Notice: I dont use xdcc warez bots or stuff like that, so there's no "idle while waiting for the tranfert to start" for 3 days. I leave my client connected overnight once in a while.

But when my home, mirc is always maximised, and i always pop and open the screen once in a while to see whats going on.

I'm addicted to irc. Thanks to irc, i met friends, foes, chicks, contacts, got jobs, learned about awesome music and movies, talked with people across the world, exchange ideas and learned about human nature. It changed my life (in some really good ways, and some very bad ways)

I used to chat on the IGN chatrooms via MIRC (when I was a "gamer") and that was about it.

Now, I only use it to download stuff.

I don't think it's THAT big of a deal. It's been about 9.5 months there, so approximating a number of days and averaging it out, that's... about 7 hours a day. Not a big deal if he's got an always-on connection and can just leave the program sitting there. A lot different to leave an IRC window open and check frequently than to be actively playing an online FPS.

It says total time, so not necessarily one long session.

I've not been big on IRC for a while... but 5-8 years ago I was probably on nearly as much as your numbers here indicate (a little less due to the whole dial-up thing). Mainly hung around a very few channels, but some of those people I still keep in touch with. I never would have guessed, for instance, I'd follow a guy from being a depressed Star Wars fan hyped up for Episode 1, through high school, into marriage and fatherhood.

I use irc daily, but only as a way to talk with my gf.

Sure there are more than a few rooms I could hang out in, but I don't see the point. At least on message boards I get told how much of an idiot I am in small doses with plenty of time between each barb. irc rooms just gives me the same results in a more rapid fashion.

Other people in the channel I used to hang out would keep lists of short quotes/anecdotes from in the channel. Awesome fun to look back on now, though many are nowhere near as funny without the context and "being there".
