MS Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player: Who's getting it?

Equilibrium is the worst film ever made!

Seriously!

Ok, not seriously, but it is horrible!

It features some amazing gunfighting.

And it has BATMAN in it woohoo!

Lord of the Ring is not HD-DVD exclusive. New Line is a Warner company and is not format exclusive. Not that it would matter seeing how everyone will release their movies on Blu-ray sooner or later.

hey I have a quick question...

I have been hearing that you need the 360 vga cable to get true HD signal out of the player...

So here are my 2 questions..

1. My Sony 32" LCD tv has an RGB connection on the back of it. Can I use the 360 VGA cable?

2. My Sony 32" LCD does not support 1080p, only up to 1080i. Is it worth it to even look into getting that VGA cable? Or just stick with my component cables?

It is rumored to be an HD DVD exclusive. But thanks for the info about how everyone will release all their movies on Blu Ray anyway. That seems like it deserves its own thread. Go make one!

The player outputs 720p and 1080i from component, so you probably don't need VGA.

Not sure what you mean by RGB - European SCART? You'd still need a VGA-in to use VGA. Many Sony TVs have at least DVI in, which you could use with an adapter.

VGA would give you a few minor advantages - more native resolution choices - likely matching the x768 res of your set. Sometimes improved colors. Upscaling of normal DVD content to 1080i and 720p.

new line supporting hd-dvd more than bluray is good news for this horror fan.

I'll have The Thing day one, and already have Slither and Land of the Dead (they were combos).

David Lynch's stuff coming to HD-DVD when he gets a say is another biggie.

I'm not routing for either format to fail though. I'll have a bluray player before long, but for the time being the more horror stuff heading to HD-DVD the better.

For those that are buying this next week, amazon.com has a deal right now that if you buy 3 HD-DVD's from a pretty large list, you get 10% off the purchase and 10% off all HD-DVD purchases for the next year. Not a bad deal considering their prices are already lower than Best Buy and others.

There you go. Just make sure the movie you are buying is eligible.

How can you tell if they are eligible? From reading the site, it sounds like it applies to all HD-DVD's and Blu- Ray movies.

They may be. I just thought it had to have the offer written in the description.

thanks... looks like everything is elligable that i've looked at so far.

The only one I found that isn't eligible is Miami Vice but I will get 10% off of it when it comes out in December. And it is the DVD/HD-DVD combo as well so I can lend it to my parents. :)

Right now another great place to stock on on HD DVD's is buy.com

They have a $10 OFF coupon using google checkout.

MI:3 is about $20 using this, and some of the Combo HD DVD/DVD titles will come out to about $25 or less.

They just raised their prices too, they were even better a few days ago. I got Tokyo Drift, The Breakup and Good Night, and Good Luck for about $22 each on COMBO units.

You might want to try buying $21 regular (not Combo) titles and adding something that costs about $9 or so (I got myself quite a few graphic novels doing this) so that the total ends up at just over $30, then use the google checkout for the ten bucks off.

If you are a Firefly or sci-fi fan, YOU MUST GET SERENITY!

Amazon's prices for HD-DVDs and Blu-Rays are awesome to begin with. 10% off for a year is a winning situation.

I just put in an order for Serenity and The Thing, which I was going to get anyway, along with Terminator 3 which I mainly picked because I hadn't seen it in ages and don't already own it (otherwise i'd totally have gone for Batman Begins). The special HD-DVD extras are meant to be good on Terminator 3 too, which was part of the decision.

No doubt about it, amazon.com's prices are a lot better than retail, and their 10% off is really good too (I started using it a few months ago). I got the MI:3 box set for like $50 and Slither for about $22 (it was normally $25 a few weeks ago).

Buy.com though is essently 33% OFF their prices if you get a perfect $30 sale down to $20, so I took advantage of that over and over just the past couple of weeks.

After that's gone, I'm definitely going back to amazon.com though.

I can't tell shit form the interwebs about the Dune release. I hope it has digitally remastered 5.1 and lovely IQ - that would be enough for me. This movie is crying out for a lucas-style remaster of the FX - everything else, costumes, sets, looks incredible.

Yep. All of the essential elements are there. As you say, it just needs a little sprucing up.

Just ordered MI:3, The Corpse Bride, and Batman Begins from Amazon. It automatically enrolled me into promotion. With super saver shipping and promotion, 3 HD-DVD's came to a total of $60 :)

goood times are ahead :D

You know I was thinking about this earlier and I will not care about re-buying movies slowly in either next-gen format depending on what I like (since I will have the option of both at least) and all that. I'll definitely be picking up a few hd-dvds when this accessory comes out even though my set is 720p, the Dune pic stinkles posted sold me. haha.

However, I will commit ritual seppuku when Criterion decides to support either/both formats and re-releases their library. I am most heavily emotionally invested in that part of my collection. Funny thing is, Criterion was always right there supporting new optical formats, but they haven't done so yet here, that I know of.

Anyone know any good sites that review DVDs, HD-DVD's, and Blu-Ray disks.

Not just the movie review ... but detailed info on the quality of the transfer ... codecs ... audio ... etc??

Thanks in Advance!!!

I am actually looking forward to this next week. I have been holding out buying Batman Begins and The Bourne Supremacy until now. I ordered them and The Polar Express from amazon.com as well as Miami Vice. I queued up a bunch of HD-DVD's in my Netflix Que. Can't wait.

Man I hope we get the 360 HD-DVD add on at work. Anyone know if places like Target and Wal mart are going to carry this? I work at Target but I haven't seen any communication on it.

Thanks guys!

I just ordered:

Corpse Bride
Kingdom of Heaven : Directors Cut
Black Hawk Down

For BluRay.

10% off this order ... and 10% off all BluRay/HD-DVD titles for the next year!

I'm psyched!

Ummm ... the last several posts have been discussing the HD-DVD/BluRay offer from Amazon.

Just saying thanks for pointing it out.

I actually was googling around for some sites and stopped at that one. Definitely seemed to be the most up-to-date of what I saw.

Thanks for the confirmation!

From reading through the reviews, it seems like they just don't have enough context for good comparisons yet. They have a lot of trouble deciding if audio is up to scratch, but it's actually really clear and well done.

Amazing how few HD DVD and Blu Ray discs have any specific extras. i suppose it'll get better.

I never watch that stuff anyway, I'm just in it for the resolution.

OT, but I found this at AVS Forums. Value Electronics is offering a deal where you could get two free HD-DVD's when you buy a package from them. On top of three HD-DVD deal that Toshi is offering it means you could get 5 free HD-DVD's when you purchase a standalone.

http://www.valueelectronics.com/Toshiba_HD-A2_and_HD-XA2.htm

BTW, has anyone here bought the Excalibur HD-DVD yet? That movie is one of my favorite King Arthur flicks and I'd love to have this if the disc isn't shite.

My V for Vendetta turned up today. MI:III and 12 monkeys should be here next week. Shame I sold my V1 and am waiting for the 360 version :/

I'm already rebuying in HD - 12 monkeys is an example. I'm fairly sure I'm going to dump most of the DVDs that I think will be reissued in the next 2-3 years. Other more obscure ones I'll keep just in case

Its just that its hard to watch SDDVD when you've seen HD, so my viewing habits are likely to skew towards HD wherever possible.

This bit scares me:

All 6 of Xbox 360's hardware threads are hard at work while playing back an HD DVD. At the moment, the player software pushes Xbox 360 harder than any other (save, perhaps, Gears of War during some particularly busy parts of the game).

Doesn't bode well for quiet operation considering my 360 sounds like an asthmatic elephant when playing games

at least the US should get the player a couple of weeks before the UK, giving me time to jump on a standalone player if necessary

All impressions I`ve heard indicate that the 360 is quiet when playing hd-dvds. Also, most of the noise when playing games is from the main dvd drive, which won`t be operating when playing a film.

It's DVD all over again.

A crap load of these titles will be re-released as deluxe versions with higher video bitrates, better sound, and HD extras.

:/

I have a question about the VGA cable. If you buy a VGA to DVI adapter and then get a DVI to HDMI adapter would that work? late last night I was wondering about this and visited a few sites and saw all kinds of adapters and it looked like it would work. then again my eyes were barely open.

It won't work.
