MS Flight Simulator 2024 |OT| The Sky is Calling

Outstanding. Here at the back of my house is a field where I walk my dogs - photo taken last year. A random bit of ground in some unknown part of Scotland.

And beside it is a picture taken in FS2024 this morning when in free look mode as I flew over my house.

I can’t fail but to be impressed!

Dammit, that looks really nice. Considering it got the whole world in it.

Yeah, it goes over the top with the trees, but the contours of the land are (I guess as you’d expect) pretty top notch. That wee hill at the bottom to the left is as knackering to look at as it is to climb 😂

This has really surprised me with how good the career is. I've almost finished the IFR training and it's like going through aircraft university. I've learned so much and this is a brilliant way to get people interested in aviation and potentially wanting to be a real pilot. They've said this was their intention and they really have done a great job at all it.
Yeah, its brilliant. I wish there would be even more tutorials, for example handling of the autopilots which I find pretty important and dont understood why they never make tutorials for it. If someone is looking for autopilot tutorials (and other more indepth stuff), check out good old squirrel on youtube:

Its for 2020, but the autopilot systems are the same in 2024.

Also little tip: in the settings you can map two buttons 1. increase sim rate 2. decrease sim rate. Map them and use them on longer flights (if you like). They are usually not recommened because they can cause physic bugs resulting in crashing your plane. But usually one or max two notches up should be fine.

I did my commercial and heli license...and founded my first company (just missing my first own plane yet). Curious now how this company thing will work. :D

Went back in after launch day and things seem generally fine now.

However, marketplace is not up, so neither are my pile of 2020 add-ons (some work, but have issues, so add-on devs needs time to update).

So it may take a while for things to settle and click into place in that respect - Which is fair and expected.

I've played this thing for 16 hours so far which I'm sure pales in comparison to some peoples tally.

This is easily my GOTY which might sound a bit crazy. It's rare though for me where I get to play a game and actually feel like I'm learning something and really enjoying it at the same time.

I just want to plough through all my certifications, but money is the limiting factor. I did think having to do the grind with endless sightseeing missions would be a downer, but every time I go to do a mission there is something unique to do like skydiving, deliveries or medical. It keeps things fun and entertaining.

So far they've really outdone themselves. It's just a shame that so many were maybe left with a negative impression given the first couple of days.

When you get your first company...the payouts are way better and certification costs becomes your smallest problem. Somehow the map shows still the measle employment payouts (needs to be fixed)....but for a simple 30min sightseeing tour you get than 25-30k. This sounds alot from what you get early on, but when you see what new/used airplanes cost (upto 99mil for an airliner or 250k just for a used Cessna 172) than this is pretty much necessary, if you dont want to make it too grindy. Also your own planes needs maintenance here and there, which isnt cheap as well (so careful flying has its meaning..which is nice).

I am very happy till now with the career mode. Its not yet on the level of the Neofly addon for 2020...but maybe we can get there over time.

I just loaded into the same cities in MFS2020 and MFS 2024 ... why does MFS 2024 look worse? Less draw distance as well, lower textures??

Turning off my VPN made the streaming faster. I may reinstall the game and choose “install the entire thing” option as an experiment. The game is mostly fine, but it seems more stuttery than the 2020 version. Possibly due to the streaming.

You can set the draw distance in the settings. Standard is 200 and goes upto 400 (but be aware...this costs performance...a lot). Lower textures just mean wait for the game to load all the shit in. If you flying long enough in an area you should have all the textures at some point.

I'm not all that convinced by career mode so far. Early days, but all I've had so far is sightseeing missions, which are deadly boring - follow the blue markers, even when they tell you to hold short halfway along the runway.

Also it keeps giving me weird penalties, e.g. for not using my landing lights during a night take-off/landing, except I haven't got night certification yet, it's daylight. In the last one I kept racking up airspeed penalties, but it never explained why.

Think I might throw in a barrel roll on the next flight, see how the robo-passenger like that.

Played some more career mode. It's a nice idea but feels really artificial, from the terrible synthesised speech of the passengers to the penalties awarded when you've actually done something correctly.

- I did a skydiving mission and a message popped up saying I'd need to announce when we were two minutes from the jump point, so I calculated that the jump point was 6-7 minutes away.
- 30 seconds later I got a penalty for not making the announcement. I was correct, we were still six minutes away, but the game just wanted me to press the button as soon as it appeared. This is the case with every ATC announcement- you have to do it when the game says, not at the actual appropriate time.
- Then I put the game on pause so I could put my daughter to bed. Came back and finished the flight, and got 0% because I'd taken too long.

Also, having to move around the world to do different types of mission makes no sense when the 'story' is about picking a home airport and building a business there. I've definitely played better flight sim career modes.

I wasn't expecting to be able to do this (actually walking around in VR in a scenery with highly detailed ground levels like this) in a flight sim for years in the future. It's pretty cool we're already there.

...Might have to purchase this on Steam now me thinks

I’ve already got it installed and took it for a few test flights. I’m really pumped about where this sim is heading.

But to be honest, I’m trying to chill for a bit until they roll out the first few patches. I want a smoother and more polished experience.

Plus, none of my add-ons have been updated by their developers, and the in-game marketplace isn’t live yet.

The game is still fundamentally brooken, dont buy this at this time, wait and see if Asobo is even able to fix everything wrong with it.

Aye, I've got a few from PDMG but it might be a while till we see them transfered over.

Not sure whether to just jump In on the Aviator edition, and be done with it. I hate getting these things and then only having a quarter of the product..

It's a bit pricey but it's my son who'll get the most out of it. Flight Sim is the only game he plays.

Broken how? That hasn't been my experience with it all all.

I've got PMDG's DC-6 for 2020, and I noticed on their forum that they're expecting to port everything except that one across to 2024. There will be an upgrade charge.

The add-on I use most is Little Navmap, and that actually works fine without any updates. It connects to 2024 without any prompting.

Wtf, why would they do that? :messenger_face_steam:
I think because the 2020 version is based on an older build for Prepar3D, and bringing it up to 2024 standard would be too much work.

Actually my info is a bit outdated - a lot of people were pleading for the DC-6 on that forum, and there's a more recent post that says they'll update it to a certain extent, so at least it will work:
- PMDG DC-6: This product will get a compatibility build that encompasses few changes, at least initially- but will allow us to continue enhancing the product as we see fit into the future, and will give MSFS2024 users an option to have a true MSFS2024 build of this thoroughbred airplane. We are not currently planning major cabin/model enhancements due to the need to keep development resources on other, larger projects. If an upgrade charge is deemed necessary for MSFS2020 users to obtain this MSFS2024 build, it will be very small.

At least that's something then. Hopefully in time they'll give it a proper update.

Yeah, I have no idea what you're seeing but it seems to be working perfectly for me now.

I know a few on the official boards have experienced mission bugs like stopping points being placed in buildings, or waypoints 3000 miles away when you're in a Cessna, but these seems to be few and far between.

For me aside from my initial issues with my corrupted profile (which is now fixed), it's working perfectly. Can't wait to play some more this evening :messenger_beaming:

If some of you are flying in career mode and forgets to use the proper mix and lean for fuel when flying youre skyhawk You can add a button for refueling in the middle of the flight. Dont remember what the name is but its there. IF you want to use a bug against the sim in career mode to get s ranking, just "ask for flightfollowing" in the com. Then cancel it and do it agian. I did it about 10 times in a career mission to test it, with my company where the flight time was 1 hour, worked like a charm.

Are the pictures taken during the Photo challenges saved anywhere automatically?

They don’t seem to go in the screenshot folder and I don’t see any option to save them when the photo is taken. Are you supposed to F12 each of them manually?

I’m using the PC GP version.

Well gaf, today is my first day of logging in and my lawd I fucking love it.

I'm working through the lessons as I've never played this type of game before, is the attitude and horizon line meant to be so jumpy? I'm playing on controller fwiw.

And another issue is that the plane is always off centre so I can see the horizon dropping, do I need to constantly be feathering the left stick to adjust?

Lastly, even when I've pitched up and take my finger off the stick, it seems to still want to return to a pitch down position. Do I need to pitch more or like above feather the control constantly?

Planes have settings for all those things. Not sure how it works on a controller - my 16 button, double hat, 7 axis flight stick doesn't have enough for all the controls. You need to see how you can access the trim controls with a controller.

That's the natural behavior of aircrafts (a sort of interplay of pitch, angle of attack, and flight path angle, decided by a number of factors, including f.ex. speed and weight distribution) and why they have trim adjustment controls (which basically just shifts the zero position of aircraft controls).

I think actually you should be able to do trim directly from the controller as well, but idk what the button combination is atm. Check the controller binds.

Edit: Perhaps something here:

RB + RS up/down to adjust trim.

You do get training on this when going for your commercial licence.

It’s very fiddly. Controller limitation at play here!

Hey guys. Trying to get into 24 after loving 20, but the game isn't making things easy for me.

I can't play the first mission. The guy I'm supposed to take on a roundtrip is stuck in my left wing, I'm stuck on the backseat and the engine switches off as soon as the mission starts and can't be turned back on again.

Anybody encountered this? Is there a fix?

I have now over 100h in the game and mainly just doing career mode. Career mode is not "broken", but its flawed in many areas. Skydive is one of them...just dont do these missions yet. 0% time score happens basically all the time, even if I cut the last leg to the landing. Its always 0%. The payouts for skydiving are shitty as well compared to what a grindfest this career mode is currently. Do only Cargo and VIP charter missions first (for your own company). Cargo pays 100k and VIP charter is nearly 200k. However since a few days, it seems that no new missions are generated. So when you did all available missions its basically "game over" right now. One guy on steam has now in whole US no any cargo missions anymore and I can confirm that for my unlocked areas no new missions are spawning as well. I dont know if this was disabled by purpose. I have the impression they are changing lots of stuff in the background and never tell what they do. I could go on, with stuff which doesnt work properly in career mode or is heavily unbalanced....but for today there is a first patch announced....which I really hope will fix quite a few things. Otherwise there is now also the new Neofly addon available for MSFS2024. With this you can also play a career mode which I am pretty sure is currently already the better alternative to ingame career mode in its current state. :(

Never encountered this one. But usually when something strange happens...try restarting your mission. If the bug persist....abort mission (there is no penalties for it) and try again to start the mission. If bug still persists...abort and restart the whole game. If than the bug is still there....I dont know...guess you are fucked.....try another mission than.

Also little tip...if you somehow crash your plane in career mode (on your own company). Hit Alt+F4 immediately (dont click anything otherwise). You will get a hit on your reputaion level, but your plane is still fine. Otherwise you would need to do repairs for several 100K's...which mean especially in the beginning "game over" for most players and restarting career becomes here actually necessary.

Happened to me also. To fix the back seat thing, adjust the default camera position. For the engine cutting out, that's most likely your fuel tank selector.

I figured out how to get a maximum time score in skydiving. Basically it gives you very little leeway beyond the stated mission time from the briefing, so if it says 30 minutes then you can't spend a second longer in the air.

It seems impossible to follow the blue boxes and get up to 11,000 ft and back down that quickly in a Cessna 172, so I go for maximum climb rate and cut out most of the flight plan. Then I'm back down again as fast as possible. Got congratulated by the ATC person for saving so much fuel.

Also when it comes to the engine cutting out, try to push the red lever(wich is for the fuel mixture) in the cockpit, all the way in and then try to start the engine again. It has happened for me and i do that and start the engine with the shift+e command:)

AI summary: The article addresses exaggerated claims about the game's data usage, specifically the false notion that it uses up to 81GB per hour. Through various tests, the author demonstrates that the actual data usage is much lower, typically around 10-15GB per hour, and even less with the rolling cache enabled. The tests include different scenarios, such as flying over New York City and the Grand Canyon, with both unlimited and limited bandwidth settings. The article concludes that while the game does use significant data, it is far from the extreme figures reported by some media outlets
  • Typical data usage: Around 10-15 GB per hour.
  • With rolling cache enabled: Data usage can drop to under 3 GB per hour.
  • Peak data usage: The simulator can use up to 180 Mb/s of internet bandwidth, which translates to about 81 GB per hour. However, this peak rate is not sustained for long periods.

Is there anyway to up the scenery? Got this on ultra and Bath still looks like a weird industrial estate..
I think that's an unavoidable problem with auto-gen scenery. It knows that there are buildings there and roughly what height they are, so it fills them in as best it can. I'm guessing there are no more giant canyons near Keynsham, like there were in the beta.

Unique buildings need to be added via photogrammetry or placed by hand, so they mustn't have got round to doing Bath yet. I've seen that in older flight sims, where you could buy third-party updates for England that added hand-modelled landmarks like the Royal Crescent but placed them in the middle of an auto-gen town that looks like Swindon.
