"Guess what? Uncle Sam don't give a shit about your expenses. You want bread, fuck a baker. "

pretty fun 80s la cheese with
surprising twist at the end

Trees_Lounge_film.jpg

colorful characters, great neighberhood vibe, buscemi in prime form

chloe sevigny was really cute

Just watched Pusher. Damn that was intense. Terrific film.
Looking forward to the second and third film this week. Think i will also give Bronson another chance. Hated it and turned it off somewhere in the middle. Maybe now that i see the common thread in Refn's films i'll be able to enjoy it more.

Just finished watching Alexander Revisited.

I had already seen the theatrical version before, but didn't like it. This one fared much better, although I wouldn't be able to say exactly why. Still I found out I enjoyed it more and was even moved by the end of it, something that never happened with the theatrical cut.

The screening room I was at holds 40 people and it was a full screening, after 15 minutes 32 people had left once they realised that the film was in the original text.

This is fucking embarrasing. I saw the movie a month or so ago in NYC and I don't think anyone walked out. I enjoyed it, if only for Fiennes' performance.

Went to the Bunuel double (and a half!) feature despite gaf's lack of advice :(

Un Chien Andalou- wut

The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoise- I think there's a point to this somewhere but... wut

Viridiana- FANTASTIC

On a semi-related note, art house audiences are awful. You don't have to audibly chuckle at every clever, symbolic, or well-composed moment in a film to make sure everyone around you is aware that you "get it".

DCotB is the best of the three, imo.

But L'AGE D'OR is my fave.

*edited* im a mean person. i take it all back

Oh, now I'm curious.

The Artist.

Simply one of the best films I've seen in a long time. Mesmerising in so many ways.

Is there no |OT| for this film? I searched but found nothing. If not, I am disappointed in you, GAF.

Haywire

Judging by the Box Office numbers, I guess I just don't understand the masses anymore. I really feel disconnected. Underworld 25 mil???? Haywire 8 or 9 what ever it was?

Anyways, It was a very cool movie. Gina is so much fun to look at for 2 hours. The music was very 70's I just loved everything. For me it trumps Salt and Columbiana.

I know some of you who have seen it didn't like it. Evilore gave it a thumbs down.

I just don't get peoples tastes anymore.

monster (2003)

a trashy, glorified lifetime drama with a confused agenda but little actual insight. it's never quite clear whether the lifeless script and hackneyed writing (along with the oddly inappropriate soundtrack) are a failed attempt at ironic subversion or simply a case of misguided romanticism. at the core is charlize theron's "academy award winning" performance. it is more an embodiment and, while impressive, ultimately still falls flat because the script gives her so little of consequence to do or say and romanticizes motivations that are murky to begin with.

fish tank (2009)

british underclass blues done right. andrea arnold's very personal and exquisitely acted, shot and paced film is totally worth your time. arnold and cinematographer robbie ryan shoot with handheld cameras but avoid the usual indie trappings of endless, ugly and unfocused shakey cam sequences and instead find genuine moments of quiet beauty rarely observed with this type of low-budget handheld approach. lead actress katie jarvis' performance is, much like the rest of the cast's, entirely believable and naturalistic - pretty much flawless. arnold's script is also less predictable and straightforward than initially thought, even if it might initially look like little more than another excursion into traditional loach or leigh territory. fish tank has its own voice and identity. give it a shot! it's also streaming on netflix right now!

CHILDREN OF MEN
Didn't think it was quite as good as some others do but it was all right. I liked the action scenes, the first one in the car, the second one with sneaking into an escape and the final during the riot. The ending was very good, my friend said it was a bit cheesy with
everyone stopping the fight as the baby was revealed, but I thought it felt quite fitting what with a miracle appearing before their eyes. At least for the few moments it lasted, I'm glad they didn't push it too far.

GLADIATOR
I loved this film back in high school. It was worse now, mainly because it seemed to aim too high and too low. Like, I get that it's an action movie, but it moves way too fast to flesh out the political dispute and Maximus' character arc - he goes from what seems like an unmotivated fighter to fighter from a few words, then from the first fight to master gladiator in like one scene. I think it should have aimed at a longer running time to give more room to the politics and characters. Make it a real historical epic rather than something in between that and a blockbuster (IIRC it was a summer blockbuster?).

The fighting scenes were still very good, especially after they got to Rome. They did save the movie.

on Witness for the Prosecution:

I was really impressed with the sound editing in this movie. the scene in the court with the housekeeper who is hard of hearing is just perfect. they introduce the large court, they are making the size of the court visible for the viewer not just with the camera work, but also through the different volume levels of the actors are speaking respectively the distance to the camera. this must have been a shitload of work back in these days.

Also:
Man, what a ending. I couldn't believe what was happening - it was like a pingpong game. I felt really bad for the lawyer at the end..

any good court room dramas to recommend?

btw, today it's Billy Wilders "Ace in the Hole"

any good court room dramas to recommend?

If you can find it, The Truth from Clouzot is excellent (and has Brigitte Bardot as a bonus).

Murder on a sunday if you don't mind non fiction (that is more intense and griping than any work of fiction).

Anatomy of a murder is a must-see.

12 Angry men, of course, if you haven't seen it yet.

Joan of Arc (Dreyer and/or Bresson) and Path of Glory could be on that list too.

Oh, and the entirety of the Wire just for that scene with Omar :)

The Town

The inspiration from Heat was apparent, not that it's a bad thing. From the love of automatics to the characters and story. Enjoyed this one a lot. Affleck definitively has directing talent. Looking forward to more work from him.

All About My Mother - This was a pretty good film, although I can't really muster much to say about it other then that. *** 1/2

The Red Shoes - Really beautiful film that falls one point short because of the rather weak ending (although it was fitting thematically) the 15-minute ballet sequence is probably one of the best scenes I've seen in a film. **** 1/2

Late Spring - Loved this so much, they are so many classic "ozu" moments sprinkled throughout the entirely of the duration, with that last "conversation" between the father and daughter being a real highlight in particular, not so sure if this tops "Tokyo story" for me, but it comes pretty damn close. *****

Traffic

Long, but was not bored for a moment. Very, very well-made and put together movie. The editing was really good. I loved how the tone/color changed when they switched stories. He shot the film himself, so major props to him. Love his work as always.

The cast is great too. my favorite being Benicio Del Toro. He was just perfect for that role.

10/10 for me.

So i just finished the Pusher trilogy and i'm really blown away. Watching these three films was one of the best movie experiences that i had in a while. It will take a few days to digest.

Unlike Refn's newer films they don't aim for style or beautiful cinematography. It's just pure gritty realism with some very dark themes. I can't even remember the last time that i've seen such well developed multi layered characters. You see them do heinous things but at the same time glimpses of their good side are visible. Together with them being victims of even bigger crooks such a dense moral ambiguity accrues. I found myself fighting with myself innerly about the question if it's right to root for them. So much going on in my head i can barely find words for it.

Watched Apocalypto last night. I've watched that movie about 4 times over the years and I still love the hell out of it. The ending was just so good. Really wish Mel Gibson would hurry the hell up and make that Viking movie already.

Pusher 2 > 1 > 3

I can't really take the main character in 3 seriously after this, haha

For me it's 1+2>3 but the third isn't a stinker like Godfather 3. It starts a bit weak because you think "ah i know this guy he's an asshole, how am i supposed to connect with him?" but halfway through the film manages to make your head spin around and
the slaughter scene
is one of the best moments in the whole trilogy.

But Hollywood sucked back then. I think you mean like 80 years ago or even 70.

well like chaplin and d.w. griffin movies are like 90 years old. the melies and fantomas shorts are over a 100 and are better than anything that came out this year. so...

also the artist doesn't feel like any silent move ever made, much less a good one.

I hesitate to watch The Artist yet. The concept seems interesting but it doesn't look like a film that would be high up on my to watch list if it was a genuine 20's silent film.

Just saw fast five finally last night. Probably my favorite action movie ever.

Also recently saw Warrior, trailer gave away everything which made me not see it in theaters but it's actually pretty damn good.

He said Hollywood Swoon. The Hollywood presented in The Artist is in the 20's and 30's.

I found The Artist to be charming but like I said not anywhere close this years best.

Heat
Really good, I watched The Town before Heat and I've noticed a lot of similarities. In the end, it's like what most people say, Heat is on another level. Really like Al Pacino's and Deniro's characters. Deniro was really good in this flick, as always, great actor.

fine like intolerance is like 95 years old. close enough.

swoon you suggested Disorderlies (1987) once right? whatever even if you didn't I'm turning it on

oh yes. sefskillz both highly recommend that film

It's the best of the Fat Boys filmography.

only if you don't count the are you ready for freddy music video.

Had an interesting movie watching today.

Started off with Maxed Out which is about credit card debt. It was kinda interesting but in over all just average. Then moved onto Fritz the Cat, The amount of cartoon animal boob and dong is hilarious, aside from that the lol nature and some what funny nature of the movie. I was left rather, ok wtf is really going on besides a series of random events or at least that's what it seemed to be to me. And lastly i went to Bottle Shock, it really didn't do much of anything, it was bleh and it was average at best. So yeah pretty wide range of movie today lol

Haha Disorderlies was pretty great. Felt like some of the last 25 or so minutes were treading water a bit, but the 60 before that were gold. especially the scene where alfred and the boys go to roller disco. priceless.

Incendies: 6/10. Great looking film and really well put together, I was completely caught up in everything while it was unfolding. Then the next day I was like... wait what? No.

Raise The Red Lantern: 9/10. Who would think a movie about a bunch of cackling hens could be so great! This was a swoonpick™ that I saw him mention one time and I stealthily added it to my queue without him knowing.

Cyclo - Vietnamese movie about a kid who gets sucked into the mafia/gangs, yada yada. Wasn't anything special storywise, but the movie looked great and had some interesting scenes. Probably the best Vietnamese movie I have ever seen. (lol) 7/10

Watched Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo which I, surprisingly enough, liked a lot. It was so much better than the Swedish version and it's great to see how I am loving Fincher's work more and more his last couple of films (sans Benjamin Button). Rooney Mara was great, although not as intense as Noomi Rapace, and Daniel Craig was alright because he basically didn't do anything, but, he did it well. Fun for the whole family! 8/10

Tokyo Drifter - Alright, this was weird. Not sure what I watched. Visually very satisfying. 7/10

Silent Running - Didn't care for this at all. Story wasn't any good and became boring even after Lowell ends up alone with those (sad, sad excuses of) Drones, the acting sucked and the visual design of the movie didn't make any sense. Did these guys even see 2001:aSO? No idea why this is considered a cultclassic, unless it was named so by hippies. 4/10

Expendables - Apart from the digital blood and bad story, the action was decent. I may watch the 2nd.. 5/10

Also an independent theater here in Boston loves showing old and cult classics on the original reels. Last week they showed Mean Girls which was a treat.

I feel like there was a great concept here but was executed poorly due to a weak narrative. Worth watching, on Netflix Instant.

I agree, it's enjoyable but it could have been a whole lot more cutting. The idea is fantastic though, and I think if it hadn't been executed so poorly there wouldn't have been an executive willing to back it.

On ace in the hole by billy wilder

Don't watch that ace in the hole movie while having a bad mood. It is a really good movie but
the ending in particular was really upsetting in a weird way. Not emotionally gripping but somehow disturbing and revealing.

Ps: that woman was such a fucking whore. Douglas at least ultimately showed some heart, but she was one ice cold bitch of a character.
