My invention hit it big so now I'm gonna buy a couple of McMansions

I just purchased some hair catchers for the hostel I work in. I bought them from eBay (4 in total). They were sent from China and cost £3.98 total including postage to the U.K.

Anyway, they arrived today. Not only did they send me 5 instead of 4, they also came with Tubshroom branding on them which I remembered from this thread. I'm guessing this is expected from China but just thought I'd give you a heads up! Just in case you could do something about it, however unlikely.

Found it next to the toilet bowl brushes + plungers at Bed Bath and Beyond.

I think there are two versions of the product as the packaging slightly differs.

Version 1: Packaging shows raindrop at top. Claims 100% non-toxic. Back claims that it also works in a sink with a 1.5" drain. Product is naked and white ziptied to two cut-out holes on the cardboard packaging.

Version 2: Packaging shows a bathtub picture at the top and moves raindrop of packaging #1 to bottom left corner. Product is held in with a clear plastic and a circular cutout.

Quality control is somewhat consistent. Product feels like silicone.

I picked version 1 since I liked that the product felt more rigid. There was some variation between the ones on the shelf. Some felt thicker. Some felt thinner. Wasn't sure if they were the same as I don't have a set of calipers on me.

Very tight fit for installation. I'll see how the product works once I use it more. I wonder how well it collects lint before I start recommending it to other people.

OP can literally go around and say "I invented the Tubshroom" and be celebrated like a hero, soon everyone will have one. Congrats OP!

edit: So weird to refer to the OP as OP instead of his user name.

We got one in our house, but we have this bar that goes across the drain so it can't fit perfectly. If only it was shorter. Been tempted to cut it in half and make it shorter.

Hey Samus, lemme see a pic of your drain, if you don't mind.

Thanks everyone for the praise... always much appreciated. We've been busting our azzes lately just trying to scale as quick as we can. I didn't want to post an update until I had more concrete stuff to say, however. I'm grateful to be able to reveal that we're rolling out in several big Canadian chains this summer and, in the US, we're launching in Lowes, True Value, Menards, CVS, and... Target... very soon. We're having meetings with the big "W" as well.

We had a quick mention on the Today Show last week and we'll be ramping up some more TV commercials soon. Thank you all for your continued support!

I used to buy the cheap metal drain strainers and just toss them when they got nasty because they are hard to clean. I threw my last one away when I saw this thread last year, thinking I was going to buy one of these. Then I never got around to it.

I have to say I've been living without a strainer for months now and my drain hasn't clogged, even though those strainers collected tons of hair when I used them.

I'll take a look. I'm always pulling out the hair catcher in our shower.

I invented something similar, after being inspired by the OP. Now, this isn't finalized, but the working title as of now is the PoopShroom™ The general ideal is the same, but my product is longer and more flexible, and is designed to snake its way into your toilet and down the drain there. We differ from the OP in two ways. The first of which is we have a handy finger ring attached to the top of the PoopShroom™ so it's easy to reach your hand in the toilet and hook your digit into the ring for extraction, and the second way is that the PoopShroom™ catches all of the poop while allowing the water and pee to flow freely around it, not hair, unless the hair is in the poop, in which case we will catch that too. Then, when the PoopShroom™ is full, you simply pull on the finger ring, extract the device, and take it to your tub or shower (where I hope you have a TubShroom!) for easy rinsing.

This is good but based on what I've read in other GAF bathroom threads, many GAFers wouldn't buy this because they already shit in the shower.

you can't put a price on sparks
Just wanted to pop in and say I saw your meme-type-ad on Facebook. Did a good job showing the benefits there

My fiancee recently bought this for our apartment, and I was certain someone from NeoGAF was the creator. Such a brilliant idea.

I love this thing. Our tub used to get clogged about 2x a year because there was no grate or cover on it and we have had no issues since.

When I get my own place I'm getting this shit asap! Growing up with sisters I know the pain of having shower thing clogged with hairs >.>

Here's a quick update for those who asked Q's:

1) As always, thanks to all of NeoGAF for all your continued support and motivation. It means a lot to have such positive reinforcement.

2) Re: the Canadian chains, we'll be rolling out in Canadian Tire (you guessed, TheExodu5), Home Depot, Loblaws, Home Outfitters, and several more in the next few months (!). 10,000+ doors in North America by end of 2017(!)

3) Here's our upgraded SinkShroom Chrome Edition which has several refinements based on customer feedback so it works better and matches the bathroom sink faucets...

4) Spending serious coin on legal actions against a few counterfeiters/knock-offs. It's unfortunate, but a necessary evil, I suppose. Gotta protect that IP!

5) This was the Today Show clip showing the presenter butcher the "TubShroom" name pronunciation hah... https://youtu.be/D7PRAhDvjlU

6) Cow Mengde, we've manufactured in the US, China, and Taiwan. China is the most cost effective, naturally. They're just so incredibly specialized at production.

7) The company mission is to protect every drain in the house. We're working on protecting the kitchen and shower stall drains next. Challenging stuff!

What other improvements have been made to the Sinkshroom? We got ours after falling in love with the Tubshroom (which we found out about after I saw this thread... so hey, good job on that :p), and while it works it's starting to look a little gnarly from the extra variety of crap that goes down a sink drain compared to a bath tub. Any cleaning tips would be appreciated. :)

Congratulations on your success and thank you again for the awesome products!

I like the chrome sink one - might have to pick one up at some point. The shower one has been great, and the various catchers I've used in our kitchen sink all suck.

Cleaning the goddamn thing off after my wife has had a shower, though, is pretty nasty.

Twitter's ever so useful thing of putting older tweets at the top of your page brought to my attention that the SinkShroom was an Amazon Lightning Deal today/yesterday.

9/19/18 Update: I finally got a chance to stick my head out from the sand to say hello and provide an update for those that find this sort of thing interesting. I'm the TubShroom guy (who was previously the MSXbox/TeamXbox guy). Long story short... my partner and I launched a Kickstarter at the end of 2015 for a new kind of drain protector and it's blown up since. We've expanded the line to cover other drains, did a couple more Kickstarters, and have hustled like crazy since to get our product(s) into as many homes as possible. Here's a recent Forbes contributor piece that was written about us and here's a clip of our fourth HSN appearance.

Instead of blowing all our earnings on parties, cheap thrills, and McMansions like we originally planned, we've been reinvesting to grow the company and product line. Success is fleeting, especially if you rest on your laurels. We don't want to end up being one-hit wonders like Los Del Rio. This thread turned into a sort of AMA back when it was started. If the mods don't mind, I can answer some more Q's in here. We're moving into a new warehouse by the end of the year. Fun (and hectic) times! /end yearly update =)

I'm a little confused by the kitchen sink product. A food collection style drain cover is essentially standard on all kitchen sinks, or easily purchased anywhere.

Is there a reason you entered that space specifically?

Not knocking the product, but I'm curious if you really see the potential for success in that product category that's already littered with competition, whereas your shower plug product was essentially a stand-alone.
