MS has spent >$47m, Sony >$30m on advertising, PS4 ads > XB1 ads in online actions

50% weaker GPU, 50% more advertising.

i still see ads of PS in the champions league, is that really cheap or this is data only for the USA?

Also not surprised Xbox One is pandering to people who watch Family Guy.

You need to look up the definition of the word "pandering."

Microsoft is trying to sell them something, not give them something. Where better than to do it during a popular show? Would it make more sense to advertise it mid-afternoon, when the demographic is largely not watching TV?

I find it strange that Microsoft is spending a ton of money advertising during baseball when it doesn't have a good MLB baseball video game.

I want to watch The Talking Dead.

You read that wrong, Sony is advertising the PS4 during Family guy and Microsoft is advertising the Xbox One during the Talking Dead.

Wait a minute, I just saw number five under Microsoft. So I guess you're correct.

What does that mean? Is the PS4 somehow classier that appeals to a different demographic than the XB1?

(pro tip - they are practically the same machine with 90% of the same library)

Also the list in the OP shows Family Guy under Sony also

How does Sony afford to advertise when they have no money?
jk

This made me laugh...

Haven't been in a math class since 1993. Meh.. guess I thought 60 million to 30 million would be 50% more. Not a big deal to me though... MS always spends more on advertising than Sony. They did last gen too. Not sure what the big deal is about this thread.

...But not half as much as this did :D

I think it's US only. And CL sponsorship definitely isn't cheap

Nissan joins the other official sponsors – Sony, Gazprom, UniCredit and MasterCard. Ford said in March that it was going to drop out of its 22-year partnership.

The deal means Nissan will be involved through its exclusive products and services. UEFA added that the agreement includes the UEFA Super Cups in 2014 to the end of 2017.

Neither party has yet revealed how much the four-year deal will be worth. Current sponsorship packages are said to be worth at least €54.5 million ($74.6 million, £45 million) per season.

As someone who generally finds most advertising to be irritating and abrasive, I find MS's generally presence on TV to be some of the worst. (Samsung is probably the actual worst.) I will say though that this is far more due to the ludicrous amounts of Surface advertising, not so much the Xbox One. Regardless, I certainly feel like I see a lot more Xbox ads than Playstation.

In a general, I wonder how much this ad presence is effecting the consoles. I'm betting not a lot. With the pricing being consistent and general public sentiment behind Sony, I don't know how much can be done outside of having some really killer apps to display to push a console, which neither console has. All those things being equal, I think most consumers would probably go PS4.

Now, if MS can start touting a $50 difference this holiday, ads may do a great deal to push the notion of a value difference. Up to this point though, I guess I'm not surprised they haven't seemed as effective.

You guys are being pedantic.
A colorful game is not necessarily cartoony, and vice versa. And "arcadey" is a gameplay descriptor.

That said, I think the initial dismissal of SO as being not an anomaly according to one poster, stems from bitterness that Insomniac Games jumped ship to XB. What else could possibly motivate someone to downplay something positive about an XBO game?

Don't give shit about his post history. It's basic maths.

Maybe maths was different in 1993.
Dat working man's math.

I don't see what the big deal is about this. You can't tell the difference in marketing efforts below 50 million.

Thanks podcast beyond

they both advertise during Family Guy so this is a very dumb post and you should feel bad for making it.
I am a bit surprised Sony would spend money on the people who watch Family Guy which is why I did not say it. I guess they really want the CoD/Madden crowd.
I would have expected Sportscenter though. WWE is a bit surprising. I would have spent the money used on Family Guy on another show honestly.
Xbox has always been a dude bro console.

Edit: MLB would have made way more sense because The Show franchise.

Keep seeing a bunch of Xbox One adds during the world series games on Fox. Not sure why Sony didn't go after this with MLB: The Show in the background.

I agree, although I saw a playstation logo near the scoreboard and there were plenty of "destiny...win a ps4 with taco bell" commercial.... MLB The Show would have been perfect lol

I'd say it's a good chunk higher on each end by the end of the year if you count the third-party co-marketing commitments as well. Those buys don't necessarily would have been done by Sony or MS directly.

I could see that. I bet both companies hired a different PR company and they targeted what they think older males watch, which would explain Family Guy.

I've should have used better terms I guess. Thought my point was obvious though since the game sticks out in comparison to other games that get a lot of advertisements (especially during live sports).

Sony advertises LBP3 and SingStar during The Walking Dead, along with Driveclub and TLOU.

So Sony's action:dollar ratio is 0.18 compared to Microsoft's 0.09.

A 100% gap.

Very scientifically, this shows the hidden importance of having 100% more ROPs in your GPU. Obviously.

Or it could be the hidden importance of having 100% better GPGPU performance.

Word of mouth is only going to get stronger after LBP3, the GTA V bundle, the PS Experience and The Order/Bloodborne releases early next year.

Agreed. Can't deny XBO's release schedule and deals this holiday though. I said I would buy an X1 for MCC, but Susnet Overdrive is tempting me to go in early, and Quantum Break looks pretty sick.

Of course. The Xbone has a good rhythm going, but it's easier for Sony to build on the great momentum they already have than to try to create one where there is none while your competitor has it, like MS is trying to do.

And price point.

And not screwing up the 1 chance you have at a console reveal.

But I agree, I find there is a greater variety of games available on the PS4.

I agree. I even posted this in another thread earlier as to how first impressions of consoles are always important.

There's a whole lot of stereotyping going on. Family Guy watchers are all CoD/Madden dudebros? I don't watch the show anymore because it's a shell of what it once was, but it definitely had its time of being funny and I've never been a CoD/Madden fan.

Well. the One launched two months ago here (Netherlands) and I did not even notice that. Not on television, not in the cinemas, not in the folders and not really on the internet. And I usually keep an eye out for gaming stuff, so clearly those millions did not go to here.

I think I saw more Sunset Overdrive commercials on Raw last night than PS4, like three different versions of the SO commercial.

Sunset Overdrive was all over the Thursday night NFL game too. It's certainly interesting that they'd put such a big push behind a game like that.

Modern Family Guy is pandering to the lowest common denominator in terms of jokes and writing. The only show worse in my mind is Brinkleberry.
I may have generalized a bit, but I loathe what it has become. I really feel like marketing to that fanbase is not worth the money.

Also the marketing is pandering to older males as well. WWE, Football, MLB, etc.
The Wal-Mart Destiny commercials annoy me to death because it is the worst stereotype of a gamer. Nintendo commercials and maybe the actual Destiny ad are the last things I can think of that were decent. I could rant about how less creative commercials have become since the PSX era but I do not want to derail the thread.

Edit: Actually I am surprised Tosh.0 is not on the list, but it may be 6th place.

Mostly I am angry that something like this exists

I've been seeing a ton of xbox adverts here in the UK, they've been pretty much non stop since the summer. First the rocky games advert, then FH2 and now SSO.

Haven't seen a PS4 advert since just before Destiny's launch and before that Infamous, so it's not surprising that MS has spent more $ on advertising. I've even seen more Nintendo adverts than PS4 the past few weeks.
