"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

Another one bites the dust :

360 manufactured in October 2005. Almost never used but TEH awesome is coming GTA4 in less than 2 months :(

What should I do (I'm in Europe/Belgium) ?

How long is the turnaround time in the US? Will I have my console back by the time GTA4 is released (the "coffin" is on its way now)? And if I have a 175 W power supply, will they definitely send me a Falcon? If they send me an older console along with a 203 W power supply, I'm just going to cut my losses and sell the console, then replace it with a PS3. I know people have gone through far worse with 360 defects, but I don't see any reason why I should tolerate this. What good are the games if I don't have a system to play them on?
Also, I read something about some customer service reps attempting to placate customers by offering a free game published by Microsoft Game Studios. Is it worth calling customer support again to ask for this? >_>

Well after a little over two years my 360 died on me. My dead baby of a console was manufactured in January of 06. I'm sure this has been asked a billion times by now but due to the sheer size of this thread I was just wondering how quickly turn around time is now. I'm pissed but after reading some of the horror stories here I can't complain too much since this is my first dead 360.

Anyone seeing these out in the wild yet?

Seems like a less plausible version of the previous "leaked" info, especially because they've got the details on the Falcon wrong (it already has a 65nm CPU) and they're talking about a 65nm GPU / CPU version that's not Jasper.

The jist of it is there though - there are two more revisions coming for retail boxes (65nm CPU / GPU, 45nm CPU / GPU), and an improved non-HDMI version is coming to let them use the old cases that don't have an HDMI port for refurbs.

Console #3 just died. Got it two weeks ago from MS, the same day Lost Odyssey came out. Tried playing last night, was getting weird glitchey things all over my screen. Turned it on today, three red rings.

The console was manufactured 12-26-2007, but i guess that doesn't matter much. Two weeks and it's dead.

As soon as this warranty is done, this shitty (quality wise) console gets buried where all those ET games are.

I cant believe I thought my 2nd console was immune to death.
manufactured date: 11 13 05

2 years and four months, console is dead.

Waiting for my coffin.

That's surprising, that should be a Falcon unit and I was under the impression that the Falcons simply had the RROD removed from them altogether (ie: Microsoft has changed the error mechanism to get by having to support the models for 3 years)
Either way this is the first likely Falcon I've heard of dying.

:(

MrBob had his go down over Xmas and it took close to 4 weeks. I would say 3-4 weeks minimum.

As stated earlier my launch box died as well.

R.I.P. -11/04/2005 - 02/28/2008

Coffin is on its way.

So some questions.

1. Does the warranty for your "fixed" console extend another 3 years (against RROD)?

2. How much is the extended warranty from MS?

So just a few weeks ago I recieved what I believe is my fourth console (starting to lose track heh) and yet again its a refurbished one. This one works ok so far, but it is far louder than any of the other ones I've had. I really can't stand how loud it is and it even has the new DVD drive. My 3rd console had the same drive and it was very quiet. Anyway is there any chance I could just call up and lie about this one saying it's getting RRoD and they would replace it? Or will they test the console when I send it in and just send it back if its ok?

From what the customer service agent told me they do test to make sure it is "RRoD", if it is not they will contact you and let you know if you want them to continue to fix for a $99 fee or just ship the broken box back.

My friend bought an Elite in May 2007 and last night it locked up while playing Halo 3 co-op with me. He tried rebooting and got the RROD. Twice.

What's his best bet now? Go through Gamestop (he bought the warranty) or straight through Microsoft?

What are people doing about hard drives these days? Keeping theirs so they don't lose their content?

It irks me because he is (was) more of a casual gamer and he's not used to consoles breaking like this. He's been really happy with 360 up to now so this is a shame.

And it also has me on the deathwatch for my own Elite purchased at about the same time. Cripes, what IS the failure rate for these things? It's got to be well above 50 percent.

Damn not a good day for playing....Got an e-mail saying my LIVE would be expired, even though I should be good till june. Took 3 calls (each louder than the last) as they were trying to convince me I had only been a member since jan'08 (even thought 99% of my achievements are from last year).

Then go back to COD4 SP and get DDE on the exact same part (entering missile silo), thankfully I got a cool dude at EB games who will let me exchange it.

I knew I should have went to work today :D

So I took my Xbox 360 to the my UPS location to ship it off for repairs, and the guy working there knew immediately what it was.

He says he gets an average of 3 to 4 a day.

I think almost every single person I know has had their 360 breakdown, and not just for the 3 right lights of horrible death. Drive failure, Video glitches, and even busted Ethernet port connections. 16% fault rate seems low to me.

There's no way it's only 16%, but even if it was... 16% of 10 million is 1.6m dead consoles. With that many dead out there it's not surprising that pretty much everyone knows someone with a dead machine. :lol

from what actual people who sent in boxes that didn't red ring have said, once the reason is rrod, they send out another box as soon as they receive your rrod console, then they do any checking after the fact.

So my Xbox 360 randomly today decided to become retarded and won't read any discs, despite the fact it was playing fine yesterday. Is the unplayable disc error covered by warranty or will I have to induce a RROD?

Sending my son's in already. Less than 3 months old. Got the disk scratched by the lens issue.

Is there any truth to the "stand it on end" and it won't get scratched theory? I can move things around in my enteratainment center to make this happen if need be so it won't happen again.

Not particularly, no. Most 360s don't do this so hopefully the one you get back from MS wont.

I would consider "toweling" the console to get a RRoD before you try returning it. Last I checked, Microsoft still doesn't recognize the disc scratching problem as existing.

This is most likely not ironic, at least by definition. But it pretty much passes for what most people believe it to mean.

RIP 2nd 360, March 4, 2008 3 red lights
1 year 1 month old

Are you fucking serious? I know that their zombie-like dumbass customer support reps were trained to claim that the user was tilting the console while it was in use, but I was so adamant that the DVD drive was defective. Do I really need to resort to intentionally destroying their console in order to get them to fix a problem? If I receive an unchanged 360, I'm going to be so pissed... I mean... wtf could I do? I honestly almost feel like I should just try to sell it and replace it with a PS3 if the problem isn't fixed. GTA4 is coming up, and I'm not going to wait for it to send the 360 in again...

we got our first falcon rrod report many many pages back they are indeed not immune to red ring of doom. the fundamental design of the 360 itself is probably flawed and not just cheap manufacturing. I bet that as time goes on more and more falcons will break until we see a complete system redesign.

Anyway im considering selling mine towards the new mgs4 bundle when my new rig comes in this friday.

We did? So far there are 3 dead falcons on record... all from rs7k and all with dead drives from the same store. There have certainly been no NeoGAF people with RRoD falcons prior to this month.

As for that console, the date on the refurbs MS sends out isn't a manufacturing date, it's a refurb date. Will check with Skilletor to get more details when I do the stats though.

Wow, I didn't know they "re-date" units that are refurb'd. When did they start doing this? I was under the assumption that the date sticker was always from the original unit.

Do we know if the RRoD has been removed from Falcons? I'm pretty sure I read that Microsoft removed the ability for the machine to RRoD and now it doesn't nothing or spits out some error message, no RRoD (to bypass them having to support it).

Got this today when shopping at Toys R Us, just for Gaf

So far I've seen one confirmed RRoD falcon machine on the net (though I'm sure there must be more out there). It's the picture of the Halo machine sat on the carpet.
Possibly that dead 360 at GDC was a falcon with RRoD... but it's impossible to tell if it was a new or old machine.

Doesn't really matter though, because RRoD light setup or not, these things aren't dying as much as the original 360s... yet. There was talk of the newer models having a "xmas lights" pattern to replace the 3 lights patten but nothing much has come of it since the initial (probably inaccurate) report.

Yup, my last box was scratching nice circular rings into my games, and Microsoft would only claim that it was user error, and that it did not fall under their warranty. Luckily, I had an in-store replacement plan, but right now, your best bet might be to kill it yourself, and hope you get a different console out of their pool of spares.

Yeah this is what I was talking about. Guess it was all BS, good because it would seem really dirty tactics to remove the RRoD to get by the wording in the extended warranty.
Either way it probably doesn't matter though, even if they removed all the lights on the box on newer iterations people would still think of the 360 as the RRoD machine.

Fell victim to the freezing issue a few weeks ago. Within a day the thing completely bricked. I received a brand spankin' new one from Microsoft yesterday and I'm crossing my fingers that it lasts. It's a recent model, the kind with an HDMI port, but so was my first one....

OK, I'm going to get my broken 360 repaired and then sell it. I don't want to be caught in the continuing merry-go-round of failing machines and am hoping that a new Premium will get me out of that madness. I'm already stuck with the DRM problem on downloaded games so getting a new system won't really matter.

So how do I tell if the one I'm buying isn't old and crusty? I want to be sure I'm getting one of the revamped models and not just another lemon (not that any of them are foolproof these days...)

If I didn't need one for the work I do, I'd bag the entire system.

Yes, buying a new one makes me a bigger part of the problem.

175w PSU.

My 3rd console died yesterday. Was playing Lost Odyssey for the first time. It freezed and upon reboot... RRoD.

The other two problems were : GPU (1st), DVD Drive strap broken (2nd).

Sorry I got this thread confused with its sister thread at txb. Falcon have been confirmed not immune to failure since at least December. Also go check out Xbox.com for further proof. Falcons do better for sure but the underlining faults still remain.

If thats true that is some of the shadiest stuff I ever heard of. So when a falcon breaks since it isnt officially an "rrod" they don't have to support the three year warranty specifically for rrod? I hope that's not the case.

Nothing is immune to failure... but falcons clearly have more of a normal electronics failure rate than other 360s.

BAM there goes my second 360 - RROD biaatches.

Oh well, maybe they'll replace it with an Elite, either way I want my replacement/repaired unit back asap, I got games to play Gatesy you prick!!!

So... any advice on selling things on Ebay? I'm not going through this shit again. I know that some people can tolerate it, but I just can't. I bought this system to play games, not to endure frustrating customer service phone calls.

So they're a fairly safe buy at this point? Is the price likely to go down again soon?

Probably drop for GTA4... who knows though. As for safe buy? Fairly would probably be right, but you could always be one of the unlucky few. :lol

Sorry to bump this depressing trainwreck of a thread..

My launch Jap 360 died a few months ago. I took it to a game shop to get repaired, they had it for a month and then returned it saying that it was broken 'for good'.

I decided to try another place. They fixed the red light problem (plus gave me a 3 year guarantee) but now it looks like the first shop swapped my dvd drive for a broken one.

My question : Are the dvd drives 'locked' to their respective xbox 360 units? Will I be able to just buy a replacement dvd drive or am I screwed?

Mine just died...one red light bottom right side(been having problems with two red lights left quad) got to pay $99 dollars for a repair, I not to happy I thought the warranty was extended to 2yrs?

So I was at the Hawks/Heat game earlier tonight, and I got a call from my brother. He had taken our 360 to a friend's house to play some Halo 3 and COD4, and when they connected it and were ready to start playing, the 360 RROD'd right when they turned it on. :lol ;_;

This is the 3rd 360 that has RROD'd on me. I have the Best Buy warranty plan, so I'm going there tomorrow to swap it for a new 360. The 360 I had was an early '07 (before the Zephyrs came out), so I'll definitely make sure that I get a Falcon. At the same time, I paid $399 for the 360 when I first got it, so if they give me back the $50 difference, I'll use it to get another warranty.
