Try this to reset it, assuming you don't have HOLD turned on:
1. Remove any headphones or accessories from the headphone jack
2. Make sure it's not connected to a dock or dock connector or computer
3. Turn HOLD on and then off again
4. Place the iPod on a flat surface
5. With the index finger of each hand, press and hold MENU and PLAY/PAUSE for at least 10 seconds, making sure your fingers & hands don't touch each other
The iPod should now reset itself. If it doesn't, there's a good chance it's a hard disk drive problem. I just went through the same exact thing with my nearly 3 year old 30GB 3rd gen iPod.
Tried with hold both on and off, 20+ seconds and nothing
Fuck this sucks, I had important things on it and I don't have them on my PC or anywhere else. It's a 20 gigs 4th iPod I bought last september :\
Fuck I'm pissed right now.

That's my plan but there's a problem. I need to check if the company which imports them will do it for me or if I'll have to get my brother to do it (which will take a month and a half, just making the iPod a year old so he'll have to hurry :\)
