My journey through Star Trek for the first time

I don't get it. For years people said to skip DS9's first two seasons. That it was slow and dull. But I've been watching for hours, straight marathoning, unable to not want to watch the next episode and I'm on season 1.

This is much better than TNG season 1 and the majority of 2 as well. The dialogue is much less awkward and more natural. It's also more insightful ("I want you to try to be more comfortable with your discomfort") or comedic without coming off as cheesy ("You've never coupled?" "...Klingon opera..."). You get to see cultures interact in DS9, and that's what Trek is all about. The actors are also showing more chemistry than anyone ever had in TNG, which always felt forced. And this is the first season. I can only imagine how good this gets later on.

Slow doesn't necessarily mean bad so long as there's worthwhile content to make the journey worth experiencing, and I can tell already that I am in for a ride with DS9.
Heh. Reading the OP all I could think was, I bet this guy loves DS9. I found DS9 far too soap opera-y to me. To much time spent on drama and characters, none of which I liked or cared about.

House of Quark is one of my Guilty Pleasure episodes. Doesn't hurt that Grilka is by far the best (and certainly the funniest) female Klingon in all of Trek.

My big problem with the ep is that it attempts to "humanize" the borg. Thus they go from a mysterious, scary, dangerous threat that cannot be reasoned with to just another less-threatening alien faction. I also hate the part in the episode where they say that Hugh could be sent back as a weapon, and of course Picard refuses to do so, instead sending him back hoping that a shred of humanity went back with him to "infect' the others. I find that very lame. For me that ep basically removed the "teeth" from the Borg threat and from then on when they showed up in the shows, I no longer had that "Oh shit!" fear reaction. Descent only cemented that feeling. First Contact was the only Borg-related thing they did after "I Borg" that I enjoyed because they were back to being somewhat scary. Even then, though I liked Alice Krige's acting, I thought the very human-like, emotional Borg Queen was a betrayal of the very concept of the Borg that I enjoyed in the earlier TNG episodes.

Not to sound snarky or anything but by this logic I kind of feel like you should hate Best of Both Worlds because it too kind of humanizes the Borg to a degree by establishing that a person can go from a human to Borg back to human again. I Borg only humanizes them in the sense that it continues the idea that a person can regain their individuality again once separated from the collective (see: Locutus).

Well... I have finished all of TNG, all of DS9, and I'm now about to finish Enterprise. I just have Voyager now. There's that anticipation of knowing you're about to complete a body of works you enjoy soon. It's a mixture of exhalation and depression lol.

3.05 - Second Skin

Mind fuck episode but a good one. I wish we could go more into Cardassian culture beyond "they tortured people and occupied Bajora." Kira always shines on her episodes. Love her.

3.06 - The Abandoned

I love Odo and Kira's relationship. Probably one of the more earnest and sweetest relationships in all of Trek. Really good episode, and a great taste of the Jem'Hadar. I can't wait to see Jem'hadar vs Klingon's. Even when it tries to humanize the Dominion and develop them, Changeling's having Jem'Hadar addicted to drugs as a form of mind control is...twisted and fucked up. The Dominion is fascinating.

3.07 - Civil Defense

This episode! Aahahahahahahahaha it just gets crazier and crazier. Probably the best "the ship is in trouble and we'll all die if we don't hurry!" type Trek episode I've ever seen. Holy shit. Ahahahahaha.

hey Cindi, are you watching the Trek movies as well?

I've already seen all of them. 6 is the best one. I love all of them.

Just wait until plain, simple Garak gets more screentime ;)

Odo is adorable though.

I think it's time to do a DS9 character tier from my current watchings:

S:

Odo
Kira
O'Brien

A:

Sisko
Jake
Garak
Quark
Dukat

B:

Nog
Keiko

C:

Rom

D:

Dax
Bashir

It's not that Dax and Bashir are bad characters. They're just boring as all fuck compared to everyone else. Mr. "I'm a Doctor and I like pussy!" and Ms. "I have an alien symbiosis inside me. That makes me interesting? Right? RIGHT?!?!?!?!" They feel like they were written for TNG. Snoresville. To be honest, Bashir would be a great fit for TNG.

Civil Defense is fantastic. The way Dukat gets slapped down is hilarious.

Replicator. One cup of tea.

Have no clue how you're able to watch that much Trek in such a short time span.

Bashir gets better over time, especially as his friendships with O'Brien and Garak are further explored. Dax, on the other hand, is probably the weakest link of the main cast.

Dax and Bashir are kind of underdeveloped for the first few seasons and real boring for the most part until later when they have things to do. Quark got more screen time then those 2 combined for the first 3 seasons probably.

Kira, Sisko and Odo feel like they got the most attention from day 1 and thats ok because those 3 characters and all 3 actors are great. Everyone else got their days in the spotlight much later.

I'm rewatching the first two seasons of Enterprise for the first time since it originally aired right now and I'm actually kinda enjoying it.
I' always avoided watching them again because I remember hating them back then, but it's not so bad.. or well some episodes are.
I'd definitely place it above above anything Voyager related at least. Season 3 and 4 are still a lot better though.

Bashir gets pretty good in the later seasons and
Odo and Kira
both drop off in my opinion.
Odo
in particular just runs out of story at the end and just sort of hangs around in my opinion.

Kira's
best ever ep is right near the end of the final season though
(Tacking into the Wind).

Oh yeah, good point. I forgot about that. It's also worth noting the obvious, that
Sisko
goes god-tier in the later seasons

Enterprise is easily better than Voyager. Seasons 3 and 4 of Enterprise are better than anything Voyager managed to put out. I'd also rank Enterprise above TOS but that's purely because I just have a really hard time watching TOS.

I've never been able to get into TOS much either. It has some interesting ideas and I like the main cast a lot but I usually end op rolling my eyes during most of its episodes.
I mostly just appreciate it for being the first and I do really like the TOS movies.

It still pains that they haven't made any DS9 or Enterprise movies.

I like DS9's cast the most. I remember not really being a fan of Keira the first time I watched the first couple of episodes but she's really grown on me. Sisko, O'Brein and Odo are great all the way through.

The only main characters from any of the shows I've never really cared about are Kes, Chakotay (I really wanted to like him) Neelix, Tuvok, Tom Paris, Neelix, Tom, Kim (so basically most of Voyager) and Deanna. Everyone else is at least alright with a couple of decent episodes that focus on them.

Season 3 is so far the weakest season of DS9.

How far into the season are you at this point? The season closes relatively strong, but the word "relatively" is key. It's not like Season 2 where the last third of the season consists entirely of good-to-great episodes.

Overall I think I like Season 3 better than Season 1 but to me it's still a significant drop from Season 2. The good news is that Season 4 is quite a bit better.

My GF has been showing me DS9 for the first time. We just saw the one where Odo and Quark are stuck on that cold planet together. Overall the series has been really good so far.

I definitely think it's worse than 2 so far. I'm on like episode 14.

DS9 solidified itself as an amazing show for me with the upcoming episode for you, 'Improbable Cause'. Mind you, I hadn't watched S1 or S2 at that point, and only a few episodes of S3 -- particularly, 'Defiant' with 'Riker'. The way 'Improbable Cause' tied in to 'Defiant' while also being just an awesome episode made me realize... this is a show I need to be watching.

Wow... that was 21 years ago. DS9 is still my favorite TV show of all time.

For sure. Season 4 is comparable in quality to Season 2 though.

Improbable Cause/The Die is Cast is quite clearly the highlight of Season 3. As you said, it also ties in nicely to Defiant. It also begins what I'd consider a strong closing stretch to the season.
