Just a very mean-spirited and very unfunny film. And the cast and premise are both great, not to mention that I've long taken interest in dark comedy and especially satire. It just failed on every level for me.

The Other Side Of Hope [trailer]

After having watched Channel Criswell's video essay on Aki Kaurismaki's films of deadpan and miserabilist comedy, I had to check out the director's latest (and apparently last) film. Although this seems his most hopeful and quick-witted film yet. Well, as quick-witted as you can get with still shots and understated acting.

The world isn't as misanthropic as expected. For a tale about a Syrian refugee ending up in Finland and colliding with a restaurant's new grumpy owner quite literally, it's obviously relevant and doesn't shy away from the racism. Khaled's (Sherwan Haji) journey to get asylum is mind-numbingly Kafkaesque and empathy-inducing. Sherwan's stern yet determined face is a delight to watch, as he tries to reconnect with his sister, and there develops a gang of other Finns helping him along the way to make for an almost feel-good affair. If you're a fan of Yorgos Lanthimos, Roy Andersson, or Todd Solondz, this is an easy recommendation.

Oof, only watched 5 films in May. I knew it was a slow month but I didn't realize I'd done that badly. Though the new Twin Peaks series is partly to blame. I'm out of town the first two weekends in June so I fear this month won't be much better.

I DVR'd a lot of the giant monster B-movies that TCM were running throughout the month, though that one scarcely fits that description since the titular monster is human-sized the entire way through.

And for the record, The Giant Behemoth fits that description better, since it is literally a remake of The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, though it's more uninspired than it is shitty.

June is gonna be a terrific month for new releases. Baby Driver, It Comes At Night, Okja and The Beguiled. Wonder Woman might just be solid. More Twin Peaks counts too.

Best movie I watched in May was Lost City of Z. Didn't watch anything else worth noting really.

Yeah I'm gonna get on Straight Story soon. Haven't seen it in years. Back then I think I dismissed it as being too conventional for him since I was only interested in his movies for the weird, but that's stupid. Should rewatch soon.

Saw both of these a few days ago. Breakfast was a little overrated to me (I still enjoyed it a lot). Hated Audrey and WhatsHisFace's characters for most of the time, but the final 10 minutes including the ending redeemed them for me.

Moulin - Dunno why through all these years I thought I had seen it already, turned out I hadn't. Loved the frenetic pace and it took me a lot of time to finish it because I kept replaying the Roxanne scene over and over after it happened. Now I've seen everything Luhrmann has ever done, except Strictly Ballroom. Moulin was the only time where I felt Baz actually felt inspired and was killing it with every scene.

Edit - ^ I love that about Moulin Rouge too, that frenetic off the wall craziness. I have much of the soundtrack on various playlists, too. "Because We Can" is an excellent song when you're on the elliptical.

Zodiac: I'm not one for serial killers and sociopaths, but this is based on a true story, so that got me more interested. Surprisingly, the Zodiac isn't in this much. In fact, his last scene is about an hour in. The movie is really a mystery movie. It's about the obsession and frustration on the inability to pin down a suspect. How the case that goes cold over time (there's even a timelapse of building the Transamerica Pyramid) and how it tears apart the people investigating it. Obsession's one heck of a drug. Good movie, but it's long.

That picnic scene though. One of the scariest things I've ever seen in a film.

1. Passengers - It's not the best but it scratched the space vibe that I like really hard so it gets my number one for May.

These two really put up a good battle for the top spot but Jennifer Lawrence's boobs in zero g won out

4. Makkhi - This crazy Bollywood film will not soon be forgotten
5. Desk Set - A giant IBM ad from the 50's but I loved its charm and actually can see myself watching this around Christmas since it culminates around the holidays.

Zodiac is Fincher's masterpiece. Too long? Every time I watch Zodiac I'm ready for another watch. I just keep wishing it never ends and we can keep going deeper down that rabbit hole.

Zodiac is amazing. I agree that it's far and away Fincher's best, which isn't taking anything away from his other movies. Zodiac is just that great.

I mean realistically, *almost* any of Fincher's movies are worthy of being considered his best work; you can't really go wrong with Fincher.

I even enjoyed his weaker movies like Panic Room and Benjamin Button upon rewatching them.

Colossal (2017): Surely the best film ever made about a woman who discovers that by standing in the middle of a children's park in her home town at a certain point in the morning she causes a giant monster to appear in Seoul that mimics her actions to destructive effect. Who says originality in movies is dead? Though considering Colossal's extremely low box office, we have some evidence as to why some people think it's on life support.

Colossal initially seems like it is primarily going to use the monster as a sort of heightened drama about the perils of alcoholism, but

by the halfway point it has changed markedly in its focus and tone, instead becoming a piercing examination of the personality of an abusive, deeply petty man who tries to control and demean everyone in his life, particularly the woman whose affection he feels entitled to

. It's quite pointed, interesting writing.

If the movie has a flaw, it's in the handling of two of its supporting characters, Garth and Joel, who are let in on the big secret, but then have basically nothing to say

about the final dramas that ensue, in a way that just doesn't feel like it works to me. I've seen arguments that Joel's character is meant to stand in for a certain type of passive man, but if that's the ended metaphor, I don't think it works on a literal level within the narrative, as his character ends up shrugging off the fact that Oscar is a mass-murderer on an ongoing basis.

Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis both give superb performances, with the latter distinguishing himself for the first time as a dramatic actor, as far as I'm concerned. For the first time seeing him onscreen in a serious role I wasn't half-waiting for the film to become a Saturday Night Live parody.

Wonder Woman (2017): Discussed in the review thread, but in brief, very good. I'm so happy.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992): How many cancelled TV series get, not just a film followup, but an R-rated film followup? It's quite an odd product, in many ways, though perhaps that's to be expected from Lynch. The early parts focusing on

the investigation of B.O.B.'s first killing

are uninteresting, particularly since it concludes with a detail that you would think would warrant mentioning in the earlier series. But the core of the story, focused on Laura Palmer, is really strong, and it's laudable that after Laura's death drove the narrative of Twin Peaks and we were told a lot about her by other people, Lynch opted to make Laura a real character in her own right. The tonal shift from the show is notable, but suited to the rather depressing story we know will unfold. In the midst of all the returning castmembers, the schedule-mandated recasting of Donna (now played by Moira Kelly) sticks out like a sore thumb, though even on a writing level Donna feels like a rather different character.

Saw Wonder Woman with the gf and some of our friends.

Best act of heroism I've seen from a super hero movie, awesome action, killer soundtrack (the Wonder Woman theme is the best superhero theme song EVER), good pacing.

Very lopsided exposition heavy intro, atrocious minor cast, tremendous misfire for the casting of the major villain. At least Dr. Poison was cool.

Overall a good experience, but I liked BvS and Suicide Squad a lot more.

Oh and my girlfriend took us to see it at the Alamo Drafthouse and yeah it was as bad as I imagined. The food was bad and overpriced, we never got the popcorn we ordered and they still charged us for it, and the atmosphere that they create is the antithesis of why I go see movies in the theaters. At least my crowd cheered, laughed, and clapped a decent amount through the film, but nowhere near as much as other Thursday night superhero debuts. It reminded me of the one time I saw Rocky Horror and we were explicitly told to NOT call out, which ruined the whole point. Definitely never going again if I could help it.

just insanely slick pacing and editing in that one. fincher/sorkin/reznor and ross all complement each other so well in that movie. its nuts. loved the lead performances from Eisenberg and Garfield as well.

I watched this stupid film Abduction. Not even the Taylor Lautner one, it was a british one where they seemed to invent plenty of contrived reasons for girls to be naked and there was something about a child abduction ring, and some ex military guy whose best bud from the military (they were both British) just so happened to be in LA for some reason. I dunno, I lost the thread of it honestly.

Oh, What a Lovely War! is a lot better. I think it might be almost impenetrable to a non British person since it is very very British, and assumes an amount of base knowledge on part of the viewer. It's partly realistic and dark, showing the war at the front from the men fighting it, its portryal of the officers as upper class idiots cheering the men on while staying as far behind the lines as possible, and partly surreal as political developments, and British high command decisions and plans are shown from a dream like pier in England. And it's almost all set to either songs of the war, or taken from dialogue said by the participants of the time at the time.

So it definitely might turn some people off, as it arguably is a tad disjointed, particularly in the mix of bizarre surrealism and parody, and dark realism of life at the front set to songs.

But it worked for me, I loved it even if the film and I don't think on exactly the same wavelengths. Some shots are beautifully shot and composed, and greatly enhanced by the nature and slightly odd sensiblity of the film, such as the ending shot, the scenes of the high command, the music hall scene with Maggie Smith as a female recruiter. It's extremely well acted as well, and the music works. It feels to say the music works given the context of the film, but it does. Great film.

I can't decide if I like Social Network or Zodiac more. I still probably lean a tiny bit towards Zodiac but SN is damn good. Love that crazy crew scene scored to in the hall of the mountain king.

I haven't seen Zodiac, but Social Network is easily my fav Fincher film. Sooooo good

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Gotta say, this ended up being pretty damn great. I like it more than The Force Awakens. It was a bit of a slow burn at first, but the second half/last third really won me over.

Young Frankenstein: I've seen Universal's Frankenstein countless times, so it's about time I got into this famous homage/parody. It's not just black-and-white, it's presented like a 1930s movie would be, with iris out/in transitions between scenes, and 20th Century Fox's old logo. While the movie is littered with classic jokes, it almost feels like you could take this story and play it straight as a sequel to the Universal movies. Gene Wilder still has that commanding stage presence (he sure likes to shout a lot), but my favorite character here is Igor with his wide-eyed look and big smile. It helps if you've seen Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, but you can watch without.
