My invention hit it big so now I'm gonna buy a couple of McMansions

Apologies if it's a sentiment that has already been expressed, but I don't know if buying a house (or two) larger than what you actually need is a wise use of money. I feel if your current living situation is working for you, then perhaps your money is better spent invested in other things that could eventually yield even bigger returns for you.

Congratulations on the success, and as someone who just last night fished some hairs out of the bathtub to toss out, I will be looking to see if this is better than what we're doing now.

You made Machi Koro!? I love that game. Own a copy and gave one as a gift as well.

I understood it that his company published it in the west..but I could be wrong :D

I don't make games, well at least not good ones :)

I own a Publisher. Machi Koro is our biggest hit by far.

If you ever need someone speaking 7 languages to translate stuff for your company..,you know where to PM me >_>..

I think to celebrate you should give everyone who posts on this thread £10,000.

After reading the "McMasion" thread, I realized that we may have just bought a McMansion. You know what, screw what other people say. Just go buy a nice big house that you like. Your house is firstly your home, then an investment. Nobody should judge you if you want to live in something that's a little different from other houses on the block. When I first moved to the Boston area, I really dislike the traditional colonial design of most houses here (especially the sidings, just disgusting :( ). I'm glad that we can find something that is not a traditional bore-fest of a typical New England house.

Congrats, OP! Great to see someone that done made it.

Out of curiosity (and don't answer this if you don't want to), how old are you? I'm doing pretty darn generally paying the bills and saving for college and retirement and all that fun stuff in life, but in my mid-30's, I'm starting to look for more, if you know what I mean.

How long, would you say, was your journey into entrepreneur territory? What, if anything, did you commit to and stick with giving up in order to make the change?

Congrats again!

Dont let those delusional fools discourage you.

It is the equivilant of saying "sharp knees, would not bang".

That is correct. The designer is Masao Suganuma. We imported it for Enlgish language rights.

Your invention seems very useful and awesome. Congrats. On a side note, what did you get your higher education degrees in?

I just this past weekend cleaned the loose hairs out of my shower drain, so I got excited when I read the pitch and thought this would be a big help next time. Unfortunately my shower's drain is just a flat pattern of cross-hatch holes flush with the floor so I can't use it. :(

Well done OP. Gotta say I've always been a big fan of your UN / tag combo. Beyond that .. It's great to hear about your success, congratulations.

Are you ready for when the Chinese dollar store knock-offs appear?

they're already here :(

I come up with a lot of ideas myself. how did you go about making prototypes, funding said R&D, and gaining investors? because I really want to work for myself and get one of my ideas actually out to market.

Thanks

hey! Prototypes really depend on the type of product. If it's something like TubShroom, then you could make something yourself out of raw materials after you draw it out on paper. Once you test the different shapes and designs to see what works best, then you can hire a CAD designer (this costs money, of course) to bring your design to 3d life, so to speak. Then you could possibly get it 3d printed in a bunch of different places. That's what we did with TubShroom. The raw prototype with clay and plastics worked well and then the 3d printed prototype worked even better. That's when we locked down the design after some minor tweaks, worked on the intellectual property stuff, and then priced around with a couple of manufacturers. We had to save up ourselves and use our own money to do these initial phases of work. It's mostly time, though. Family and friends are usually a good place to start for investment after you have the prototype (or even before, possibly) and then whatever you raise might be enough to get you all the way through the Kickstarter "testing" phase. From there, you'll have a better idea of whether it's a winner or not. If it is, then often times investors or large companies will reach out to you or you could shop it around yourself. Again, google is your friend every step of the way. There's tons of stuff written about each and every step.

Don't rush anything or you're liable to make mistakes you'll later regret. Not everyone will make it in this field, but if you're passionate about your idea (and realistic!) then I say it's worth saving up for and trying, if you're able. I don't want to make it sound easy because it's challenging for sure. If you find the love in it, though, that should be enough motivation to keep you going, especially if you accept the fact that you can't really fail because, at worst, you'll come away with valuable experience and you won't be left asking yourself "what if?".

Your invention seems very useful and awesome. Congrats. On a side note, what did you get your higher education degrees in?

Business Management, International Business. Worked a bunch. Then Law School at age 28. I'm 35 now. I wouldn't have been able to do this 10, 5, or even 3 years ago. Needed every ounce of that life experience.

i have a piece i would like to get kickstarted. any ideas? did you do this strictly word of mouth or did you look for investors locally?

Kickstarter is a great way to "test" the market and get validity to your product that it's worth investing in. However, Kickstarter takes a lot of work before launch and after launch because there's lots of media/copy to get ready and also after launch there's the efforts to spread the word.Lots of hustle is required and there's no guarantee of success but if you believe in your idea, it's is a worthwhile endeavor to go through to see if the market will believe in it. And most successful kickstarter campaigns have the help of PR firms who take a percentage of the proceeds. That's OK... as long as your margins allow for it. Actually, it's a must and you should build it into your pricing on Kickstarter.

The PR firms work in tandem with your own hustle to get the word out to the press, bloggers, etc. and they combine that with paid click advertising (mainly on facebook) to drive traffic to your KS listing. If your kickstarter listing converts traffic to pledges at a good rate, then they can keep doing it and it has a snow ball effect. That's really what will tell you whether your product is a winner or not. If, after all those efforts, the KS isn't a real success, then it's probably best to move on to something else. If it takes off, however, then at that point you can decide whether to bring on more investors and you can approach family (like I did) or investment firms and you have the successful proof of kickstarter as all you'll need to get some investment, in most cases.

3. Throw Gaf a raffle or something.

going to randomly pick two posters to send free units to as long as they sign an agreement to shill for me

Congrats, OP! Great to see someone that done made it.

Congrats again!

Thanks! 35. I was fortunate enough to have a safety net if this didn't work out. I realize most people don't and many others aren't willing to risk the level they've reached to try something new. It's not easy. Thankfully, in cases like this, you can sacrifice your nights and weekends a bit to get through the initial phases to see if you got something worthwhile or not. For more complicated inventions... it's harder to do it on a shoestring budget... you'd have to shop it out to investors or licensees.

Congrats on your success!

Have you considered something that could go over nontraditional drains? Product looks nice but a lot of newer homes have nontraditional drains.

Thanks! Yes, but there's other products that do pretty well covering the non-traditional market. Gotta stick to our core competencies for now!

If you can't think of things to do w/ the money, don't forget philanthropy -- had a step uncle who did meals on wheels every week and left multiple million dollar donations for nonprofits upon his passing.

That's a wise man. I don't know why people hoard to be honest... you can't take any of it with you.

OP Congrats on making a product that actually works/Affordable, would be cool if you can one day make a thread on how to make a product. People have ideas but have no clue on how to do anything else

I'll try to get permission from the mods before my next kickstarter. I'd like that. This place is full of great minds & great people to coordinate with.

@op Thanks for the answers!
How did you manage to get 4 mil views on the facebook video? And can I have a link?

Link. Odditymall has 100k followers. They posted a demo video and it resonated with their audience so much (better than anything else in their history) that people just kept sharing it. That monday morning I woke up and we had literally hundreds of orders coming in daily. It was insane and fun at the same time.

OP I am a bald man who saves his head in the shower, and I know all that hair from my head, even though very short, is building up in my drain probably.

So will these even catch very short "beard / head hairs?"

Thanks! Yes, it will work as long as you have a tub drain (not a stand up shower stall drain which is a bigger-sized drain). You have to clean it out after every use, though.

Missed opportunity to make the top look like the GAF logo, you were halfway there, just needed the gray :p

If anyone has the l33t gif skills to make it a reality, that would be cool!

I was on teamxbox pre-merge. Good days.

That UNC guy was a character. Interesting though.

TeamXbox reunion! Dad, Dopeyfish, all representing =)

Dunno where this thread has going since it started, but congrats on your success, OP. That product seems so fucking obvious, which is maybe the beauty of it. I want one >_>

I do hope you're able to turn off the "workaholic" thing, but since I'm always working on projects, I imagine it's impossible.

He didn't make it to retail before going on there though.

I believe that was a rerun you guys were watching :) If I recall, he didn't get a deal. It's a neat idea but it's retail potential is hampered by the fact that its pretty complicated for the average user who generally wants something easy to use.

Going on shark tank without any sales and without distribution ready by the time it airs is highly risky because you either get a lopsided deal or your publicity could be wasted if there's nothing to buy. Drain Strain still has opportunities in hotels and on the commercial side and if he can convince manufacturers to incorporate the tech into future products. Like most things, it's going to take lots of hustle!

edit: our upcoming competing product SinkShroom is more tailored for retail, for example.

Yeah, it was on CNBC from sometime in 2015. He did get a deal with Robert, but I believe it was contingent on approaching plumbing manufacturers. None of the Sharks believed it could work in retail.

About the bolded: since I work in the naming business, I'd like to ask you:
- How did you go about naming your product "TubShroom"? Did you just brainstorm internally? Or did you have a budget for it and contracted a company?
- How did you go about registering the trademark? I just did a quick check and your trademark has an extremely short goods and services description. Not saying this is good or bad, but I'm just wondering. In my experience, entrepreneurs with little knowledge of these things just ask for the whole class to be registered, which is ridiculous. At least you probably didn't have to face many legal issues with third parties (in fact, I'm guessing everything went smoothly).

Obviously if you don't want to share that info you don't have to, or you can shoot me a PM. Again, I'm just curious.

Congrats op! keep the nose to the grindstone and youll keep soaring

I am wondering how you guys RnD'd the design. Did you guys have an engineering backround to know the perfect way for water to flow through and strain the bits? Or were you just throwing designs at the wall...testing them in clear containers and just seeing what stuck the most, then refine from there? Dont take this wrong but the design appears so simple that it doesnt seem THAT ground breaking or revolutionary from an engineering perspective. So i just want to know if There is legit thought out science behind it or you just "stumbled" and kept working on variations and tweaking until it satisfied your numbers

Im just curious thats all

Congrats again! Ill prob buy one at BB&B one day

Seriously want to congratulate you on your success!

My father gave me one of your products recently and little do I know it was made by a Gaffer. He's a plumber and has been demonstrating your product to a lot of his customers. They are so useful he had to resort to telling his customers to buy it online since he couldn't keep enough of them on him.

So in short thank you for less clogged sinks!

As for what you should do with your success and your future. I am a strong believer in you making your own destiny. Try new things and invent or take some time off. If you want to continue on your success be humble and remember your past failings. That should keep you grounded and give you a strong foundation going forward.

how rich did you get from this? I have no frame of reference for money once it passes like... what I get a month.

Also, super great idea, but this seems to be american related right? every single plug I've ever seen in my life (NZ and the netherlands) always has a metal grate about 1 cm inside the plug hole.

The only thing we have to deal with is basically pulling disgusting hair directly off that thing.

Are american plug holes just bottomless pits directly into hell with no protection?! how many wedding rings are lost per year?!

Thanks! Actually, drain sizes world wide are pretty standard, thankfully, so it works well in most countries that we've gotten into. The problem is counterfeiters have been pushing hard in international markets because we have yet to build strong deterrents against them in some parts since we started out only a little while ago. They killed a couple of potentially lucrative deals for us, which really sucks.

Kind of weird since those existed here in the east for a long time.

Is that... sarcasm I detect? Please show me =)

Thank you and tell your dad thank you as well! We met a lot of plumbers or plumber suppliers at a trade show and most of them were pretty excited about the product and wanted to try it out. Thanks for the sound advice. I'm going to keep trying new things. I don't think many of us realize how much of an impact a frequented message board like NeoGAF can have on us. Definitely learned a lot from here.

No engineering backgrounds but we're both pretty good at problem solving. My partner actually built some nifty little inventions growing up so he's always had it in him. We complement each other well. We tested a lot in actual tub drains. We wanted to make sure water flow wasn't hampered (although really high pressure heads sometimes give our earlier units a bit of trouble but recent tweaks have smoothed most of those issues out) and we obviously wanted to prevent hair from getting through. When you study the movement of water and what it's trying to do in those types of spaces and factor that in every step of the way, it makes it easier to work through it. The hair getting collected on the bottom lip worked as we imagined and the dimensions of all the parts were tweaked several times until we were totally satisfied with the results.

The ideal shape ended up looking like a Mushroom so it sort of worked itself out. TubShroom isn't as smooth sounding as Mushroom because of the transition from the "b" to the "sh" but it felt clever and "right". No focus testing was done on the name due to the early budget. For the trademark, we researched some best practices and just tried to follow some of that advice. Everything went smoothly, thankfully. The trademark is an absolute must for any product you're pursuing. It's been a life saver against counterfeiters much of the time. That's one area not to skimp. In fact, I would recommend grabbing the US and China trademarks as some of the first steps for any product launch. The China trademark will come in handy later when the battles against counterfeiters begin.
