MS buys the Xbone.com domain name

I don't get why peoples panties are twisted, be it Nelson or posters on GAF. Being salty about it will just make them say it more.

Disrespectful is having PR goons come to feed us utter garbage about system specs and then have a huff when people call them on it.

That's probably the biggest issue I have with them now.
Gamers aren't as naive as 10 years ago.
MS appears to be letting Marketing people take over. I say cut that Marketing budget next round and focus more on building the best technology. Superior tech speaks for itself, as evidenced by Sony's latest creation.

This is like that episode of the Simpsons where homer names his son "Bart" because he can't think of any similar words that a bully could use to tease his future son.

XB was always a nickname for the OG xbox and the brand as a whole...what were they thinking?

And disrespectful? Get out of here with that shit.

I think trying to shaft gamers out of their ability to directly sell and trade games to one another (while still leaving it possible to trade into their strategic retail partners like GameStop) was disrespectful.
I think charging $50/year for the priveledge of being able to use my existing Netflix subscription is also disrespectful.
I think telling people, who live in areas where they would have trouble with the daily online checkin (the only real life analog to this that I can think of is a parole officer), "Why would I want to live there?" is a smidge more disrespectful.

You announce a product that has seemingly no benefit to the consumer and removes a lot of their control...and you are shocked when people react poorly?

XBone was a fitting name for the console, as it was announced. Maybe if you stopped letting the suits meddle in every little detail and just let the engineers design the kick ass machine they always wanted to make...maybe the initial reaction would have been different.

Disrespectful? Hold on. Hold the hell on. Is Nelson saying that WE are being disrespectful to Microsoft?

Seriously, does this guy have any respect left in himself whatsoever? First you treat us like dirt and then you call us disrespectful. He's literally just trolling now.

Fuck you, MS. Xbone 4 lyfe. What do I give a shit about respect when they wanted to crap on all consumers and gamers before people threw a fit? Fuck them

Seeing somebody type "Xbone" has become the same for me as seeing "M$". It instantly tells me everything I need to know about that poster.

While M$ just comes off as silly I feel Xbone is clever enough to be ambiguous. MS just gave us a fine nickname for its system and it rolls off the tongue damn well, lol. Though tbh I just prefer to use XBO.

I use to have a friend that refused to use anything but Gaystation in high school. Wanted to slap him every time he said it.

I don't think it's "disrespectful", but it is annoying. X1 is quick and easy...and anyone smarter than a rock knows it's not a reference to anything else in this GAMING forum.

Heck you could say I'm hooking my X1 up to my X1. That sentence still makes sense even if one is a reference to Comcast. I'm done with these threads though....people can type/call it whatever they want.

nice, always preferred Xbone to saying xb1 or xbox 1, flows off the tongue better.

Hopefully this puts an end to the persecution complex about the nickname being derogatory, when it really isn't.

I've always liked Xbone. It's silly and irreverent, which is cool. It's not like M$, which sounds like some overly earnest 15-year-old anti-capitalist crap. And no-one would say "Em-dollar".
It's more like CODBLOPS, which gets around the awkwardness of pronouncing the full title while also rejoicing in the silly sound.

XB1 is confusing, since there is already an XBox 1 and MS doesn't use a numerical 1 in any of its branding.
MS specifically used "One" instead of "1" because "one" implies "one box to rule the living room" whereas the numerical 1 does not.

XBO is kinda okay, but has 2 problems:
no one uses O as an abbreviation for One
it still causes confusion with the Original Xbox, which has a better claim for using O in its acronym
It sounds like XBox or it's users have a problem with body odour

Seriously, XBO implies "XBox stinks", and does it way more directly than Xbone implies "yeah, because bone sounds a bit like mean boner, which is slang for a penile erection, and is also archaic slang for a silly mistake".

Mircosoft would probably want us to use the abbreviation XBone, pronounced "ECKS-BEE-WON", which would be cool except:
ECKS-BONE uses fewer syllables, which is kinda the whole point of abbreviations
It's good to have a name that avoids confusion with the original xbox

To be honest, the PS4 sounds pretty souless, dull and corporate in comparison to the dynamic, masculine and forceful attitude implied by the Xbone.
I think people are overstating Nelson's offence to Xbone though. I assume he thinks it's a bit juvenille but it's about to throw some Hitler Downfall shit-fit, "Steiner... Steiner reports that people are calling it the Xbone on Neogaf...", "Enough! if you've ever used the word Xbone, leave the Redmond bunker now!"

You know what? I'm beginning to hate how MS has named the new system. It's just super awkward to address. Don't know whether to use X1, XB1, XBO, XBone etc. And they all seem to have shortcomings. Everyone has their own idea but nothing everyone agrees with. Why don't we just use the full name? Xbox One :/

What I love is that brilliant marketing minds spent months and millions to fashion this new iteration of the brand... Aaaaaand the gamer community chewed it three times and spat out 'Xbone' on the same day it was revealed.

Delicious Fail! It's like an expecting couple who spent nine months pouring over baby books before finally selecting the name Bater for their newborn son.

I hope the guy who owned it got paid a nice amount. Jumping on the xbone domain was a great idea. Ms buying the domain just legitimized the nickname. That like putting the Streiand effect into motion.

It's the exact opposite of 'cool'. It's meant to be insulting, and just like the use of 'M$', it's just lame.

Actually, M$ made sense back in the day when when MS was being prosecuted for illegal monopolistic activities and was by far the most valuable tech company on the planet. Its kinda outdated now though.

To clarify, I said to stop talking about the name Xbone in a thread about Xbone's ESRAM.

Frankly I do not give a shit what people call it and I certainly don't think "Xbone" is "disrespectful."

Shouldn't have given it a stupid name then.

This.

I'm completely convinced that the only reason they called it the Xbox One was because they wanted people to refer to it in casual conversation as "the One". So I'm glad that people have latched onto Xbone so that the silly console gets a silly nickname to match its silly full name.

I know people starting calling it that as a way to insult the system but I like Xbone. What are we supposed to nickname it? X1? The One? Nah.

Seriously, "The One" is the most weird nickname out there, it's like talking about the second coming of Kutaragi. I think I'll stick with XBO and Xbone. "I am getting Halo on the bone" just sounds fine and more fluid than "I am getting Halo on the Eks-Bee-One".

Regardless of whether anyone actually thinks its disrespectful(It isn't), we can all agree that having your PR mouthpiece call it disrespectful is stupid as fuck.

You embrace it and have fun with it, or ignore it. Those are the only 2 viable options.

I didn't know people were offended by what I and many others call the Xbox One. It's an inanimate object, it has no feelings, why do you care about whether I call it Xbone or not? If anything, the fact it bothers you so much it'll make me continue to want to use the nickname.

I wish I had time this morning to read the entire thread. This is hilarious and MS needs thicker skin. They created this situation.

"The One" is "Input One" because watching TV should be simple, but it's not because of the need to change inputs to watch live TV.

Wow some of these comments. Do you really think MS was trying to ruin your hobby?

If you directly compare their old and I stress old policies to Steam do you not see the improvements they were trying to make compared to that service?

Yes there were 24 hour check-ins but that was only required so that you could have more rights with your digital content (gifting, game share, reselling digital games, disc free playback, etc...)

I just don't get the vitrol I'm seeing lately. They reversed everything months ago.

I'm not going to say it is disrespectful, but I'm not the biggest fan of "Xbone" myself.
It isn't as obnoxious as M$, though.
It annoys me greatly when people in the real world actually say "Xbone."

I've always liked Xbone. It's silly and irreverent, which is cool.

Totally agree. I am still going back and forth on which console to get day 1 and which to save until next year, so when I say "Xbone", I'm doing it because:

1. It was all over the internet almost immediately after the name announcement. I got used to it.
2. Like you say, it's silly and irreverent. Game consoles are decidedly NOT serious business. They're toys FFS. I love mine and it's my primary hobby, but they're toys.
3. It does roll off the tongue. "Xbox One" just sounds stupid to my ears. As somebody who hasn't said "Xbox" in forever and instead refers to the 360 as "the 360", "X-Bone" is a more natural transition.

So, I'm sorry Microsoft employees don't like it. However, their marketing department should have rubbed two brain cells together or maybe done $10 worth of research at the local Gamestop over a lunch hour. And I say that with all due respect. ;)

"I am getting Halo on the bone" just sounds fine

God, I can already see myself saying to my wife, "Hey baby, I'm going to go down to the basement and play with my Bone for a while".

And that's the trap. I can easily see people transitioning to just calling it "the bone" after awhile.

Microsoft should probably fire whoever approved that name. If it's the same agency responsible for those god awful Surface ads that go head to head with iPad, tie them together and dump them into the Puget Sound.
