Man that was incredible. That was the crescendo. So glad they built this up. Elliot's realization needed to bake and it was worth it so much.

This episode had it all, but the response to this, particularly that one reviewer (not the guy from The Onion) makes it clear that the format for storytelling that this show is going to (probably has to) adopt is going to lose some members of the audience who came in last season.

The reality is that this type of storytelling, which i've mentioned in the past, isn't really something we see on TV for a long period of time, and we can tell this show is going to have to handle multiple seasons of this type of format. Yes, the audience's primary focal perspective is an unreliable narrator who can lose time in the plot to an alter-ego that doesn't really exist, that he talks to regularly, and that is not going to be going away ever.

I felt like this realization wasn't just for Elliot, but rather for us. I think it was fair to speculate just how Elliot was going to resolve having an alter ego that he sometimes loses control to after last season. Looking back at it, the episodes prior to this one were basically Elliot exploring how he himself would do this (either through suppression or through medication), but in the end neither worked. Seeing Elliot realize that Mr. Robot doesn't necessarily need to be a debilitating force, but rather an empowering one, and one he needs to accept since it is a part of him, was also something the show was trying to get across to us; Mr. Robot, the persona, is not going anywhere.

For fans who are just looking for forward momentum from their plots, these past 4 episodes/3 weeks must've been frustrating coming in from season 1, seeing as how it took nearly 4 hours of screen time for Elliot to ultimately reach the conclusion that he did. However, I do think that a lot of setup & groundwork for the season was laid there as well, and even as we got to the end of the episode, we saw the pace & tension begin to really ratchet up. Now that Elliot is back in the fold, this season is about to get underway.

They did way more with that fake movie than I thought.

Awesome. They actually upgraded the WhoIsMrRobot site. It has a GUI now where as it was just a terminal with 4 functions before.

Edit:

Two new URL's given in today's show.

First, the IP address Elliott will use for Ray's site migration. Might see more of this soon.

And second, the IP address that Elliott uses to connect to the IRC chat room. This one takes a bit of involvement so I won't spoil what to do. But it does help understand the ending of tonight's show. So I guess it could be considered spoilers.

That was a pretty good episode. It wasn't insanely boring like last week.

The "put the character on the left or right side of the screen while zoomed in" technique is getting a little annoying.

So, what are you suppose to ask in the irc chan?

Then this show isn't for you, because Sam is going to be using this constantly. It's like the complaint American Horror Story had for the way it framed itself: It's how the director of photography wants it.

Sepinwall's review is straight garbage. The hour & change flew by even though I started watching on DVR at 10:30pm and was really tired.

I can understand the complaints some people have had about the first two weeks, but last night was fantastic.

The people on the train wearing gas masks reminded me of P4.

The thing Blackberry has/had over other phones was its security so yeah the FBI switching made it clear where that was going to go.

Half expected the 'main' theme of the show to kick in when Elliot sat down at the computer. There were hints of the theme tonight, but I don't think we've had it in full this season yet, have we?

If I'm not just drawing a blank, I'm guessing they're saving it for a more key scene.

I'm assuming Ray wants to start up a site to sell drugs on the dark web?

I feel like it might be a lot darker than that, otherwise I doubt Elliot would care about getting involved (assuming that's where this plot line goes).

Am I crazy or did Darlene say "cunt-y" at the start of this episode? Why even bother censoring the fucks at this point.

I heard it too. Actually used to think that word was a bigger no-no than the f-bomb. And there was probably about 20 fucks censored in this episode.

Still don't get why they were not censored in the first two episodes. This is messed up enough that I don't see why they need to bother (especially with the first two eps and OJ breaking the barrier).

The audio drops are annoying.

Apparently, it was a concession made during the first week because of limited commercial interruptions.

The few commercials we did see were Cash4Gold and that ilk, while the censored episodes now have your typical sponsors like Wendy's and stuff.

USA technically has nothing to lose airing uncensored "fucks"...except all that advertiser $$$

The People vs OJ Simpson had normal advertisers if I recall. But they used "fuck" more sporadically. Animal Kingdom has also really been pushing the sex scene barrier with pretty clear "side boob" shots. The violence in Hannibal was wayyyy beyond usual network standards as well and that was on NBC.

I don't really get it. It's an adult show. Advertisers really should get that. Sex and violence are okay, but some curse words are not?

am I reading too much into
Romero not being at the table scene? Did a part of Elliot know he was dead?

I thought the same thing. He seemed genuinlly surprised when he was in the IRC chat, though. So maybe they removed him from that scene to make room at the table. The other girl in the fsociety wasn't there either.

Trenton? She was sitting between Mobley and Ray.

To be fair, The People v. OJ Simpson was a ratings monster, and "docudramas"/series of historical interest can get away with more (see the immensely brutal Roots remake).

Re: Hannibal, I only started watching it live in the third season, but did you see the ads it was saddled with? I hadn't seen a more pathetic roster of sponsors since Skins on MTV post-child porn controversy, and that's even taking into account the episodes before it was quietly shuffled to Saturday nights

I'm finding this season much harder to follow than the first. I'm not really sure what most characters are up to.

It's clearly intricately designed but I have to admit it's losing me.

I mean, the characters haven't really been up to anything yet. This week's episode is the first where a clear 'direction' was beginning to be laid out & set: fsociety is being hunted, Romero was onto an FBI surveillance program that might've been tracking them, and for the first time we now know that Darlene's mission to tank the public perception of ECorp was actually a part of Mr. Robot's plan, and that Mr. Robot had anticipated that the real work that would need to be done against ECorp would take place after the hack, not leading up to it, and that he had already put plans in place in order to enact that unbeknownst to Elliot.

All of this basically came out in yesterday's episode. Everything up to this point was just setting the stage for the rest of the season.

"Next week will be shorter"

*checks next week's DVR* 10:00-11:18

I mean, I guess technically he's right...

Have to say I am actually happy when networks allow shows to be extended past the normal hour. Helps keep the creators vision in tact without having to make cuts. FX and AMC are good about it too.

Yeah, it seems that some people are getting annoyed that this show isn't the same length every week and that seems odd to me.

Let the creators of the entertainment choose the length of the show, they tend to be better at storytelling than executives.

I don't think it's because it isn't the same length every week. I think it's because it has often feels longer than it needs to be this season.

But sometimes you end up with Sons of Anarchy or the fourth season of Arrested Development where giving the creator freedom to do whatever they want works against them. Sometimes these limits help. I don't personally think it is a problem with Mr. Robot so far, but I also don't think it is always for the better in general in TV.

Can someone explain the phone conversation between BD Wong and the ECorp guy?
How do those two even know each other, and why?

Loved the music in last night's ep, so many great tracks. There was one track that played when Mr Robot was challenging Elliot to the chess match, it sounded like something Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross could have written, it was so good.

It was in the stinger from the finale of last season. Two high powers in the world colluding with each other, but one (Whiterose) is a double agent in fucking with Evil Corp with fsociety.

I guess every episode is going to be a 90 minute slog this season. I mean shit these eps (without commercials) are longer than the average of every premium cable show I've ever watched. I commend USA for giving Esmail free reign and going balls deep into whatever that guy is selling in hopes of having a "prestige" show, but man sometimes a few limitations go a long away. For me, all the episodes this season have been of the same quality. I am simply not entertained by or interested in what has been transpiring, at all. This show has lost me. Enjoy true-believers.

The "put the character on the left or right side of the screen while zoomed in" technique is getting a little annoying.

They're really sticking to that gimmick, it super stands out. Every time. Visually the show has simply become repetitive.

Commercials every 10 minutes is really grating.

Whiterose & Philip are colleagues of industry - Whiterose seems to be a major corporate player in China, Philip & him are currently working together on a chip factory that was briefly mentioned at the end of last season, and it seems Ecorp wants to integrate some new form of 'ECoin' commerce.

The company Whiterose publicly works for & ECorp seem to have some joint ventures together, although Philip probably has zero idea on Whiterose's involvement with the hack, or any other proclivities Whiterose has (at the season finale, Whiterose was dressed as a man when they met - it seems whenever Whiterose is working towards his own interests, he is dressed as a woman, whereas he is dressed as a man when Philip/other people saw him).
