I smoked from ages 20 to almost 28 I was a pack and half to 2 a day smoker. I tried to vape but it just wasn't the same. Then I got on medicaid and got back on depression meds one being Wellbutrin which also is prescribed as a smoking cessation drug. That along with the patches I have been smoke free for almost a year and a half now and no urge to go back.

Best of luck to you and your wife I hope you both find ways to quit.

Ive been smoked free for 5yr..Started smoking when I was in high school til 32yr old....Quit pretty much cold turkey.....Started with nicotine patch for like a day or two....Then just said fuck it and went with nothing ever since...

good luck op. I stopped for ab 6 months last year, and started again during the summer. I'm doing the same, this year, gonna stop all forms of smoking, but this time when I go back, I plan to vape.

Cold turkey.

Smoked for over 15 years. Quit many times. I quit cigs almost three years ago by using ecigs and then weaned myself down to 0mg and quit those a year ago.

I miss cigarettes every day. They were such a huge part of my life and tied to so many great memories. I did slip during the summer, but I tried to stick to cigars instead and I found going cold turkey at the end of the summer was much easier than the previous times I had quit. The itching, gnawing, and burning cravings lasted only a few days rather than several weeks.

The physical cravings aren't the tough part though, it's the letting go of a constant companion, something that kept you relaxed and accompanied you in so many things. From eating and drinking to driving and even just relaxing and listening to music. I miss it, I know it's terrible for me, I know how shitty I felt in the mornings, I know I'm healthier now. But I really miss it and suspect I always will.

It gets easier, I think a lot of people go into quitting thinking they will be out of the habit within a year. No, that's not the case. It took me about 3 years before I didn't think about having one when I was at a bar, and 5 years to not think about having one when a friend I used to smoke with offered me one.

It's not just the nicotine that's addictive , it's the social habits that are formed and groomed towards cigarettes. Those take a long time to get over.

I'm about 8 years out and I can safely say that I have no desire to smoke at all. The thought actually disgusts me now, like most non smokers. My Wife and I both smoked for 10 years before that. It's hard for me to even believe I smoked for that long.

Oh, thanks,.. I forgot.. She has tried e-cigs and "doesn't like it".
that says to me "she doesnt like the set up/flavor she tried". i quit cold turkey for a good 3 years until i started to get to the end of my school program. started smoking again for a few months and its absolutely disgusting. took up vaping and have been off of cigs for another 3 years and counting. i hate to use the term, but fuck all the vaping haters. it works. starter kits have come a long way and theres definitely something out there for everyone. if you seriously want to consider giving it a try, head over to the Official E-Cig Thread for any questions you might have.

+1 for vaping and/or changing your surroundings/day to day routine.

I found it easier to just quit cold turkey heading overseas on a plane for a long holiday for example. Because you are busy taking in all this new stuff every day you more easily forget about smoking..

If thats not an option give vaping a go.. I liked it since i first tried it and highly recommend it over smoking. I haven't smelt like crap for years now and my gf will kiss me after vaping haha..

Good for you two and hope it sticks. I quit once a few years ago but made a stupid rule which was that I was allowed to smoke when I drank. It contributed to my downfall and got me right back into it.

Hopefully, I'll be joining you two shortly.

Edit: Oh yeah, I haven't read the thread, but I highly recommend the book "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking" by Allen Carr. It can get a bit repetitive but it's by design I believe, it really hammers the idea into your head about how brainwashed us smokers really are.

For real. You wouldn't think a book could do that, but it did. The author used to smoke 5 packs a day, thought he'd never quit...couldn't quit. Had a few simple realizations, and went to 0. He shares those realizations in the book, which will take only a few hours to read. I quit the day I read it.

Any insight as to why it's working so well?

I'm not a smoker so I have no reason to buy it. Just curious since, as you mentioned, it doesn't seem like a book would do jack shit.

I also want to have the book explained. Generally, people talking about the book give off a real cult vibe. There's never any details given, just a lot of praise and recommendation.

Actually I'm finding it more and more gross to smoke and am about done with it. For various reasons the book has done something and I don't enjoy it anymore. I feel like it brainwashed me into enjoying the time I don't smoke more than actually smoking.

Opinions change, and your wife may feel more nostalgic than you do. Get the vaporizer now, and if it's never needed, it's $30-100 wasted that you may give to a friend someday, but if it's needed, it's not a cigarette that's being picked up, you know?

Might need to stop sniffing glue
Update:
After using the book, I've been smoke free for like.. about a couple of weeks. My wife is down to 1 a day and the cravings are mostly gone.

My brother was just diagnosed with Cancer. They say that they caught it before it was too late and should be able to remove it next month. I'm relieved of course, and still very worried for him.. .but.. even with this news.. no lighting up.

I'm not sure if it will stick, but I have to thank GAF for mentioning the book and all of the support you all give. You guys are awesome!

Edit: Perhaps he has a book on "The easy way to avoid impulse buying game consoles at launch" or "The easy way to avoid spending an insane amount of money during Visa Checkout-Best Buy promotions".

Glad to hear; each day smoke free is another victory. Keep up the support for your wife and she'll get there too. Congrats again for being smoke free.

Also, I hope that your brother makes a speedy recovery.

I smoked for 18 years, then one day September 2015 I stopped.
Never had another one since, the addiction is all in your head.

I smoked for almost 15 years and tried to quit multiple times.
In the end, I started listening to hypnosis type shit on YouTube whilst falling asleep at night. Lo and Behold, I haven't smoked nor wanted to smoke for almost 3 years.
And I'm someone who is as sceptical as hell about that sort of thing, but what can I say - it worked for me.

Lol. It is a bit like brainwashing tbh. It doesn't try to frighten you and it doesn't tell you things you don't know. It pretty much tells you things you already and at the same time puts things in a way that kind of seems to make sense. All of the sudden you just, agree with what is being repetitively said until you just, no longer want a smoke. It's positive brainwashing though. It's the only way I can put it.

Thank you. I def. appreciate the support. GAF has been a HUGE help, if not directly responsible for positive results.

Started reading that Alan Carr book out of curiosity and I can see why it works for some. It appears to induce a state of hypnosis by repetition of key phrases and concepts.

I don't smoke (did for a bit in college) but my fiancee is in the process of quitting. She's down to about a cigarette a day.

We're also giving up alcohol starting Monday until March. Living around so many bars and with friends or coworkers who also live in the area we go entirely too many Happy Hours.
