"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

Well another day, another RRoD'd 360. Add one more dead console to the list. This unit lasted about a year, and was pre-falcon. Died during the very, very end of Half-Life 2 Episode 2. I don't think I have the heart to start it up again when I get it back. When my last 360 died, I made the decision to buy all multi-platform releases on the PS3 going forward. I'm very glad I made that decision.

I love my 360, but whoever engineered it deserves a punch to the throat. Since I don't know who that is, I'll reserve the throat punch for Mr. Major Nelson.

Drive is basically dead on mine. Can't make it 15 minutes without it failing to load.

Got this in Feb of 07. Is there any particular serial number I should look out for in the replacement? Or any way to judge which system would be the most reliable when replacing it? Please let me know asap if you know, as I'm leaving to exchange it soon.

Whelp, a few months ago I had lightning ruin 2 [shit] surge protectors, a wireless router, a modem, a network card, a mobo on another PC and quite a chunk of my cat5 cables.

I had my 360 hardwired at the time and figured only my cat5 cable had gotten the ax. Whelp, tried booting up the 360 today in awhile and figured out it must of also got my 360's network card. This along with the amounting disc reading errors has led me to believe there is only one option out of this.

So I ask you veterans of Red Ringdom, what's the best method to put my launch 360 to rest so I can get this thing replaced.

Can I get one in there also? Maybe a swift kick in the balls is better.

Well....Have to sent mine in. Piece of shit >_<!!!!!!

Oh well, atleast it will be free

Really shitty week its been.
My BadCompany disc got wreck...which was caused by the system dieing
...So I go back to Omega Five, and get good at it
Then it finally kicks the bucket
And I finally reach hell in Diablo II exceot no one plays the game anymore:lol

Maybe Warcraft III wouldn't be betray me

My 360 didn't actually DIE but I got the RROD a few days ago. It happened during a severe lightning storm (probably not the best idea to play my 360 during a bad storm :lol) Knocked my power out for a few seconds and and the RROD came on. All I did was turn it off and it was working fine.

I'm back baby! (remind me not to do ban bets again... :lol )

I have quite a few PMs to send out to check the status of a few machines and clear up some old data. Thanks again to pswii60 for posting the stats while I was gone.

1 - What the heck?

2 - Anyways so does it finally mean that the Falcon 360s have lower rate of failure?
1 - What is a "heck"? (don't even try there's nothing racist in what I said, nothing but rove)
2 - No, that just means that unlike you, people are tired to talk about their dead 360 or about their neverdie360 or maybe they just don't know what a falcon is or they don't care to post about it here ...

I see... I wondered what the agenda was. Should have been obvious from the avatar really.

Wouldn't be so funny but I started doing the stats to show just was a shitty piece of hardware the 360 was and that MS should be f*ck*ng ashamed of themseves. Of course, I got attacked from the other direction then. Ho hum.

Well, bought my 360 last year, June '07, but it's got a manufacture date of 2005-12-26. HOLY SHIT. I didn't know this was a launch console. Sons of bitches! Oh yeah, it's the premium 20 gig.

Well, it would start making strange noises with the disc drive and I'd get DRE errors a few times, but I didn't mind it so much because it wasn't the RROD... until six months after purchasing it. I called and told them it was both the disc drive and the rrod. They sent me a box and returned my 360 10 days later (coincidentally, I'd also sent out my wii at the same time for dre errors and got it back the same day). As soon as this one DRE's again, I'm going to hunt for one of the falcon 360s.

Please add at least one More RRoD for June. The Falcon system I played demos on expired that month.

November is coming, and all your warranties are on the line.
I realized in June that people only have six more months of get there RRoD systems fixed under warranty.

so my 360 is dying i think... the colors on the screen are turning all green and red everywhere and i cant make it stop. red ring incoming? im not sure what the symptoms are.

Kinda depends when you bought your console... but yeah, that's true for launch machines.

GPU is dying... sadly RRoD can take a while from there.

Kinda depends on what?
It seems to be a difference of understanding.

A. Is Microsoft covering your console for the next three years?
B. Or was Microsoft saying they would cover it for the first three years of this generations life?

My understanding has always been Option B.
Then everything goes back to one year or 90 days.

It's the former.

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/Xbox360/resources/warrantyupdate.htm

REDMOND, Wash. — July 5, 2007 —Microsoft Corp. today announced that it will expand its global Xbox 360™ warranty coverage. Any Xbox 360 customer who experiences a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights will now be covered by a three year warranty from date of purchase. All other existing Xbox 360 warranty policies remain in place.

Could you please share a link?

The E3 2007 announcement was a retroactive announcement.
The $1 billion dollar pledge only covers three years of losses.
I've read the SEC filings. They have been losing over $300 Million a year on warrenty coverage.
If you are correct they will have to again pledge for another two years until the Xbox 3 comes out.

My Xbox got the RROD a while ago. But I was lazy and waited. Eventually I did call a few months ago. The box arrived 3 days later, I sent it out that Monday and it was back by the next.

Now it is working great. I'm watching a video file off my Mac mini server with Rivet running.

I just wish the fan wasn't so damn loud. But that's one of those complaints everyone has.

I am having another problem though. The Xbox ALWAYS freezes when playing Half-Life 2 (The first) in the last level. (The Citedel.) I am unable to procede passed that part in the game and finish it. And it never freezes in any other game, neither on the Orange Box or any other game whatsoever. So I am hoping that's a known problem with the Orange Box. :(

It could be the game software itself. There are many complaints about how EA has done nothing to fix it.
It could be the disk itself. Have you wiped, cleaned or polished the game disc?

My first thought was that sounds like a scratch.

Everytime there's a decent 360 sale in Canada, and I'm tempted to buy one, this thread rears its ugly head. You are all much braver than I. Of course, once Kotor3 launches, I will have no choice. :D

My original 360 elite RROD'd about three weeks ago, I think it was at the beginning of june.
It's already on it's way back and it should be here after this weekend.

I'm on my second 360 at the moment

First one red ringed, used the towel trick because I really wanted to play Crackdown, that worked for a while until it was sent back, this was last year.

normal 360 with 20gb hard drive

I'm not sure what people are expecting on this... even if by some major miracle they got the falcon models down to a 3% failure ratio (I don't think that's what it is, it's an example) you're still looking at 30,000 consoles per 1 million sold that will fail. You're never going to hear the end of it.

Oh, I forgot to say. I sent out a ton of PMs yesterday to get some clarification on a few failures and see if I can get people who have posted in other threads about their 360 failing to come and post here (so I can get them in the stats). Thanks to everyone who has replied and those (already and in future) who have come to post. :)

You should be fine now. I'm certain the older stuff has been flushed out by now. Still, you can check the box.

I just went and bought a 360 arcade - I got the BenQ drive and it's a Falcon, :D and I'm just about to ship off my old launch model off for repairs.

Btw I'm just curious - to those who have a RROD 360, how was it positioned? I had mine horizontal.

Ok, so here is the thing. My 360 can not play disks. I tried everything, and it will always make this loud clunking noise whenever I put a disk in. Also, sometimes when I close the tray, it just opens right back up. Called them up, and since I don't have warrenty, it will cost $100. Now here is the thing, if I call them back up and say that the thing red-ringed as well, will they repair the disk drive as well, or just the motherboard?

I am trying to red-ring it right now, I have it running and wrapped in towels for hours now but nothing is happening.

It died a couple of months ago I just didn't bother doing anything about it.

And yeah it was RROD. It just started locking up before eventually dieing completely.

About positioning, to me it looks like more vents are covered up when it's in the vertical position. The vent underneath (while vertical) is basically flat against the surface it's standing upon. It doesn't have the same effect while horizontal due to the concave shape. It didn't matter either way though since mine carked it regardless.

edit: concave not convex

Vent obstruction obviously doesn't help, but it's the hot and cold cycles that kill 360s. (Ironically they're more likely to survive if you leave them on all the time. :lol )

Mine died 2 weeks ago from RROD. I bought it refurbished last year - it was made in 2004. The turnaround time was very surprising. It didnt take more than a week to come back to me since I sent it. I got it just a week before E3 which I was very happy about.

So recently my 360 launch unit's disc drive has been acting strange. I'll put a game in and close the tray only for it to pop back out. I have to do this 3 or 4 times until the tray stays in.

Tonight I noticed that the drive itself would be running at it's normal louder than hell speed only to slow down to the point that it was extremely quiet. I could still hear the disc spinning and the game was still playable but the drive was really quiet. The drive would then would speed back up to normal.

Any clues? Am I fucked?

It's having trouble reading. At first it doesn't even think you've put a disc in (which is why it spits it) and when it slows down it's trying to re-read sectors it's having trouble with. You can try a lens cleaner but it's likely it's on its way out for good.

I unplugged my 360 to spray the innards with compressed air. After I plugged it back in, I was greeted with RROD, but I tried to replug it in and it works fine for now. I was wondering if it is on the way out or if it was a fluke. Just for good measure, my 360 is a Falcon manufactured 11/13/2007.

Hmmm well from my experience putting it horizontal the GPU side (in this case the bottom of the console) feels warmer (even the surface wooden table where I place the console feels warm). Putting it vertically the GPU side feels cooler.

Dosen't make sense as it looks like there's more vents on the bottom. But yeah anyways my Elite died when it was vertical. So positioning don't think would make a big difference.

To Archie, sounds like a one time fluke. Did you plug everything back tightly the first time?

Xbox #1 was purchased in August of 06, died of RRoD in June of 07. Thanks to the best buy 2yr warrenty, easily replaced.

Today, Xbox #2 died...July 08. Warrenty still in effect. This time the disc drive kept skipping on all discs. Thing couldn't read a brand new copy of GH Aerosmith. Not only could it not read the disc, but it scratched the shit out of it too. Lucky the game was free.

Today, Xbox #3 was welcome into my home, now with HDMI ;) . Extended that warrenty so I don't have to deal with MS AND got 110 in Best Buy store credit thanks to the recent price drop.
