Multiple reports of joycon connectivity issues in Switch previews

So, technically, how would something like this get patched (if it is a software issue)? Would they boost the power consumption of the BT antenna at the cost of some battery life or what?

It does seem strange that it is only the left joy-con, the right joy-con is the one with the IR pointer and NFC, where the left has only a capture feature.

The numbers although small are a high enough percentage considering the low numbers of units out though.

It could maybe just be an issue with something nearby causing interference? from Wi-Fi like that LG Display a couple of months ago.

It could literally be anything. Wireless Speakers, Wifi Routers, Cordless Phones, Microwaves, Baby Monitors, Wireless Security Cameras, or any other nearby bluetooth and wireless devices. There's no telling what situations people were playing in. Radio interference can reach critical mass pretty easily in a tech busy living room. I had occasional issues with my Wireless Speakers for my TV when my Wifi was on the wrong channel. I had to turn off autoscan to get it to stop.

I need a Switch therapist. This issue is really killing my excitement. This was going to be my party machine and I was envisioning epic 8 player bomberman matches, 4 player mario kart matches and fun sessions of 1-2 switch and Just Dance. If someone's controller is desyncing constantly that is going to suck all the fun out of the party.

It almost makes me want to cancel my Switch preorder (and all of the friggin controllers I was getting!). I already have a Wii U with 4 wii remotes and 4 pro controllers. Perhaps I should just stick with that as my party machine ... :-(

Someone be my Switch therapist and feed me the koolaid.

We really don't have enough info to conclude one way or the other at this point unfortunately. It isn't happening with every previewer, so isolating the issue is impossible until Nintendo speaks up, if they do. Or until they fix what has gone out there and it is reported as fixed.

It would be a total, utter disaster. Of biblical proportions. You can't release hardware in this day and age with flaky connectivity on one of it's controllers. Speaking as someone who has a Switch preordered.

Fingers crossed this is a software issue which can be patched, because if it's a hardware problem? That's a nightmare scenario, it would say a lot about Nintendo's testing and QC (or lack thereof) as well.

Biblical proportions? Seriously? Were you not around for the RRoD?

Is this what we're looking at? If it is a distance issue regardless of how interference may play at larger distances the end user experience should be okay at launch. You'll just have to move a bit closer or move the dock closer to where you're sitting. Not ideal but manageable. So no spoiled launch really.

Manageable? That would pretty much the worst possible outcome since it's unlikely that it could be fixed with a software update. Not being able to sit further away than 6 feet would be so incredibly ridiculous, it wouldn't even be funny anymore.

I hope this is just affecting a small number of systems. I guess we won't know completely what's going on until this thing is in consumers hands. Crossing my fingers my unit isn't affected.

Any word from Nintendo yet?

That would mean Nintendo is aware of the internet...
They've just shown me they've barely learnt anything since the Wii U. Things I'd imagine Sony/MS RUSHING to clear up, answer questions, Nintendo have stayed silent. Typical Nintendo.

They just need a real shakeup in this area.

I loved many of the exclusives on Wii U, but I've never had a console (or any piece of hardware for that matter) that froze anywhere nearly as often as my two Wii Us did.

The only time my wiiu ever froze was during netflix, cause my kids leave it on all day and night :P
Never had it freeze in the middle of a game before... I think only console I had this problem with was x360

Or maybe they want to provide an accurate, detailed PR statement? It would be stupid to jump the gun and say something right now if they're not ready to give actual info. I think it's pretty safe to say they're scrambling to address the issue internally this very minute.

I question the judgment of any individual who would think buying a dead console for one game is a better purchase than buying a new console with promised future support for the same game.

Now, if you already own a Wii U, then yeah, Zelda makes sense there.
I agree but, if said person could not secure a Switch and wanted to play BotW immediately. I could see doing it.

But this is Nintendo so Nintendo messed up and have failed etc.

It's a terrible problem regardless of which company is behind it if it can't be fixed right away.

So, has a cause been identified? Or is everyone just jumping to a solution that could be wrong?

I'm seeing people state that Nintendo need to do a firmware update or to recall the Switch hardware.

I don't really see how it fixes the problem if people aren't finding the cause of it.

I mean, let's not discount that this could be a big issue. There's a reasonable middle ground between "no big deal" and "OMG this system is fucked"

If it was an "OMG this system is fucked" issue then everyone would be having the problem. We know that's not the case, so the issue likely isn't with the hardware itself and more likely than not environmental. Right now there's way too many variables at play to say what exactly is causing the issue for those that have it.

Yeah, I've had that issue with my XB1 since the day I purchased the system. Really frustrating.

It never happens in the middle of playing though. It only happens every now and then when I try and power up the system with the controller. Then I need to re-sync, and it doesn't sync like it should. It takes multiple tries.

You're not gonna hear much now, they're a bit busy pimping the Switch and Play event in California with John Cena right now.

Is it confirmed that the controllers use bluetooth and not some 2.4ghz frequency?

You might be on to something here

1. Blutooth
2. Small controller with lower tranmission power
3. Struggles with > 6 ft maybe

Could be a design issue but why only the left ?

It's assumed the left is transmitting to the right, which in turns sends everything to the console itself.

It is hard to identify the source of the problem when only a few dozen people have the system.

It's not that hard if you have a few dozen.

I'm just pointing out how stupid it is that people are jumping to conclusions without having identified the cause.

If the problem is something that can be rectified without having to do a firmware update or a hardware recall, then all it will show is that this problem was blown way out of proportion.

Fortunately, even if this is a hardware issue, worse case scenario they only have to replace a Joycon rather than the whole system. Best case scenario it will be fixed in the day one patch.

We are beta testers essentially, hopefully when they knock down the price this holiday they gives us a few freebies like they did with the 3DS

Curious how the problem could be rectified without either of those things. What other solution would there be? People sitting closer to their consoles?

I honestly have to ask the question how many launch Switch buyers haven't already purchased a Wii U, particularly in the context of playing the new Zelda game, which was itself originally announced as a Wii U title. No, I'm not saying the Switch is pointless, but acting like the Switch is the de-facto only place to play it is a weak point.

How many Wii U owners sold the system to help finance a Switch purchase?
