So awhile back my computer got a virus. The "virus" made my computer reboot itself over and over again. It never went to the windows log on screen. And being the idiot that I am I accidentally threw away my back up cd and all the other cds that came w/ the computer because I left them in the box. So now I'm trying to use my mom's dell window cd and the computer cant connect to the internet to register window because(im guessing) it doesnt register the modem driver. I also tried calling the phone number to register but that didnt work out either(stupid automated systems). So what do I need to do to fix it? Is there a way that I could get new cd's from Sony? Btw, my computer is a VAIO. Any help would be appreciated. I don't seem to know very much about computers :(

1. You can't load Dell branded OSs on non-Dell machines

2. Go into safe mode w/ networking, get online (you use a modem? :lol) if you can, and download stinger.exe. Run it.

3. Update your virus definitions (provided you have virus software installed)

1.wrong

2.he can't active his windows xp through the internet because his modem doesn't have drivers

3.I doubt he has such things.

If he can get to the internet now on a different machine I'd suggest he look up the model of his modem and download the drivers from the maker or go to drivers.com then put them on a removable device to transfer them over to the other pc.

after that boot up in safe mode without networking and install the drivers.

Dell basically gives you a stand alone windows xp disc. You can use these discs on any computer. Maybe they didn't a while back? I know they've been doing this for at least 3 years now.

They give you a backup OS disc and the drivers are all on seperate discs.

Thanks. That wasn't the case back in '98-'99 when I was doing the computer thing at work. You get a message during the install saying that the disc is for Dell machines only...
