Multiple people shot at Wisconsin Sikh temple

Not that it would be right to do it to any group but it is so frustrating that this fuck didn't even take two seconds to figure out what this place was that he was attacking. To a certain extent I wish he had been caught alive just so he could comprehend his incredible stupidity in addition to his horrible bigotry. This is all assuming that tatoo info is correct and it was some kind of retaliation.

Do they not teach you about world religions in America? I was taught about most religions in primary school at the age of 8!

It's going to be different for every county, let alone state, but for me at least the answerer is no, they didn’t.

Nah I know we had elective religion courses in high school but there's no way I would want to take that class. I don't believe religion should be taught in schools anyway.

Lol. No wonder then. I didn't go to the best school when I was younger, but i remember visiting a church, a mosque, a gurdwara, everything. Just despicable, and now he's dead, too. How can we stop people like him anyway?

Why should religion not be taught as a part of history? Teaching something doesn't have to be an endorsement of it.

Why not? Just teach it like you would teach any mythology class.

Or history class, both in fact.

No, they didn't. I would have walked out if that had happened in high school.

Mentioning it is fine as it has influenced history. Going in depth for any religion should not be in school.

On a side note, I wonder If the presidential campaigns will take tomorrow off and stop negative ads in Wisconsisn?

If they don't it'll look pretty bad IMO. As if Sikh victims don't matter as much as the folks in Colorado.

RIP to all the innocent victims.

It's being reported as a case of domestic terrorism in the NYC media, which I think is correct.

Has there been any news on the identity of the shooter and potential motivation?

Because any mainstream religion they could teach is about as relevant as teaching any other works of fiction? Why would you require that? It's an elective.

I don't think it matters if you believe them as fact or fiction but what they have to offer you in terms of how you should behave to one another is perfectly relevant.

Just second and third-hand information. White guy, tank top, "9/11 tattoo"

I'm thinking an Alex Jones crazy, but we'll see.

Why ? whats the harm in being educated in other peoples religions ?

Because people will throw a shit fit. People will be offended by something you say about their particular religion. And teaching their (true) religion in the same manner along with all those bogus religions will be viewed as offensive somehow.

Again, there is a distinction between teaching kids religion and teaching them about it. It is essential that children in any modern country be educated about the peoples, cultures, and beliefs they will encounter throughout their lives, especially in a multicultural and highly heterogeneous country like the United States. Ignorance literally kills.

Look, the difference between religion and fiction, is that people kill, and get killed, over religion. That makes it kinda important. I'm not saying a full, in-depth course of study is needed, but people need to know this shit.

Not really.

Unless we are then going into all of their problems, inaccuracies, hypocrisies, etc.

Just heard about this a few minutes ago from my mother-in-law, then came here to see what's up.

And now my F-I-L, the racist Kentucken, knows and he's on the back porch bellowing with his whiskey breath about how right the gunman was. I turned to my M-I-L and said "can you at least tell him they're not Muslim, have no connection to Islam, and are not in any way "the same damn thing"?"

Teaching about religions is fine and when i was in high school we learned about Sihks, Bahai, Zoroastrianism, animists, etc. Learning what people believe is necessary to learn about culture and history. Theres a difference between learning about something and learning how to do something.

This really makes no sense. Religion is part of our history and our lives whether you believe in it or not. Going in depth merely raises the knowledge people have about other faiths, it is not being used as some kind of indoctrination technique. Many school districts in America already go in depth into different religions. Usually the schools that don't are the ones that don't have the resources to teach it.

The shooter probably thought they were muslims. I know that Sikhs are often mistaken for muslims.

Huh...checking Wikipedia, there's doesn't seem to be many of them. 19m in India, just 700,000 in the U.S.

I know, right? Some people automatically think that teaching about religion is some kind of indoctrination.

It is a relatively small religion. But assholes see the turban and make their mind up.

I never needed religion to know that I shouldn't kill, rape, molest or steal from anyone. People have done all that in the name of religion. Regardless, I know from other sources that public school that Sikhs are peaceful people. Throwing a bit of religion as this crazy guy in grade school wouldn't have prevented what happened today. He is fucking crazy.

CNN says witnesses report the gunman had a 9/11 tattoo

*sigh*

You know who to thank. Islamophobic hate merchants; Robert Spencer, Daniel Pipes, Pamela Geller, etc. The reason why these nutjobs are so free to espouse hatred and lead their band of lunatic lemmings is because so much hysteria surrounding Muslims is tolerated by media and elsewhere. Don't forget, these are the same folks Anders Breivik cited dozens of time in his Manifesto before he massacred Norwegians.

I think teaching people about religion is probably the best thing that could happen to prevent this kind of thing, assuming it is hate related. I mean teaching ABOUT the religions, keeping the ability to not have it forced upon students and letting them make their own minds up is the best and imo the only way religions should be taught.

In a perfect world eh ?

Freedom of Speech really irritates me at times.

This is among the most ignorant things I've ever read on GAF. Surely you can see the difference in being preached to and learning about a different world view. My wife, an atheist, is a high school teacher in Canada who teaches a unit on world religions in her Grade 12 English class. The unit is in addition to the set curriculum because she feels it is important for her students to gain a bit of perspective on other cultures and world views. It also just so happens that a very large percentage of her students are Sikh (she teaches in Brampton). I can imagine the atmosphere will be a bit different starting in September.

You still don't get it. It's not about the values that a religion brings, but simply the facts, that I think should be taught. When did it start? What do they believe? Where do they pray? What is the cultural significance?

Treat it like a history class. Maybe If everyone was taught properly about religions, there may be slightly less bigotry.

No your absolutely right you shouldn't need religion to tell you that. But religion has and is a major part of a lot of peoples lives and knowing what people believe and why they believe is an important step to stopping atrocities like this.

Teaching about religion cures mental illness now? The dude (same as any other mass shooter) is/was ill in their head. These nuts aren't your run of the mill bigots who keep their thoughts about people different from them a secret from society.

Yeah I'll give you that one, but it would certainly help in a lot of other cases.

Yes, and it's an elective. As it should be when you're talking about teaching bullshit. If you want to learn more, fine. If not, don't. I would rather we work on removing religion more from our lives rather than try to get people to understand a whitewashed version of their hypocritical beliefs.

Yes. Everybody who commits an atrocity is mental, and there is nothing we can do, or try to do. Let's just leave it be.

Pretty shit way to go forward, don't you think?

EDIT- yep, it won't affect madmen. But it may help some other people.

That's ridiculous.

Religions are social groups. You should learn about them just like you should learn about all major groups in human society. Other groups like "democrats", and "America" are basically fictions too, in that they're entirely made up.... But if you didn't study the beliefs and activities of these groups and how they interact, you are a blind fool in this world.

Any atheist who prides themself on not knowing or teaching information about the religions they critique can kiss my ass. You're bad at atheism, then.

I'm not understanding the arguments against teaching about world religions. Religion is a major part of every society. Why is learning about them a bad thing?
