promo code.

The worst part is almost all new movies fucking suck ass, too. So you know its going to suck ass, and you pay for it anyway.

So I'm not the only one who thinks this? Cool.

Man are tickets really that expensive in Boston? Or is that a special theater? With good very good seatings and maybe free food?

This cinema has decent seats with overpriced food on menu. You get that small popcorn and some voucher you can use towards a meal or drink.

Most normal ticket pricing is $12-18 roughly at other cinemas.

Varies wildly around us. The most expensive is the VIP, 21 and up auditoriums at the local Regal. Those end up being $21.50 apiece after online purchas fees etc. But worth it to us for no kids/teens, craft beer, nice recliner style seats etc.

Cheapest well do occasionally is a crappy AMC in a crummy mall in a poorer suburb where the matinees are $6.50 each.

I got a second run theater in my town, tickets are $2.50 all day, every day. Movies are a little older, but its not too bad.

But man, ~$32+ for just the tickets sure makes it hard to "splurge" and see a movie you know you're not going to like. I'm convinced that this - in addition to the middling reviews - is why we've seen a reduction in box office draws this year. I don't know how a family of 4 does it.
Families either hit up the drive-in or the local cheap theater with matinee tickets.
Hell, I could go watch Suicide Squad for $4.50 Canadian on Tuesday.

There are plenty of new movies that don't "fucking suck ass". They're just not the ones everyone is rushing out to see on opening weekend like Ghostbusters, Jason Bourne, The Secret Life of Pets, Captain America: Civil War or Suicide Squad.

Mass market has shit taste and flock to garbage films due to marketing. Those garbage films pay the bills so great independent and art house films get to be made.

In my corner of Ontario tickets have been $10 for as long as I can remember, and $13 for 3D. Growing up we had a second run theater called Three-star Cinema and tickets were dirt cheap, and so was food. You could see a movie, get popcorn, pop, and a chocolate bar for like $8.

I rarely go to the movies any more. It's hard to justify the cost of the tickets when I can wait a few months and pay less money to own it. Even 4K blu-rays are cheaper than movie tickets.

They're really not that bad unless maybe you're going to the theatre every week. I'd be willing to spend $20 on a ticket.

Now though I only have to spend $6.75 because the big cinemas give hospital employees a 50% discount (I get a free medium popcorn too).

I go for matinees and 3-5 showings on the weekend, when the tickets cause $7 tops (usually 5-6). As for top tier prices, I've seen it go from 10-11 but only a dollar increase in a couple years. Not that bad for me.

Its been around $10 at the decent theaters here in Birmingham, AL for about 10 years now.

Lie-max being $16+ is the crazy part(especially considering the real IMAX down town is $14)

Snacks are crazy now though.
Large popcorn is on track to hit $10 within a year. Large drinks jump 25 cents every few months.
A freaking hotdog is like $5 now.

Yep they are ridiculous in NYC. I really only pay for a few movies a year, but I'll only see them in IMAX or AMC Prime. I'm lucky enough to be dating someone who gets invited to lots of screenings and I've got friends who get me into them as well. So I've been able to see quite a few movies for free the last few years. And it's a lot better to see a bad movie for free than paying $18/person for it.

No joke. It's a few bucks cheaper to pay for a roundtrip bus to New Jersey and watch a movie than to see it in New York.

A local franchise has a monopoly on theaters around here, charging $10 a ticket ($12 on opening night), and an obscene amount more for concessions. Thankfully they have $5 tickets every day before 11am and on Tuesdays, in addition to free popcorn. At this point that's pretty much the only time I go to movies anymore.

Edit: Reading through this thread I think I'm actually lucky

$16. 50 CAD in Toronto. It's been up in my recent memory, but I don't see many movies in theatres for that reason.

Ticket+Popcorn+Softdrink = 20 Euro ($22) where I live.
About 12 Euro ($13) for the ticket and 8 Euro ($9) for Popcorn and Softdrink.

Not cheap, but I only have to pay for myself, so it's still ok. If I had to pay for a family of four though...don't think we'd see more than two movies a year :S

I just save my money and wait for the Blu-ray release, then have a movie night at home.

Makes way more sense in my mind.

This summer has been really disappointing. A few goods, lots of meh, and some real stinkers.
I've given out two 8s for wide releases at the box office this summer season... to Star Trek Beyond and The Nice Guys (the latter being a 7.5 I rounded up).

Everything else - Captain America: Civil War, Central Intelligence, The Conjuring 2, Finding Dory, Ghostbusters, Independence Day: Resurgence, Jason Bourne, The Shallows - I've scored worse. Heck, I've given FOUR of those films a rating of 4.5/10 or lower. That's pretty lousy.

I do the same. Though if there's a movie that I want to get the "movie theater experience", I don't mind shelling out the cash to see it.

I agree.

Tuesdays $6.50 all the time for me.

Ain't nobody got the time and money for anything else.

You don't have the audience at home though. For most movies I admit that's more of an advantage than a disadvantage, but for select movies it can make the experience so much better.

For example, I watched One Piece Film Gold in cinema recently. Ran for one day, one of four or five screenings in the entire state. Naturally the audience was only composed of fans. Everyone was in a great mood for the entire movie and many gags had all of us in stitches. That's something I won't get to experience when I buy the BluRay and watch it alone at home in a couple months.

In London there are cinemas which charge like £16-20 for tickets, it's a complete joke!

Personally I have a Cineworld Unlimited card for £16.40 a month which gives me access to as many movies as I want but without that I would barely go and see anything.

Thats the thing though... Ive been let down the last few times I shelled out for a movie theater experience. Home theater tech has gotten so good and cheap.

Some people have audio setups that sound better than going to a live symphony.

I'm patient. I wait a couple of weeks and go to the matinee showings on $5 Tuesday. I also have self control so social media doesn't spoil me. It's pretty great!

I don't go to the cinema often but I'm lucky I get a discount via my work so I can get UK cinema tickets for about £6.50-£7.00 where the normal prices range from £9-£11.

Also I'm wondering do American chains do an unlimited subscription like places like Cineworld and Odeon do in the UK? For less than £200 a year you can see literally as many movies as you like. You need to pay a small extra for 3D or IMAX screenings I believe. I've not got one myself but as I get older it seems like a good value proposition. I do want to see way more films and keep up with what's out there, the good and the bad, but I ain't paying up to £10 a film. If you even watch two films a month that subscription pays for itself!

Our movie tickets now are still pretty cheap but the way our theatre work have made it so you have to consider fees as well.

Our tickets for 2D at my local regal are $8.50 matinee or $10.59 normally. 3D are $12.50 matinee and $14.27. Then because it's reserved seating with awesome recliners (make the price worth it) you have to pre-order your seats fairly well in advance tacking on another $1.75

Costco in Canada is the best deal for movie tickets. They sell a pass for $24, gives you two adult tickets, two popcorns and two drinks.

lol its by area definitely my local place is 4.50 before 5 and 7.50 for adults after that. and they have an 11am showing..
most of the time i go to the 11am on sunday and almost no one is there

There is a movie theater near my parents in the Catskills that has movies for like 2 bucks on some days. New ones too, I have no clue how they stay open. I saw Whiplash there.
