My journey through Star Trek for the first time

Paradise - I thought it'd bring a nuanced take on technology vs living naturally. Instead it becomes one sided pretty quickly. Still a good episode. When Sisqo slammed the leaders book my body quivered. What a man~ *bites lip*

I don't like when Avery Brooks goes over the top sometimes, but he and Picard both have a very good "Bitch better listen to me" set of mannerisms when they want to.

"Paradise" is pretty divisive. I personally find the episode interesting but I can understand if others can't get on board with the guest actress (who does have a very "breathy" way of delivering her lines).

Paradise had larger potential. If it showed the merits of both sides it'd be worth discussing more.

It's hot when Avery does it.

yeah, O'Brien is definitely the boss in DS9. Serie has the good habit of taking underdeveloped, unexciting characters like him and Worf and turn them into complete awesome with great storylines and actual character development

Dax could have been so much better a character given what she was, but I think she was still a fine character. Just not a standout like just about everyone else.

TNG worf will seem very one dimensional compared to DS9 worf.

I can't think of any character in TNG that's actually three dimensional to be fair. And DS9 is a more character-based show. If Troi, Geordi, Riker, or Barbara were on DS9 they'd find a way to make them more interesting too. So DS9 Worf being more interesting isn't that much of a surprise. In TNG he's still a stand out character with some of the best episodes. Episodes that were written by DS9 alumni. If anything, I find Worf's character to be one of the few hints at the future trajectory with DS9 given the writers that helmed a lot of Klingon episodes in TNG.

Deep Space Nine managed to create multiple compelling Ferengi characters. For that fucking Gandalf tier of wizardry alone, it deserves accolades.

Heartwarming episode. The continuing development of Odo and his larger understanding of what he calls "humanoid" trivialities is touching and alluring. Dax and Odo great chemistry in this episode, and Odo's relationship with Taya is cute and touching. The ending made me cry. Odo is Data done right.

Playing God

With this episode title, I figured it would have been a lot more interesting than it was. Although the premise is interesting, there's a lot here that takes too long to get to, and when it does, it's glossed over within mere minutes despite the tense situation. Still, it has some good in it, mostly in Dax's interaction with her Trill friend. It gives great insight in Jazdia's and Curzon's history, while fitting in the title. But there's not enough meat here despite a good premise. Probably the weakest episode in the series so far.

DS9 is definitely my favourite Star Trek show.
It's not just good trek but it's damn good TV on its own. Seasons 4 to 7 are amazing and actually get pretty close in quallity to Babylon 5 seasons 2,3 and 4 at times which I consider to be the best science fiction ever aired.

I'm not sure that it's possible to walk out of DS9 a fan and dislike any of the characters besides Dax honestly.

People dislike Dax? I remember Keira being the one I had the hardest time warming up to when I was going through this show for the first time. Julian was kinda annoying during season one as well.

Also, I recently found out the actress playing Winn was also Nurse Gretchen in One Flew Over
ratched_zps8b084dba.jpg

That really blew my mind. She has an amazing bitch face.

Dislike might be a strong term, but she's incredibly boring and never grows or does anything. Kira wasn't likeable to begin with but she has growth, an arc, and good character episodes.

Just like you rarely 'like' a villain but you like that they're in the show, the show could've been just fine without Dax in it at all.

yes, and Vedek Bareil is played by Ralph Fiennes
not true

Dax seems to be hated by women I know, not sure why; my two exes, sister, mum and current fiancee all said/say she's boring, useless and arrogant. I never understood why, I find her rather strong willed, competent, bold and of couse damn beautiful to boot

them sexual innuendos "How about this? We work for a few more hours, and then we go back to your room and count each other's spots"

What a coincidence, I started watching TNG a few months ago and am currently halfway through S7.
I too didn't really grew up with it, I would sometimes try to watch it when my older brother was watching it on TV when I was about 8-9 years old but didn't remember much.

Have really been enjoying it though, and think it's quite a shame how Star Trek has this "for nerds only" image because some(I'd say most) of the stories and acting are really good.

I will probably be watching DS9 after finishing TNG as well.

Armageddon Game - fuck yes, I thought Odo was my fave but O'BRIEN.

BASHIR/CHIEF BUDDY ADVENTURE

KEIKO AND CHIEF FOR BEST TREK COUPLE

Everything in this post.

Keiko and O'brain have the most realistic relationship in the entirety of Star trek. And O'Brian and Bahir the best bro-mance.

I'm always wary of episodes that deal too heavily with holograms, but Shadowplay works nicely for me as an Odo vehicle. Playing God is one of those episodes that's just "there" for me. I can remember the basic outline but while there's nothing too bad in it there's also nothing to really hold my interest.

I don't think Dax was a bad character exactly but in a show with so many standouts she's definitely among the major characters I find least interesting.

Not sure how Kira is dislikable?

I don't really think Kira is actually supposed to be liked in the same way other characters are supposed to be liked. She is strong willed, often outright stubborn, uncharacteralistically pragmatic for a Star Trek show and devout to the extreme while the show outright tells you, that her faith is complete nonsense.

That makes her a much better character than a lot of people give her credit for, but in a Star Trek show she seems jarring. And they definitely wrote her this way on purpose.

She's supposed to stand a contrast between Sisko and the federation. Like I said above, DS9 is the biggest test that of Federation values because it places so many different characters with completely different agendas into the mix. I welcome her and the drama she adds. Much better than Riker beaming at Picard like his fart smells like roses.

I liked Kira a lot. She was the strong female character that Janeway failed to be. The development with her and Sisko learning to trust each other and work together is also really well done.

Thank goodness they got rid of that Episode 1 Hairstyle immediately though.

Kira looks much better with the short hair.

Ew.

At least make her look like how she did in Necessary Evil.

I guess that's kinda true. I mostly like her for her interactions with the rest of the crew and not her for herself.. if that makes sense.
Season 7 spoiler:
I liked Ezri Dax a lot more. Not only did I prefer de Boer as an actress but I liked how different she was. Jadzia was confident whereas Ezri was really confused and full of self doubt due to not having recieved any preperation before being joined and such. She was still Dax in a lot of ways but she was also completely different in some ways.

Oh man what a ride. I just finished (Hadn't even realized) watching Star Trek TNG. There were many good and many bad episodes but I loved it all. It was such a progressive show in so many ways. Thank the stars I have Deep Space nine to fill this massive void that just expanded in my heart after hitting next and finding a behind the scenes as the epilogue. When I was young my dad would watch it occasionally but I was far too young for anything to sit. Now at 24 I'm really just overjoyed to have been able to watch it as I did. It's a bittersweet ending to a great journey.

I wonder what the alternate universe version of DS9 would have been like with Ro Laren. They tried to write her in to the "season 8" novels but that was just some fannish retconning.

Indeed, I don't like Kira but that doesn't mean she's not a great character. The show really pushes your boundaries and what you think about certain characters especially Kira who was a self-avowed terrorist. I think the episode "The Darkness and the Light," kind of solidified for me what I thought of Kira.

Worse.

Kira is my favorite woman in all of Trek. Bashir was a lucky guy.

She gets better right? I'm a few episodes in and I already have a strong dislike growing for her, where as I loved Ro. There's a difference between strong willed and insufferable. Maybe it's just over the top right now to establish her character though.

She pulled a pretty boss move in episode 4. She's earning my respect slowly.

I think she's a character that you appreciate more on re-watches.

She's intentionally bitchy. She gets better.

How is Kira insufferable?

Well she literally goes over her commanders head to declare how mistaken her superior is before she's even gathered the proper information in episode 3. She's also constantly causing confrontations with people. Her anger to a degree is justified given the Bajoran past, but I feel like she's someone who is constantly at odds with the rationality of Star Fleet. This makes her an interesting character but she often acts belligerently where logic needs prevail.

I just started watching though, I have a feeling her character will be interesting to watch and will change over time.

I can see Kira being a bit insufferable, but she's of course a patriot, seen many atrocities and living on a Cardassian space station is already a bit taxing for her, just to make an example

I just finished episode 18 of DS9. This is probably my favourite episode so far.

can't remember, but it must be Duet right?

because Duet is one of the best ST episodes ever. And in season one nonethless!

I also recently decide to watching DS9 a few months ago. I'm at the start of Season 7 right now.

Some random thoughts.

1. A lot of talk about "Paradise." This episode is prob the starting point of when DS9 starts to "get good," in general (a few gems in S1 aside)

2. Compared to TNG, there's a lack of techno-babble / techno-solutions to a lot of problems with DS9. Talk is relatively simple, as are solutions. For those expecting some inverse/modulated tachyon/neutrino/graviton pulse/beam to solve every danger, those people will be let down.

3. They really overdo 'time travel.' There's at least 10 episodes throughout the 7 seasons where someone, somewhere, goes back in time. After the 3rd such episode, this theme gets extremely lame.

4. Someone apparently sends the producers a memo that the show has a stale non-human element to it during season 5 or so, and all of sudden there's like 3+ love relationships going on.

5. The stars of the show are Du'cat and Garak. Any episode with them tends to be above average.

6. Not really sure what to make of Morn. It's as if this character is part of a running joke. They never show him doing anything, but everyone tells a story about him. He's such a pure violation of 'SHOW your audience, don't TELL your audience' that I can only really understand him as a joke. But it's not that funny. He finally gets an episode about him in Season 6, but whatever happens in the episode does not really justify the 5 season buildup to it.

7. There's considerable filler in DS9. Usually after a major set of events, you'll have like 5-7 episodes of character development, with each episode focused on one character. The thing is it's usually not how they have recently changed, but more back story as to flesh them out further. The former would have been more interesting.

What is there not to get with Morn? The joke is obvious. He's a riff on Norm from cheers (that part isn't actually important, but it's where his name comes from), and he sits at the bar and never talks, but the characters claim he never shuts up. There's no 'showing' to be done - if they showed him talking it wouldn't actually be a running joke at all. There's no 'buildup' to an episode, that episode was just a pitch they got that they liked, and they got LOTS of morn pitches but never used them because the entire point of his character was to be just a constant bar presence without doing/saying anything.

Do they? I don't remember DS9 being particularly bogged down with Time Travel episodes.

They establish in episode 1 that there's tension between Kira and Sisko. It wouldn't be realistic if Kira didn't go behind him. Her resolve is also logical and makes sense within her own frame work

Homage to another sitcom is some shitty storytelling imo. I am/was expecting something a lil more... transcendant... with him. Kinda like Kosh from B5, no one really knows who/what he is or does, but when the time is right, ends up being a major player in some way to the grand story arc.

Do they? I don't remember DS9 being particularly bogged down with Time Travel episodes.

Let me clarify I guess. There's direct time travel, and then stories with secondary time anomalies. I would consider the following additional 'offenders,' as contributing in some way to the bog down. Individually they are ok episodes, I guess it's just these + the alternate dimension + filler dragged some seasons out for me.

Meridian
Visionary
The Sound of Her Voice
The Visitor
Wrongs Darker than Death or Night
Time's Orphan
