"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

For a while, I thought I might not be posting in this thread.

But here I am, and at a shitty time, I might add. Ringed tonight after watching some Netflix (of all things). Shitty part is, I was supposed to take the damn thing to a New Years party tomorrow for some Rock Band.

Instead, I'll be the life of the party as I sit there explaining why I couldn't bring the game and what "red ringing" means. Hoo-fucking-ray!

From what I've gleaned from some posts in this thread, I should not include my shiny new 120 HDD, yes?

I am lolzing at my new Pro's drive, and the issues it's having.

I have to try 3-4 times to force it to read a disc, and will occasionally pop out a disc in the middle of the game if I'm not running from the harddrive. As it's reading the disc though, the drive itself sounds fine. No 'unreadable disc' message either, it just likes to eject the disc; all of them brand new.

This doesn't occurring every time, but it's sure annoying to know the system I bought will likely be having serious issues with the drive in the near future.

I turned it on just now and got a black screen with a lot of white dots twitching around. My uneducated guess says the gpu is dead, and because I don't have the 3RL I imagine I'm not covered by any warranty?

Nope, you will get 3 red lights soon enough. That's how mine started before it red ringed. Would freeze with a loud high pitch noise and white dots.

And you will be covered by the 3 year warranty once you get the 3 red lights.

Woo. It's Back! 5.5 Weeks. (3 weeks for box, 2.5 weeks for repair + Holiday).

You know what blows? Having to redownload all the content. How the hell am I going to download 1400 items? And, half the list is "Unknown game, Unknown content" already.

Your HDD broke? Or did you send it in for some other reason?

No. Just the system. But everything is not sync to the console. Their "License Transfer" tool still needs me to redownload everything on the list.

no, their license transfer tool tells you to go to your download history and redownload everything you want to be tied with the new console, but if you still have the file on your HDD the download will take only a couple of seconds to sync the DRM stuff.

and why redownload everything? i don't think you need most of the stuff you downloaded over the time (old demos, videos, random crap). just fix the stuff you actually own.

:)

That's odd. I didn't need to redownload anything when I used it.
None of my stuff works.

I could also be jumping the gun, because the warranty site is still listing my old box, and the Web Live Marketplace still doesn't think I have a new console.

30+ XBLA titles + 75 RB Download packs = annoying scrolling. Of course I'm not looking through videos and demos.

The most annoying part is that looking through the list, a large chunk of items no longer exist on the network. I'm still entirely ticked off with the Lumines Earth Day Packs.

Still have to manually scroll through the list.

Also just noticed that there is no longer a list of "games you have - check out the DLC" list in NXE. Interesting, and fustrating.

happy new year to me, my second 360 RRODed for me :(
Falcon or older?

Oh, and I forgot: Yes, the Elite I got back is even older than the Refurb and the Original Elite I got. It also does not have NXE pre-loaded.

Does anyone have any specs for the different versions of the Xbox 360 (Falcons... Jaspers etc.) would like to know which version my Xbox 360 console is.

Look up your manufactured date there. It's not 100% guaranteed, but I guess a good start. Also, your power supply wattage should give a good hint as to which version it is.

So my Xenon (got it in Nov 06 when I couldn't get a Wii, yes really) RRoD on me the other day. (Ok, I did start up a thread on it.) Anyway anybody know if all the Xenon repairs are Opus now or not?

My refurbished console (the old one RROD on me after the warranty was announced)... the manufacturers date is 2005 - 11 - 04 :lol

Do I expect this console to die on me any time soon?

6 months to a year

older, the first was a launch (Xenon) , the second was a replacement Zephyr .

howcome nobody ever suggests looking at the power supply slot on the 360?

Not all falcons come with 175W PSUs, granted, but every falcon is compatible with a 175W PSU is it not? Thus every falcon PSU slot is keyed specifically for 175W PSUs.

Same with Jaspers and 150W PSUs. That seems like an easier way of identifying your console rather than looking inside for inductor rings or looking at lot numbers and such.

3RD TIME FOR ME.

I KNOW HOW TO REALLY STICK IT MS!!!! IM GOING TO GO OUT AND BUY AN ARCADE BUNDLE TOMORROW BECAUSE I CANT BARE TO BE WITHOUT MY SYSTEM FOR 3 WEEKS. THATLL SHOW EM!!!!!

I just realized that even though this console is only 2 years and 4 months old, and I got it as a replacement a year and a half ago, my original purchase date is more than 3 years ago so I can't get this fixed under warranty.

Am I right?

I avoid RROD by buying all my multi-platform games for my ps3. That way I can use whatever time I have with my 360 on exclusives.

My first RROD today; a summer 06 UK machine.

I'm using the web order form, do you have to print a shipping label? I uh... don't have a printer. They mention you can arrange them to send a pre-labelled box out; how do you do this? The 'order form' just has a lot of talk of SKU's and stuff. Better to call?

Gonna play Valkyria Chronicles some more in the meantime.

the rrod i just got last week was very strange. Console never had a hiccup, never had a problem, never froze. I decided to watch Die Hard for christmas, movie was fine no problems whatsoever. Later that day I turn it on to see if anybody was online....rrod, and that's all she wrote. How gay is that shit.

Have you tried removing your faceplate to see whether your drive still pop out? Try playing without a faceplate first. If there's no issue, then reinstall your faceplate to see whether the issue still exist.

Posting in here, because need a few questions answered. (and you people are great :D )

I've read quite a few of the last pages but can't find the answer I'm looking for, although there was a post vaguely covering the same thing, I'm after a more exact answer.

Anyway, my 360 RROD a few days ago, and I've not even had it a year yet. (Falcon, purchased Jan08)

So because it is within that 1st year, it still gives me the option to take it back to Game (UK) and exchange it for a brand-new one.

Right now here's the problem. Because they've changed the size of the HD now, I'm feeling like grabbing the 60GB and letting them take in my 20GB as faulty......problem is I have quite a few downloadable games on that hard-drive and I'd like to know whether I'd be fine to just download them again to my new 360 and its new 60GB hard-drive with no problems whatsoever.

The reason I ask this is because I've heard about DRM issues, and also the fact that downloaded games are tied to the 360 they are purchased on?

If anyone can answer my concerns here would be greatly appreciated. I just feel that because I'm within a year that I should just try and take that 60GB hard-drive with the swapped hardware and let them take my 20GB as faulty.

I'm entirely clued up now, a little google and I found my solution.

So it is just a case of using the new DRM transfer tool, which can be found on xbox.com for anyone else needing an answer to that. Only possible to do it once every 12 months though.

Yeh, just done that actually and copied them to a memory card.

Although I've found that quite a few games don't have separate save game files to copy. An example being Halo 3, and also a few downloadable games.

Only data there to copy for these titles are in Halo 3's case the downloadable maps, and with the downloadable games obviously just the game data itself.

Signed. Purchased Feb 2008, Mfg Oct 2007. Used about 2 hours/day average. Girl on the phone was quite nice but was just a script reader. I'll post again when it arrives back. Interestingly on the phone the system advises you to go online to log a broken console report, then when you go there it says my country (Australia) isn't supported and to call in.

Called Xbox suppo... India Fail support about 1 1/2-2 weeks ago. Got my shipping Box/Label together and shipped it out about 6 days or so ago. Im now randomly getting messages on Xbox.com that MS keeps putting holds on my package to be delivered at a latter date so there making UPS hold onto it. WHAT THE FUCK! Its like they enjoy torturing people who just want a working system....

Btw i originally asked for my Xbox to be repaired December 1st. 23 days on waiting for a repair box. Now its been getting close to 2 weeks of UPS and MS playing "lets hold this package!" Im really dreading my repair time. Im getting this feeling that once this is all done im just going to have a dead system arrive at my door step then ill take it outside and beat the shit to a pulp like the printer from Office Space.

This is what i keep getting

Shipping To:
MESQUITE, TX 75149

Current Status: THE RECEIVER REQUESTED A HOLD FOR A FUTURE DELIVERY DATE. UPS WILL ATTEMPT DELIVERY ON DATE REQUESTED

Heard a quiet thump, screen went green then locked up and after rebooting I get sound but no video (My second 360, Mfg 2006-04-05, exchanged for in April 2006). Died this morning three hours after Dell's 360 coupon ended. Fuck you 360 for hanging on just long enough to screw me out of a sale and for dying once I finally start playing the main quest in Fallout 3. Didn't even have the decency to give me an RRoD so I could exchange it.

Turned my 360 on today to catch up on some demo downloads and play some Lost Odyssey. The thing froze up on the dashboard. My console has frozen periodically a couple times before while playing games so I always figured the disc drive was shit. Tried rebooting it a couple times and it got stuck on the 360 logo that pops up when you start it up. The third time I try to restart, I get the three red lights. Restarted it and it got to the dashboard. However, it will occasionally freeze on the dashboard still and consistently (every time) freezes 5 seconds after loading Lost Odyssey.

Bright side:
Console is under three year warranty.
Actually got the three red light error.
I mainly game on PS3 so this isn't too terrible as far as not being able to play anything.
I get a newer console, even if it is a refurb.

Bad side:
Kind of wanted to play Lost Odyssey for a few hours tonight and now I'm bummed that I can't. Sucks :(
Worried about potential headaches and bullshit in the return / exchange process.

Already filed my warranty claim. So far so good.

Got a console manufactured in November 2006 in December 2006, and it just RRoD'ed on me last night almost exactly like tanod. Am getting the box sent out to me cause I don't want to go through the hassle of finding a box, packaging material, etc.

So, what's to be expected on the replacement? Are people actually getting newer units with/without HDMI? Is there a way to put peanut butter into my fan (or credit cards into the DVD tray) to get a newer system back?

TIA

I've been out of the loop for a while, but this thread still has me worried since my 360 is still a pre-Falcon, pre-Jasper refurb from Microsoft. And I've had it for a year now I think, with no issues, crashes whatsoever.

Is their RROD situation getting under control? Are refurbs still ticking time-bombs?

Depends on what you get back. Still a crapshoot.

@draven: I've heard that if you don't have HDMI, you're definitely not getting one back that does, regardless of how new the build is.

My 5th Premium has ceased to be. This time was the lower right quadrant flashing red with an error code E74 (hardware failure). The last 4 times were 3RL. So I just went out and bought an Elite. Don't know why cos my premium was still in warranty and is being shipped off next week (I'll just EBAY the refurb and put the proceeds back into the credit card). I'm just fed up of the white buggers failing on me so I went for a beastly black one (I wanted that 120GB baby anyway). Do Elites have a better record? Will I live long and prosper with this one?

I'm starting to do this more and more as well. (At this point I'm pretty tempted to go with the PS3 version of Saints Row II even though I hear the 360 version is actually better.) The one down side of this is my brother can't borrow games from me. (Since he only has a 360.) Oh well, hopefully next generation we'll see more systems in the Wii style. (IE a moderate improvement in graphic abilities but much less in the way of issues with reliability, heat, or power usage.)

My dad bought a pro/premium whatevertf it's called on black friday. Best Buy got around to installing it and everything else he bought three weeks later. Four days after install, he can get sound, but not video. No error codes or anything just a blank screen with proper sound. I'm not sure if it was a jasper or not, I'm thinking not. Anyway, back it goes to BB for a replacement.

What's the GAF consensus on the the best way to keep the xbox ventilated and preventing RROD?

I've heard the vertical position gives the best air flow. Plus i've been told the soldering on GPU (graphics chip) tends to come loose on the motherboard models. When the 360 is used in the horizontal position, that GPU hangs upside down, possibly causing the GPU to become easily dislodged enough to cause an RROD faster. For best results, use the 360 in the vertical position instead.

First of all, BB had to install the console? :lol

Did he check the little HDTV/SDTV switch on the video cable?

It makes no difference. As long as you don't have it completely crammed into somewhere you really can't do any more. Either your machine will kick the bucket eventually or it wont.

Eh, he also bought a Kuro and a soundbar, receiver and new BD player, and wanted the Kuro wall mounted. He wanted all of that setup for use with a harmony remote, something he wasn't going to attempt. It was far simpler for him to just have BB do all the work for whatever god-awful price they charged than to make me drive the 200 miles to do it for him :)

That said, are you talking about a physical switch, on an HDMI cable? Is that some kind of GAF humor I don't get? Unfortunately I'm %100 unfamiliar with the 360 back panel, so if it's a switch on the back of the console, I apologize, and no he probably didn't check anything :)

No, there's no switch on the HDMI cable. Only the component / composite ones.

RIP - Tanod's 360 manufactured in 2006 (purchased in 2007)

This happened to me two weeks ago. I was playing Dead Rising and the same exact thing happened. I restarted several times only to get frozen either at boot up or some point in navigating the dashboard.

I got it working a few days later (it'll probably happened again lol i hope not).

Here's what I did.

Unplug everything including the hard drive.
Let it sit for a day.
Connect everything back.
Boot and do the hard drive maintenance (X, X, Left shoulder, X, X, Right shoulder)
Restart your console.

If it's not working then it could be corrupted data on your hard drive from the game that frozed. Sadly, you might just have to delete your LO save. Or maybe back it up and transfer it back. If that doesn't work, then you might have to reformat your entire hard drive.

And if that doesn't work, well fuck you microsoft!

Turned on my 360 this morning to start playing my brand new copy of Fallout. During the intro video, the console froze up. Upon powering down and powering back up, those 3 lovely lights flashed red. This is my second RROD; the latest console was manufactured in 2006. It is on it's way back to Microsoft.

It is always good to have a reminder why I prefer to buy most of my console games for the PS3, when both versions are about equal...
