Must watch anime?

Baccano!

As mentioned by several others in the thread already.

Baccano! is a 2007 anime series directed by Takahiro Omori and produced by Brain's Base and Aniplex. The 16 episodes are adapted from the light novels of the same name written by Ryohgo Narita and illustrated by Katsumi Enami. Told in out-of-order sequences, the story spans three consecutive years of Prohibition-era America during which three seemingly unconnected events occur:
two bottles of immortality elixir are passed around Manhattan by gangsters believing it is alcohol, a supposed monster massacres members of two gangs attempting to hijack the transcontinental train Flying Pussyfoot, and a man is tracked down by his sister and a gang
.

First episode is a bit confusing, but keep at it.

Well it doesn't really matter. Funi's dub is pretty good, but you can't go wrong with subs either. Although after a point it's just painful to watch One Piece because the chapter per episode ratio flatlines to a whopping 1 per episode.

The slow pace isn't too painful until you have to wait weekly for it. Fishman Island and Punk Hazard being slow and offensively ugly most of the time doesn't help.

Monster
An incredible 74 episode long story about murder, suspect and run trough Germany to correct the mistake.
This anime has perhaps the best story I have seen in one thus far.

The Twelve Kingdoms
Very good anime where main character ends to an alternative world.

Hunter x Hunter
A splendid fighting/adventure story about young boy in search for his father.

It's so hard to find good places to watch all these. :(

Hulu has a decent amount of anime series available (in english dub and subtitles).

Yeah I tried to watch this a while back and couldn't make it through the first ep. Bummer it's not on Netflix anymore as I wanted to give it another go.

Yeah, the first time I tried watching it I also stopped. But I gave it another try and now it's one of my favorites. :)

4 eps in and Gurren Lagann is godlike. What other mecha animes are best?

Aww man just you wait. Are you watching the English dub? I felt that was very good.

You need to watch Evangelion. Gurren Lagann and Evangelion are the two defining mech animes in the genre, and for completely different reasons.

Yeah I'm doing Eng dub, it's great.

I'll check out Gunbuster!

Great artstyle and one of the best soundtracks you'll ever listen to (Nujabes)

Gundam Mobile Suit 0080: War in the pocket
This isnt' your typical Gundam show. It is much more serious and I guarantuee you, you will cry like a bitch at the end. Only 6 Epsiodes of so its more like a movie.
I recommend everyone to watch this. Very heartbreaking.

Hajime no Ippo
This is an Anime about boxing. Even if you don't like box sports I recommend to give it a try. Very funny and with some of the best characters. If you finished the anime you can go ahead and read the manga.

Fate/Zero is interminably boring for aaaages though.

You need to watch Evangelion. Gurren Lagann and Evangelion are the two defining mech animes in the genre, and for completely different reasons.

I'd label Evangelion as a meta-anime which happens to use mechas to further its theme, but it isn't a true mecha series per se, in my opinion. That's part of what makes it awesome, though.

Is there any Anime that resembles the atmosphere and art-style of the "Beyond" short in the Animatrix? I've been looking for something like that for a while.

Fuck Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Avoid it at all costs and watch the original anime.

As you can see people to this day fight over which one they prefer. Personally I am a Brotherhood fan. Both are worth watching. You just may want to rewind over the 'repeats' of particular episodes at the start before they diverge.

Black Bible.

Actually, Serial Experiments Lain is up your alley. I like High School of the Dead and Corpse Princess. Is This a Zombie was a lot of fan service, but fun. Elfen Lied, super violent...Fruits Basket, super cute w/a pretty deep alter ego.

Fate/Zero

fate-zero-15-3.gif

So good.

This gif is not indicative of the show as a whole. Not that I don't like Fate/Zero, I do, but this kind of action in this gif doesn't occur regularly.

In addition, I wouldn't consider Fate/Zero 'must watch anime'.
