My invention hit it big so now I'm gonna buy a couple of McMansions

I've been on NeoGAF before some of you were born but I've mostly just lurked. I've trolled some sony/ms fanboy threads here and there (and got the occasional ban for it) but these last few years I put my head down and became something of a workaholic. I needed to prove to my self that I could put my mind to something and make it into something that can thrive.

Plus, I was getting bored at my profession so I said screw it let's go do something. My long time colleague and friend always bounced ideas off of me, and I him. We're both tinkers. So we collaborated on this bathroom accessory and it turned out really great. I mean, works better than any of the alternatives and wasn't crazy expensive to get into production. Gave some prototypes out to friends and they loved it.

So we put it on kickstarter and worked our butts off to get the word out and the feedback was promising. It did pretty well on there and we knew we had to get some more investors on board to try to make it big while the opportunity presented itself. Fast forward 8 months later and we're on track to break 7-figures in 1st year sales, got large PO's from at least one major retailer, and have been scheduled for an HSN appearance next month. We've been approached by multiple reality entrepreneur shows as well recently and a few large companies for licensing.

It feels sort of surreal at times, but mostly we feel lucky/blessed/fortunate. Now I feel like I just wanna go and try my hand at something else to see if this wasn't just a fluke. I tried coming out with stuff before (different inventions, businesses, etc.) and it was a whole lot of fail. Thankfully I was too stubborn to give up and I learned how powerful the gained experience from your failures can be. So now I'm browsing that McMansions thread in the hopes of buying something that says "I'm living the american dream".

There is a problem with becoming a workaholic, though... it's hard to shut it off. The mind constantly races. When you're doing something non work-related, you always think "I could be doing something more productive right now". It's pretty messed up. I feel most alive when I'm creating something, so I'm probably going to step away from this project sooner than later. Just thought I should share while I had a free moment.

tl;dr came out with an invention for the bathroom, it's selling a lot, and the money may or may not be spent on extravagant things. also, being a workaholic is a trap.

Congrats, it's awesome that you took that risk and worked really hard, and it paid off. It's probably an amazing feeling - I also imagine it's really addictive, which is why you wanna work non stop. Try not to let it make you crazy though, enjoying your hard work means you have to have time not working!

I want one. We have a shower drain cover that attaches over the drain with suckers but it isn't completely reliable. One that goes inside sounds great.

Congrats with your success so far

I hoped it would do well but I didn't realize how passionate people could be about clogged drains until odditymall posted a demonstration video and it got 4+mil views:

that was an insane two weeks for me.

Like every woman I know would buy this. Definitely could see why this is blowing up for you. It's one of those things you see in the aisle and go "Oh. We could use that."

Your design seems so obvious. Like, I'm looking at the product packaging and duh. How did no one think of that before you? Hahaha. Really amazing, congratulations.

not sure If I'm allowed to post.

the moral of the thread is this:

-your life experiences can and should be accumulated and help you to achieve something later in life. take something away from every failure because there is always a reason why it didn't work out that particular time. a failure is only a failure if you learn absolutely nothing from it. Who you are at any given moment is really just all your experiences since the day you were born... and that's a good thing.

-take some risks, but not haphazardly. you live only once. if you fail, learn from it, and you will/can be better for it. I didn't drop everything for any of my past entrepreneurial activities... I made sure I had a safety net and I, thankfully, pulled the plug when I realized it wasn't going to work out. Finally, I got something right. I don't think this would have worked out the way it has if I didn't have all those past experiences under my belt. I truly believe that.

-McMansions are awesome

Let me hold a dollar.

hey if you could invent a hose that latches onto the tub faucet that I can use to clean my dogs, you got yourself a franchise going on. Like why the fk isn't it a thing yet? Can you invent it please? thanks.

That's cool. I know throwing floss strings in a sink or toilet can end up blocking them like cement over time.

So whats the point of this thread?

I think the OP is just sharing their success and trying to tell people that they can do it too if they really try and have a good idea - also, success can be addicting.

Also, what's really the point of any GAF thread?

It really is unreal how the most succesful inventions are those that are so obvious and simple you gotta wonder how nobody though of it before. And simply it's because nobody sat down and thought about it.

Congrats OP, this really is the American dream.

thank you! almost every single post in that facebook thread was stuff like "why didn't I think of this?" "how come no one came out with this before?" and "Barbara, we need this!" that's when we were thinking... maybe this can really go places.

the biggest obstacle so far has been battling counterfeits. Man, some of these counterfeiters are relentless! My partner was really stressed out when those first started popping up... I had to talk him off the ledge a few times haha
