LOS ANGELES -- A huge mudslide crashed down on homes in a coastal hamlet of storm-battered Southern California, killing one person and damaging at least 15 homes, authorities said.

A four-block area of homes in tiny La Conchita were affected, said Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Tom Kruschke. Numerous injuries were reported, he said.

La Conchita is a slip of a town pressed between a highway and a towering coastal bluff northwest of Los Angeles. The town is between Carpinteria and Ventura.

Several houses were damaged there during powerful storms in the 1990s. A retaining wall had been constructed after that slide.

The hillside cascaded down as authorities were evacuating about 200 residents from near the unstable area. Search and rescue teams were dispatched to look for anyone who may have been buried.

The Red Cross established a shelter at the Ventura County fairgrounds. Victims are being transported to the fairgrounds on buses.

Southern California has been swamped by extremely heavy rainfall since last week. More rain is forecast to arrive Monday evening. Authorities said more dirt and mud might slide from the hill if rains are heavy.

This shit is getting out of hand, im sick of the rain. I want to see a nice sunny day again.

It won't stop raining. A day or two of rain every couple of weeks during winter is nice, but this is too much. Well, we need the rain anyways I guess.

We have around 3 small mudslides here on our hill -- I'll try to take pictures if I'm brave enough to take my cam out in the rain. ^_^

It really just dawned on me how much damage this much rain on a constant basis can do. I left a voicemail for my cousin, I hope everything's okay.

Finally able to capture some images of the mudslides today -- beautiful day to take pictures too. The first mudlide was right behind my car, probably about 20 feet from my house, the second one is maybe around 100 feet. Our neighbort's is down the hill about 30 ft.

It's not very often you'll find Dowtown LA as clear as it was today:
