Multi-console Bros: what's the best way to add extra inputs to your TV?

With the imminent arrival of Switch 2, I have the problem that my TV only has four HDMI inputs, all of which are occupied.

So what's the best way to expand that, ideally in a 'plug and forget' sort of way? I've looked at HDMI switches, and they don't seem particularly good. Crappy remote controls, uncertain support for different resolutions, VRR, etc.

A home cinema amp might be an option, but obviously way more expensive, and I've no idea which ones are good and relatively futureproof.

Any recommendations, or things to avoid?

The correct answer is HDMI switcher.

But I'm cheap so I use a Yamaha stereo receiver I found for 20 bucks and programmed a remote for it to give me a few extra.

Use tech made by startups, some of them are worthy, seriously.

The best way is to get an AV receiver and some sort of surround system. Nowadays the sound from vidya is so good and you're losing out if you rely on just TV speakers.

If you don't want to spend a lot your only option is an HDMI switcher but yes in my experience they all suck.

I unplug one cable and then proceed to connect the other cable.

Not that much of an annoyance considering it takes 5 seconds and it results in hours of fun.

The magic of my main Samsung "smart" TV means that every time I change a cable it forgets what that cable is supposed to do and requires setup to identify it correctly again.

HDMI switcher is the way to go, but you'll want to get one that supports HDMI 2.1.
This does sound like a good option. I found this one among the more "premium" offerings on Amazon, and it claims to support 2.1. Seems bizarre that this device would do that across 5 ports for £70, while an AV receiver costing more than 10 times as much might only support 2.1 on a limited number of its inputs.

Some reviews say it's great, others mention a long delay between switching and poor picture quality. Is this thing, or other things like it, actually legit?

They are legit, but performance will vary. I would look at the reviews and if it's Amazon can always get one and send it back if it doesnt work.

I've always used an avr. I bought a refurb Denon avr recently which has 5 hdmi inputs. If you dont want to run surround speakers you can do just stereo mode and hook up a sound bar or a couple speakers. I wouldnt trust a cheap hdmi switch to support vrr or 4k60fps.
I ordered 2 avr's from this site. 1st one lasted 10 years and still works, but upgraded to a newer one recently. They have a warranty and look new.

I use this to go between a Series X, 4K Blu Ray player and an Apple TV: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BRSR8GNQ?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_5

Even has a remote to switch between signals. Works for HDMI 2.1 as well.

Ugreen are the best brand when it comes to chargers and HDMI stuff in my opinion.
I purchased that last month, it gave me constant sound drops on the PS5 Pro, not sure if it's a product issue or mine was defective but I sent it back and replaced it with the below, I only needed the three inputs anyway as the Sky, ATV and sound via eArc are all plugged directly into the tv.
