MS Flight Simulator 2024 |OT| The Sky is Calling

They have changed the architecture so significantly that aircraft, cities, basically all the content is streamed. And they don't have either the servers, or a backend capable of dealing with any of it.
If only Asobo knew of a company that has some IT infrastructure that specialises in flexing compute, storage, content delivery and bandwidth on demand.

Rally race is kinda cool. I'll try it some more tomorrow. I don't remember any such mode in the 2020 version. Instead of boring flights from one airport to another, I find playing arcade modes like this more enjoyable.

There were posts warning this was going to happen a week or two before its release that the game needed more time. Id by lying if I said I was going to get a refund on steam. I guess we are going to deal with it till its fixed completely. Its not just the bandwidth issue. It looks phenomenal though once you get it going. Crashed to desktop just now and its activating packages. Hopefully that's a good thing.

Seriously is this still fucked? I'm on the customise identity screen again. Do I just leave it or what
It seems to be mainly a Europe issue now. On US side it seems to be better currently. What I have seen today in my game, is that if the game decides to not load data, you are stuck in whatever you just do. If you are lucky and gets data streamed....it works for whatever you do. So yeah, there are still things broken....and for me it looks like a streaming issue or something. 🤷‍♂️

Also pls check if you have enough free space on your windows partition (usually C: )...minimum 20-30gb. If not, you really might want to symlink the install folder to another partition. I had to do it.

There was also an announcement about an update today:

Update on login queue
The waiting queue to login to MSFS 2024 has been resolved. We are aware of additional technical issues that the team is working to address. We will have another update later today.

I just managed to get back into the game and I was all excited... and then I found myself playing the Minecraft DLC (it was all made out of cubes and squares) 😂😂

I'll be back tomorrow or the day after hoping things get better. In the meantime, I'll be entertained with Stalker 2 and several others.

I got in and take a flight over LA.
Holy shit runs that thing bad. Ground textures, building and so on and on. Just my plane look right. But not inside!

This thing has a long way to be good. I think I delete it and wait a couple of months.

Glad I didn't buy it.

Problems outside of broadband/server issues encountered so far:
- The game is unstable, it crashes randomly at random places w/o any triggers
- Game undeutilizes GPU
- Flight plan is borken
- Cockpits are not loading, most of them are very basic interaction-wise
- Controls are broken, I've spent and hour in a failed attempt to remap one axis
- liveries are missing, plane models are missng
- ground visuals are substantial downgrade from MSFS2020, but it may be streaming issue or a bug
- weather is broken and not always applying to the scenario correctly
- some scripts in story mode are broken
- no option to download at least plane models whatsoever
- since game stores generic assets locally, many AI-created cities look better than handcrafted areas like London simply because those areas just won't load
- bing map data is painfully outdated in like 80% of the world, some regions are shot during winter or autumn and entire patches of Russia, Kazakstan, China or South America look completely off

Shame I've missed HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 warnings. This is not even public beta, it's an alpha build.

How did Flight Sim 2020 release in quite a stable state, yet this one didn’t? It seems like 2024 isn’t even close to being finished from the impressions I’m seeing.

It is a broken mess, but the career mode is so fun, i cant stop playing it. Took a while to get everything working on my yoke and other equipment, everything was in invertet mode to. That was fun....But yeah, they have alot of of work to do here, but there is pure gold under all this dirt.

The only problem is that they had the opportunity to hook a new audience at the start, to open the game to more players. But the game has already suffered so much reputational damage that I'm afraid only enthusiasts of the series will be left to dig up this gold...

I bought it because I really enjoy this franchise but I haven't even attempted to play it yet, waiting to hear its solid before diving in

Seems like they removed the AI Pilot feature completely leaving only the real life aircraft autopilot now. This is super disappointing and makes this a no buy for me. I often liked to set my controller down, smoke a bowl and look at scenery. That was actually my favorite part of MSFS2020.
It's not removed there are options for it, they just don't seem to work...

I refunded this turd. I just couldn't do it anymore. I was able to log in today but the game needs a lot of extra time in the oven. It has a lot of other bugs and issues outside of log in issues. From texture streaming issues to object loading issues, and even my flight sticks not working due to cloud issues. I was playing in VR and parts of my plane kept popping in and out of existence and I'm playing on a 4090 with gigabit fiber. I just had to eject from this clusterfuck of a game. I'll be back later if they fix it but I think I'll stick to the much better MSFS 2020 for now.

In hindsight, it clearly would have been better to delay putting it on GP for a few months.

Anyway, I'll let it marinate for a few weeks, I have other games, not in a hurry. Didn't even unpack my gear yet.

Help!

In career mode Im only being offered "firstflight" missions of the mission map. I dont have "ferryflight" or "flightseeing" missions even thou they are unlocked and I meet and exceed all the qualifications? Mission map is tonnes of firstflights only?

MS stress tested for "only" 200K concurrent users and didnt expect this to number to be dwarfed.

A victim of its own success I guess, lol

Even as a flight sim enthusiast I have to admit I never expected a flight simulator to be this popular.

I keep wondering if it is only convenient excuses or it is really down to this game being so popular vs expectations.

Nevermind I am a dumbass. Found those missions! they are few and far between and no where near my starting base. All good.

Steam numbers for 24 were way less than 20, I bet GP numbers too. Game launched seemingly without any reviews or marketing. 24 is just more reliant on cloud streaming. And local bugs like piss poor stability or broken basic things like autopilot or flight plan has nothing to do with popularity.

It just seems to be that the number of people wanting to play the game far exceeds the current server capacity. I was able to play yesterday in the UK from around 7am - 3pm. Then things started to go down hill to where it wouldn't load past the 97% again. People who do make it in are suffering with blurry / blocky scenery.

It's funny because people who have got fed up and gone back to FS2020 are suffering with the same problems. Both are running off of the same servers and both cannot cope with the demand. The only reason why connecting to the US via VPN works is because it's likely fewer people are using it over there when we do rather than any specific fix.

You'd think that Microsoft with all their "cloud" experience could cope with demand and auto scale, but it appears not as both evenings have crumpled under the weight. I am really looking forward to eventually playing the game, but I think it's going to be a couple of days to a week before that happens. Likely fixes include 1) They actually scale up their servers 2) The initial excitement fades 3) Some give up and refund or delay for a time.

These are purely my assumptions and nothing more than speculation. It seems to me that they limit the number of players not because the server can't handle them (Microsoft Azure can't sag from so many people, I just don't believe it), but because the game doesn't hold any local files, and everything is streamed directly to the client (And this is actually very noticeable when you do a small mission on a local map, or launch the free flight mode in which the game just dies right away). It seems to me that their servers simply can't stream so much content to so many people without interruption. As was correctly noted above in the video, system requirements here fade into the background, but in this game its performance will depend on the quality of your connection and what mood the Azure servers are in today.

But cloud gaming is not something completely new, right? Geforce Now is doing basically the same and I never heard of such problems as we experience here with this game. Player count cannot be the problem. There is barely anyone playing.

There is a big difference when you play through cloud services - "When playing games on GeForce NOW, your local device is receiving and decoding a compressed video." You actually receive a compressed video clip, roughly speaking, you play YouTube. Here the game tries to load everything - from trees, planes, objects on the ground, cities, buildings, topography, etc. - all this directly from the server to thousands of players, simultaneously.

I'm going to say I'd be fine with that. There's a future path where this is successful, with tens of millions, flying on controller. They'll see the numbers, and pretty soon the FMs and system management are an afterthought. Maybe, if this stays a niche sim, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Just a heads up...for me it works now (germany). And on steam are a few UK users for whom it also seems to work now. Seems they fixed the issues over here. Long loading times are gone. Could just finish the first tutorials and proudly obtained my "private pilot license". Its fantastic...when it works! 👍

Finally got in. Did my classic MS flight sim play:
  • Take off at my local airport
  • Find my house
  • Nose dive into house
  • chuckle
Yep, it's definitely flight sim. I know there are teething issues with pop-in/streaming, but so far I think MSFS2020 looked better?

Got lucky first 2 days. Game ran almost perfect other than a 90min Que on day 1. Today was bad though , couldnt play career mode, literally had a lock on the menu. Then it unlocked but long, long loadtimes to start a mission. Then buggy. Very good game here when it works.

Turned my pc on this morning at 7am and it loaded within less than a minute. Had three 3-4 flights which worked perfectly. I can definitely see the graphical improvements they've made. Taking off from London City with the dawn light and the city lights twinkling below was stunning. It's also definitely made clear to me that FPS at least on my machine has improved considerably. It was a massive lag test flying over London in 2020, but now it's a lot smoother.

It's just a shame that I can only play it when no-one else is at the moment. Their claim they've improved server capacity has done nothing for me at peak time.

Flight Simulator 2020 was only PC its first year, and released in a different climate in consumer base of Game Pass (especially the Game Pass for PC subscribers,) so that is one big difference, before we even get to the technical distinctions. The number of gamers saying, "New thing here, might as well...", it's so many more now.

Honestly. MSs quality control has gone down the absolute toilet. What the fuck are they playing at?

I havent tried playing this yet due to the negative feedback but Every big game they are launching is plagues with stupid issues. They should be embarassed and deserve being publicly dragged over the coals for this stuff.

I am so salty over Forza Motorsport and this just proves theyve learnt nothing.

Gob shites.
