Mutant Mudds 3DS update out (20 new levels)

Beat all the new levels. That turned out not to be as hard as I hoped. Sure I died several times in each stage, but I never got frustrated.

Aaaaaaand we're done here folks.

Victory! (spoiler warning)

I really hope this is referencing MM Deluxe because I don't think I can wait any longer than that for more new stuff

I finished all the CGA levels... it seems sort of like they used up all of their ideas on the first few levels, since all of the later levels felt exactly the same. Jump down spiky corridor, hover over spikes while blasting floating enemy, land on platform while avoiding tiny mudd creature, repeat ad nauseum. The difficulty remained pretty much constant throughout and they starting getting really monotonous towards the end. However, the music in the bonus levels was so freaking badass that I didn't even mind all that much.

Hm, I don't know about that. There was definitely an upward trend in difficulty. I wouldn't say a new idea was introduced in every stage, but there were a few new, tougher things thrown at you as the levels progressed.

The earlier DLC levels were much harder than the latter.

I wouldn't say the later levels were easier in terms of their design, but they may have seemed easier since they repackage the same enemy/obstacle layouts from the earlier levels, so you're more prepared to deal with them.

That's it for sure. Initially it's a mindscrew with timing and avoiding spikes etc...

After the first 6 or so DLC levels, you have adjusted to the difficulty curve and it's a breeze.

I was dying dozens of times at the beginning, then all of a sudden I was doing some of the middle levels on my 1st/2nd try.

The last level itself was quite disappointingly easy.

I agree with this. Once you get used to using all three power-ups at once, your good. After the first eight levels, I kept asking myself, "Are these getting easier?".

Level 12, (I think?) the last sky level is damn tough. I hate the things that shoot projectiles from off screen. So damn cheap.

Haha, found a bug on one of the original ice worlds. Trying the high jump on the right wall near the end results in you clipping through the wall, and then falling to your death behind it. Entertaining.

Progress note: 8 CGA stages finished.

I also found a bug:

You can walk on these spikes without dying. Saved my ass actually. :P

I didn't have MM before the update so I've cleared the entire game in the past four-ish days. Fun game and some of the most masterful level design (at extracting skill from the player) I've seen since Lost Levels. It's not quite as hard, but LL was just unfair at times.

I devoured the shit out of these levels the day they were released on the eShop. Mutant Mudds is pretty much my favorite 3DS game out there, and it's one of the best platformers I've ever played, period. It's really hard for me to describe just how much I love this game and how amazingly nuanced and loving the level design is.

The Grannie levels are all really fun, but I surprisingly found them to be generally easier than the hardest of the regular levels. Even though the levels are designed around Grannie's enhanced abilities, having those abilities still makes things easier overall. This is especially true with the enhanced cannon; it's easy to pick off enemies from very far away so that they're not a problem when the precise platforming comes into play, something Max couldn't do.

Still, no matter how hard they are or aren't, the levels are fantastically fun. Jools Watsham and his team at Renegade Kid are some of the most talented developers in the industry right now. I can't wait for Mutant Mudds HD and Mutant Mudds 2!

EDIT: Can anyone tell me the gist of what Max says once you beat all 20 Grannie levels? I hit the d-pad by accident while on that screen, causing me to skip right past it. :(

I still don't understand how you all think the levels got less challenging as they went on. There is just no way this is true. Wishing I kept a death tally to offer some evidence of my trials, because I most definitely died many more times in the later Grannie stages.

Overall though I would agree that even at their most difficult, they were rather easier than the tougher Max stages. Due to Grannie being kind of naturally overpowered, enemy placement and type no longer posed much of a threat. It was just about navigating the obstacles. Often tricky but rarely daunting.

It's sort of close comparing playing as Max in 5-3 and 5-4, but I think the Grannie stages (with some exceptions, a couple are surprisingly short and thus easy like 2-1) are definitely much harder, even with the powerups taken into account. Nothing says "hard" like being completely surrounded by one-hit-kill spikes at every turn.

It took me three sittings to finish these 20 CGA levels, but I beat the vast majority of them in one sitting.

Some of them took 1 try, some 2, and some 5+ tries. A lot of my mistakes were stupid ones though. If you're good enough to beat the regular levels, you're good enough to beat these bonus ones as well. The same basic skills are tested across them and the challenges aren't extremely varied (though each CGA level uses concepts from the "world" that it's part of, e.g. ice, fireballs, blowing clouds, swinging spikes, etc.). It all comes down to good timing and using each of Grannie's three abilities to its fullest. I didn't notice too much of a difficulty hike; things seemed pretty even from level to level, with some exceptions of course.

Playing as Grannie turns enemies into cake walks. The previously-anger-inducing sword enemies are no match anymore.

After getting caught back up with the game's general mechanics, I was able to blow through most of the bonus content. The new levels were a lot of fun! I'm actually glad they made for a solid challenge and not an overly frustrating one.

Great job, Renegade Kid. This was a great freebie.
