MS Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player: Who's getting it?

ChrisAllenFiz said:
All impressions I`ve heard indicate that the 360 is quiet when playing hd-dvds. Also, most of the noise when playing games is from the main dvd drive, which won`t be operating when playing a film.

Yep - the noise from the 360 will be fan noise, lower since the drive isn't running - and the HD DVD drive itself is very quiet and very cool. I haven't done a scientific test, but my quick impression was that it was way quiet. I'll use that solution to watch regular DVDs too, for obvious reasons.

Not for quite a long time. Namely, when the format war is over.

I'm thinking of using the same strategy to choose between MS and Sony. Just wait until one wins. I'm sure I'll miss loads of great stuff, but what the heck.

If you are into your movies and have a HD set, you owe it to yourself to see either HDDVD or bluray (or both if you need full studio coverage). and the 360 add on is a great price to get into it.

Even if bluray wins, its not like your drive will suddenly be disabled.

When HEAT or Band of Brothers comes to HD DVD is when I will buy this add on.

That may not be far off. HBO is putting out The Sopranos on HD-DVD. So it's an encouraging sign that HBO could bring their other HD series to HD-DVD. Band of Brothers would be an instant purchase for me.

What happens when you stick a 360 game DVD in the HD-DVD add-on drive? ANSWER ME STINKLES!!!!

Probably the same thing that happens when you put a DVD in a Wii.

I imagine it will say something more along the lines of, "Please jam this bitch in another slot."

WHAT YOU SAY!!!?????????

Rome and The Wire!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU WILL BE MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! More and more this format war comes down to key libraries, not technology. I am getting both formats but most of my movie purchases thus far are HD DVD. Totally subjective of course. I'm sure the Blu Ray line up looks just as good to folks with different tastes.

Work is 14 miles from here. So no. Ask Arne. Besides, next time I see one will be next week when I pick one up from Gamecrazy.

Holy crap, 14 miles?!? In Seattle traffic? Your commutes must suck.

Alright Stinkles. You win this round. BUT NEXT TIME NO EXCUSES!!!

Bungie is way closer, but no HD DVD drives there. My commute is 14 mins. Because the Green Destiny is a traffic-violating speed-rapist.

TOTAL MIS-REPRESENTATION IN YOUR PREVIOUS POST! You made it sound like you had it at Bungie offices. :(

BTW, my 14 year old 4 door Maroon Corolla laughs at your "Green Destiny". I have broken the sonic barrier with it on I-5 in LA and Seattle.

I was certain about getting one but now I'm reconsidering. I'll be picking up a PS3 anyway and even still the only two movies I plan on getting for now are MI:3 and Superman Returns.

Every release by Warner Bros will be on Blu-ray and HD DVD. Warner is not exclusive to HD DVD.

Where did you get the idea anyone said Warner was? Again I ask what Blu-Ray stuff has to do with who's getting the HD-DVD player and why??

new line supporting hd-dvd more than bluray is good news for this horror fan.

I'll have The Thing day one, and already have Slither and Land of the Dead (they were combos).

David Lynch's stuff coming to HD-DVD when he gets a say is another biggie.

I'm not routing for either format to fail though. I'll have a bluray player before long, but for the time being the more horror stuff heading to HD-DVD the better.
So Lynch movies will be on HD-DVD exclusively? Does that by any chance mean we could finally get all of Twin Peaks on a format other than VHS?

Twin Peaks on HD-DVD would be fantastic.

Does anyone know of any reviews for the player yet? This thing is coming out this week and I've seen nothing! I really want it but the 360 DVD player has some bad gamma issues and I'd like to hear from someone who has seen one in action before I drop $200 on it.

Hd-Dvd isn't region free
Code 1 = North America + Jap
Code 2 = Europe + Africa
Code 3 = the others :D
Other people in this thread says HD DVD has no region encoding. I'm confused

IMO, there are no gamma issues anymore. The firmware update that enabled upconversion over VGA GREATLY enhanced all dvd playback.

These are the BR regions you talking about.
afaik HDDVD doesn't have region-coding (yet).

Hey, it's the 6th and the thing is supposed to be out like tomorrow or wed. Any retailers seen any sign of 'em yet?

Correct. HD-DVD currently has no region-coding currently, but may in the future.

I went to Best Buy and Gamestop today and neither place would even give me a date.

In fact, the Gamestop guy actually went to his copy of GAME INFORMER to get a release date!?!?!?!? Is that how they're doing it these days??

According to my Gamestop, they have already shipped. But the clerk could not determine when it is due in the store.

really? I just watched a movie last night thru component and gamma still looked terrible (after the dash update). My TV is not good for VGA because you lose certain functions like sharpness. There needs to be some kind of review unit somewhere if this thing is out in the next 2 days.

I'm posting in here to avoid starting a new thread. My TV's only working input is the VGA. Lucky for me I use the VGA output of the 360. My question is how the video hookup works from the HD-DVD player. Can I use my current video output of the 360 to watch the movies up to 1080i? Or does the player have its own output that needs to be connected to watch any movies at all?

You use the same connection from your 360. You just hook up the player through USB to your 360.

Cool, thanks. I'm picking up the player and getting Army of Darkness on HD-DVD. HAIL TO THE KING BABY.

Will be picking up mine on 8th - probably around 1pm when I get off all nighter shift. I called my GS earlier and 8th is the date they are getting the system...

I'll be getting Apollo 13 and probably either/both Bourne Supremacy and The Fugitive. But I don't think I will be able to check the system out till later that day, until I had some sleep and rest, and finishing watchng Lost. :D

Ok, so as much as I love home theater and A/V stuff, there are definitely some people here who are a little more knowledgeable in the 1080p arena than me, because I don't yet have a 1080p set. So this question goes to you guys.

For lack of an HDMI solution directly from Microsoft, what about something like this:

http://www.hdtvsupply.com/10vgatohdco.html
1080p VGA TO HDMI CONVERTER
These 1080p component to DVI / HDMI adapters allow older analog devices to be integrated into the modern home theater.

The component to DVI / HDMI adapter connects component video home theater devices or analog video graphic cards (VGA) to HDMI compliant digital monitors

In theory, wouldn't this solution work for those who have to have HDMI, and wouldn't this solve the DVD upscaling issue for those with component?

Yes, that would work fine, but personally I think you'd be better off with a more flexible receiver that does the same thing, plus is a sweet receiver. This thing is cheap though and will work for any VGA source. I just think a receiver would be more useful in the long run - upscaling component, S-Video and so on too. The object you link to will do a straight analog-digital conversion of VGA - but I'm not sure what effect that'll have on IQ at 1080p and of course it's no use for folks with component.

I ordered mine from Amazon, and right now they're estimating delivery in a week or two. Time to set up Netflix for HD-DVD's. Wheeee!

Guess will see if Gamestop calls me tonight or tommorow...but yeah, they're supposed to have them in on the 8th

....you can buy them now from Amazon btw :)

Yeah, no call from Aeris. Although I've never received a call from them.

Uhhhh, that kinda scares me. No one at the Gamestop seems to be too knowledgable about it so maybe the release date really isn't solid. ****, I hope that's not the case

I think they're just having stocking issues because of all the orders. Amazon says that it's been released, but that it "usually ships within 2 to 3 days."

Ok I bit the bullet and preordered mine from EB and it should be coming in tomorrow. I also changed my setting on Netflix to give me HDDVD when available so I have MI 3 on HDDVD coming in tomorrow. I will give you guys my opinion on the player once I get my hands on it. I will be hooking it up to my 50 inch Samsung plasma through my Harmon Karden receiver.

So for those who have been to their local stores asking for the player, does it look like quantities/demand are good enough to simply walk in and pick one up?

Not at mine. Everytime I call to ask if it's there, they tell me that it doesn't matter because if I don't have a preorder I won't be getting it.
