"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

You know the answer deep down already... but you can always try grabbing another cable from a friend to check for sure.

Yeaaah... I think I might grab an Elite this Saturday if this doen't sort itself out by then.

Are Elites fairly stable? Should I be checking out serial numbers?

Would suggest to look at the 60 gig 360s they are rumored to be Jasper chipsets. If worse come to the worst it's a Falcon. Not all Elites are Falcons.

Yeah... if nothing else you're guaranteed the latest hardware because they haven't been sat on store shelves for ages.

So...guess what happened this morning...
I decided to grab some MS points in preparation of BRAID....yeah, didnt make it that far.

I have a launch 360 and have never had a single problem out of it. Hell, I never really played it that much after launch honestly...and the one damn game I want more than anything on the lineup for 360 now has to wait. :( :( :(

Btw, this is my first broken console ever...thanks MS

Dropping my 360 off today at a UPS center to ship it back.

When should I expect it back in my hands again? What's the usual turn-around time these days?

What killed it winnarps? Also... is it an original or has it been refurbed before?

I brought it over to a friend's house to play Rock Band, and when I booted it up, I got the RRoD problem. I bought it brand new in July 2006. This is my first 360 failure.

Shame, too. I REALLY want to play Geo Wars 2 right now. /cries

60 gig isn't out in Australia. Hopefully the Falcon will be alright.

It will be nice to have HDMI and a 120g HDD.

From the day I dropped it off at UPS to the day I got it back was 6 days. My friend's wait was 5 days. They seem to have this down to a science now.

what shitty hardware the 360 is!! Holy!! I see people with 4,5,6 360's, how can you put up with that shit?!

The 3 year warranty and the rash of excellent games makes the pain worth enduring. I went through several PS2s back in the day as well.

Ok, so im trying to figure out if my 360 actually died. I usually keep my 360 in the upright standing position. I turned it on and got 3 red rings. They were in the upper right and upper left and lower left. That's not RROD right? What is it? The only thing, when I turn my 360 to lay down, the rings dont move, so when its laying down, its upper left and both on the bottom, which is RROD. I have had this happen to me before I think, but i just turned on my 360 again and it was fine. Im so confused and hop my 360 didn't bite the dust.

My second 360 died a few days ago. I have had the Elite for just under a year. What happened was I was playing Forza and suddenly the colour started to go wonky (funny red colours, missing colours, etc.) and the after some messing around, no picture at all....the video output died. I initially though it was my TV, then I tested different cable and input, but it was the 360.

Up to that point that was my only issue with that Elite. I have subsquently got a 20gig Falcon.

My first 360 (launch unit) started scratching the occasional disc so I traded it for the Elite.

The best games on a console (and friends) keeping bringing me back to Xbox though!

So is it still red ringing... or is it working OK now?

Temp RRoD can be down to a power spike / brownout, or it can be an indication that your 360 is on its way out.

Well i unplugged it for 6 hours last night and then turned it back on and it was fine. I turned it off right afterwards to go to bed. Turned it back on today and got 3 red rings again. But it's still top left right and bottom left when its vertical. This exact same thing has happened to me about 5 months ago and it ended up fine. So im hoping that it ends up being fine again.

Jeez this thread is depressing to read through. My non-falcon 360 is 7 months old and going strong(so far... =( )

Depressing was reading every single page to put the initial stats together...

...that was before I bought my 360 too. I'm surprised I could still bring myself to in the end. :lol

You're a brave man.

Well just got mine back and hooked it up. It is definitely not the same console, as the serial numbers don't match. They also DID NOT handle the license transfer, despite being told that it would be done, so I had to use up my one license transfer for the year via their DRM tool. I really hope that this piece of crap console doesn't break down yet again, as my insane amount of Rock Band content will be locked away again. I should have known better than to think that Microsoft would be able to pull this repair off with any sort of competency. I'm again reminded that Microsoft's "great user experience" is an exercise in frustration.

At least if anything does go wrong your repair will be on record so they can't argue handing another transfer for you.

You'd think so, but the last time this happened it took over a dozen phone calls, multiple BBB reports, written letters, then finally an e-mail carpet bomb to get the problem resolved. Needless to say, I frankly don't trust them to get the job done. It's a shame too, as outside of Rock Band tracks, I'll be doing my main DLC purchases on other consoles. It's almost like they are trying to advertise for Sony.

Yeah, but at that point there was no simple route for them to follow... and expecting minimum wage CS workers to come up with a decent workaround is probably hoping for a little too much. :D

I'm sure it's been answered in this topic before, but when I get my 360 replaced under warranty, does the one they send back have a new 3 year warranty on it?

So, i just got a a bond to be spent on anything i want (i had my 360 on extended warranty) , i want advice on wether buying a pro again or an elite. Consider i live in south america, so i don't have access to a lot of content, the pro includes 2 games. What should i buy?

Pro is probably the better value but if want a black 360 and with the newest update the HDD will actually be useful for running your games off of it then I would go with an Elite. I have an Elite myself because I don't believe in white consoles...

Cant say 100% that im sure but i dont think so, they new serial number on the 360 they send you is associated with your old unit serial number from what i read on a paper they sent with the 360.

Anyway, i got mine back, with a BenQ DVD drive, a lot more quieter than my old 360, i just hope this one lasts.

My falcon unit just red ringed on me. When it get a new system, it will be my 6th 360.

I only once have I seen a unit totally die on me and refuse to power back up after the red rings. Today I was playing Soul Calibur 4 and had been playing for about 2 hours. all of a sudden my unit just randomly shut off (no freeze) and the red rings flashed.

I have the best buy in store warranty, so I will exchange it for a new one no questions asked on Friday. Will take advantage of the recent price drop as well and probably get me a free game.

Thank god for that instore extended warrenty for 40 bucks, or else I would be a very unhappy customer right now.

I want to give a new update. I found out from so coworkers that there was a very slight power outage the night my 360 red ringed to a blank screen. They said it flickered so fast that it was like someone flipped the switch up and down within a second. I think that is why my falcon got a red ring.

I decided to not return it to the store and press on with it...

Sorry to scare some of you guys with some falcon related news...

This happens to me when there are powerblips. If the power spikes enough to turn off my PC or my TV, my 360 will go into a 3 red light mode. Then I'll reboot and I'll be fine.

Well I'm assuming that my 360 got RROD. Standing up it was not the right order of rings but laying down it was. Im assuming the rings just wouldn't switch when it was standing up. So I call 4myxbox and told them it was dead. They said I had to provide my own box tho...even though I thought they sent you the "coffin".

Well, my original December 2005 360 finally Red Ringed tonight. I was trying to play Halo 3 when suddenly the system hard freezed. Rebooted it. Hard freeze again within 2-3 minutes. It did this 2 more times before finally giving the Red Ring and not booting. I've already ordered a coffin from the website.

Fortunately, I have a Falcon spare at my parents house. The Falcon was supposed to be used at my house but for some reason I can only rarely get both systems connected to Live at the same time, so I left the second one at my parents house. Too bad. Almost got 3 years out of a 2005 unit!!

I finally got my power supply 9 days after my 360 arrived. Everything seems to be working fine, but that was the worst customer service I've ever had.

White Falcon Down

this my 2nd X360 ,i think summer caused this , but I guess now I am fucked totally in every hole in my body this time , since it's US imported system ( well there is no official MS dealership and no store buy PAL X360 with warranty coverage in my country , so Excuse Me Please ) the timing is very very bad ( i have PS3 and Wii too ) there is too much good games in the next few months so it's either less games on all systems and new Xbox360 , or no Xbox360 and no Gears 2 and Banjo :(

I'm in a similar position as you. MY US imported 360 died yesterday. I'm at the mercy of the store warrenty, which I think might have expired a couple of months ago.
If the only way I can continue my 360 gaming is by buying a new one then I'll dedicate my life to making the Zune a failure (I'm not very ambitious).

And to think I almost bought a 360 game just hours before it happened!

I'm planning on buying a Premium 360.
So, what should I know about it? Except to make sure that it's a 65nm Falcon console.
Anything else I should know\ask for?

wait a few weeks to see if the rumored price drop is true. increased hard drive size, 65nm cpu and gpu jasper that's better than the falcon and bundled games too?

so are all refurbs now getting newer better built systems?
not just the extra glue or paste or whatever they were only adding before, because after mine broke and I got the refurb I decided to trade it into gamestop until they worked out fixing these things better. I would think Microsoft would want to phase out all the faulty systems or this is gonna be a never ending cycle for all the systems bought in the 1st couple years or so.

Get the extended warranty, 3 years doesn't cover HDD and GFX card failures.

OK.
Also, should I get the Intercooler EX, or wait for the Intercooler TS?
And what's better, to put the 360 horizontaly or vertically?
Thanks.

Totobeni (and PowerSmell)... do you know anyone in the US that could return it for you? Obviously it would need to be someone fairly trustworthy, and the shipping would be a pain but it's a better option than just having a dead machine you can't do anything with.

Also, just to double check... is it definitely a falcon? (175w power supply)

Psychotext said:
Don't get an intercooler... they don't help and if anything it's proven that they're more likely to kill your console.
No, the first Intercooler that came out killed consoles.
The new Intercooler EX is much better and didn't kill any console.

Naruto said:

Except there's still no proof it helps anything. New 360s run pretty cool anyway so you're really wasting your time with these things.

Besides that, it's not heat that kills 360s (as anyone that has failed to towel one to death can tell you), it's thermal expansion / contraction of the motherboard.
