I cringe every time someone calls Eminem or Jessica Simpson an "artist". Of course, they don't actually play anything, so it's hard to justify calling them "musicians" either, but at least that word puts you in the right sector of culture. Eminem is a "rapper" or even "songwriter" (and a pretty good one at that). Simpson is a "singer" or "screamer". I'm pretty sure neither of them is much of a painter.

"recording artist" -- Help me rid America of this phrase!

After thinking about this some more, I'm starting to disagree with myself. I'll still cringe when I hear that word used that way, but that doesn't necessarily point to a larger philosophical truth (which my thinking when I started this thread). If I'm going to say that music is not art (not that I hate music; I'm a musician myself), then I'd also have to say that media like film and games are not art, which seems wrong.

So I'm going to ask the mods to lock this and maybe make me a Junior Member so I can't start new threads for a while, since I can't seem to be doing it impulsively and poorly the past few days.

Or maybe you're just stupid too if you don't understand why this thread is stupid. When you categorize people as something such as "artist" you place those who fit certain criteria (the definition of the word) into the category (in this case the category is artist). Depending on what you select as your criteria, you will have different people fit inside that category, but at the same time the criteria you choose is basically up to personal jurisdiction and thus ultimately meaningless. This thread is like the "SSB - Fighter or not?" thead because its just a bunch of people saying "My definition is right, yours is wrong!"

Art is just a form of expression, be the medium words, paint, or 100 pounds of shit in a barrel. Whether or not it's good art is another issue entirely.

eminem actually creates his music, whether it be writing lyrics, producing the music, creating beats, ect... Jessica simpson, on the other hand, is basically just an instrument. stick her in a studio by herself and she probably wouldn't know wtf to do without having someone there telling her how and what to sing.
