"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

so my freshly repaired 360 (just got it back a couple weeks ago after the DVD drive fucked up) seems to have gone down the shitter AGAIN. I get home from work to find the 360 on with the DVD drive open. I think to myself WTF? and close the drive and shut off the system...it powers itself up and the drive opens and closes itself again. I try to shut it off again only now the front power button and dvd drive button do not respond at all. I had to shut it off using the controller through the menus and unplug the goddamn thing just to get it to stop. Contacted MS and they are sending me another coffin. Fuck this. Right when Braid, Geometry Wars 2 and Soul Calibur 2 hit this has to happen? Not to mention i still haven't finished GTA4 because my 360 was taken out of action for like 3 weeks the last time.

At this point im honestly just considering cutting my losses and selling the thing as soon as i get it back from "repair", and picking up an elite or at least a new arcade system. Which would give me the newest, quietest, least prone to fuckups hardware at this point? Is there anything in particular to look for?

Yeah their repair center is a piece of shit.
My 360 came back with the DVD disc drive button half busted. I got to hold down the button like hell for the door to open at all now.

The Jasper 360 is supposed to be out this month, but so far no one knows if the new systems out now are Jaspers.

the repair process is a joke. i've sent in my console 3 times in the past 8 months for DRE's and i'm almost convinced they didn't replace it any of those times.

i'm just trying to run the drive into the ground completely now so that they NO CHOICE but to repair it.

I think my GPU is fried. I just fixed it at a store on my own dime (imported US system) for rrod, and they said that they also upped the voltage of the fans to make the system cooler.
Two days later, my systems starts to freeze with wierd artifacts, the kind of artifacts that I've seen on pics online when people get a dead/dying GPU. A few reboots later my 360 gives me the red. POOP!
Since I'm out of a warrenty and there's no way this can be fixed (as far as I've been told by the places here) I'll just have to eat my own shit.

I'm considering getting a PAL 360 Arcade SKU, as it's much cheaper here and covered by MS, but all my games are NTSC-U, and so are my XBLA games and account, and I'm afraid too many of them just won't work.

i got the call today that minewill be back tomorrow! yay! pretty fast turnaround too! less than 2 weeks from my door and back! *edit i just checked my shipping and my package weight is only 8 pounds. Can i use my old power supply? after reading this thread i'm kinda confused. The instructions for return said keep all the cables.

Got 3 RR today, (3 day old 360, Falcon, BenQ) freaked out, took it out of the extension cord and plugged into the wall and everything was well.

Wasn't getting enough power from the extension cord. I didn't know you got the lights for that, so there I was sitting there thinking it was already foobar.

Whew!

It has been discussed before: Falcons (or new PSUs) are quite more sensitive to votage / current oscillations. They tend to 3RL on unstable power lines. It's just a warning signal.

Well, my X-Box 360 Falcon (made in December '07) has been crashing on me recently. It has happened once when I was shutting down the system through the guide button, another time when I hit the guide button after going through the list of demos in the Marketplace, and it has crashed multiple times while playing the X-Box Originals version of Fable. Should I be worried? Do you think I should go to Best Buy and use my extended warranty to get a replacement or wait?

Edit: I know this thread is about reporting consoles that died, but I didn't know where to ask this question and I didn't think it was worthy of making a new thread.

Just a bit of an update. There have been many times recently where I would start up a game, such as Bomberman Live, Halo 3, or GTA 4, and the game would go into a black screen. The system totally crashes on me when this occurs and I can't do anything except shut it down.

I don't know what to do. It really annoys me that I only had a X-Box 360 since March and I'm going to have to return it for my 3rd one.

My first 360 Elite I've had since May of last year finally got RRoD. Since I actually bought the 3 year warranty(before it became free), for some reason I can't register my 360 online for repair so that sucks. Also, will I get a renewed warranty when I get my 360 fixed?

what do you mean by "finally", you had it for only one year, this is what its come to with the 360 I guess.

FROM PSYCHOTEXT...

Thanks to pswii60 for posting the numbers. This will be the last time I update the dead 360 stats here at NeoGAF. It takes a very long time to collect the data and send the all PMs to clear up data, dates, types etc and if I get banned it takes even longer to try and catch up when I get back.

Usual Disclaimer: These numbers wont match up to the list post simply because unless I could tell when your 360 died / was replaced, you weren't included in the figures. That's basically anyone that just posted to say that their 360 died last year some time or they've had x dead 360s and gave no more information. Also, if you posted to say your 360 was acting up and never came back to confirm its death / shipment / getting a new one... you aren't included either.

Don't forget that NPD US numbers are simply included to give a rough idea of how many 360s are out there for each particular month.

In the figures so far are 1313 dead / replaced 360s, 9 of which were falcon models.

This Month

RRoD: 25
Drive: 4
Other Red Light: 3
Video: 2
Freezing: 1

8 of the 9 refurb failures were due to RRoD.

Overall Falcon Issues
DOA: 4

Just got 3RR for the 3rd time. It really sucks too since I just got Braid yesterday and the game is actually great. Still on the 3 yr warranty (until December since I got it December 2005). I told the guy that I was concerned about this happening again and he said that they are considering extending the Red Ring Warranty past the 3 years (not sure if he meant in my case or in general). I was then transfered to the supervisor and he said that they were going to upgrade it to the HDMI (he made it sound that way, but I'll wait and see), plus the repair box was going to be be shipped priority (he said I should get the box tomorrow or Tuesday at the latest), and that after I get it and am happy with it to call and get some extras for all my troubles( he said that I will be able to choose from accessories and games). It really sucks that this happen again, but at least MS is not being a total bastard about compensation.

my Launch system just died.

At first COD4 would freeze and then white dots across a screen would come up. I rebooted got the 3 red rings.

I called 18004myxbox # and reported it and the dude said he would send the coffin.

The problem is that i rebooted it again and now the thing works fine?! should i still send it in?

quick question guys:

for the 3 red rings did you guys send you wires in along with the 360? I could have sworn the tech support dude said just send the system in . Just wanna make sure

send it in completely bare (including the faceplate-they'll send it back to you with a brand new one:D so you'll have a spare).

Man that is killing me. It's not a RROD issue (yet) and I ran out of the normal warranty. Is there some way to make MS fix the shit for me?
My 360 started lockup randomly while playing games. All the games that I tried the discs were super clean with no sign of scratches, but the game froze... Then, this morning it seems to be ok. It's crazy that it feels like owning a ticking bomb.

Well, it lasted a good couple of years, but it's finally succumbed to the RROD. And here I figured that because I bought mine ~6 months after launch and it hadn't died so far, I was safe.

Screen went all poopy and then when I rebooted, it was this:

I'm pretty sure I bought it April after the system came out. Is there anything MS will do at this point? (Haven't read recent posts in the thread yet, gonna work my way up).

So, my launch 360 seems to have finally gone belly-up, and i can't bear the thought of 3 weeks without my console [sad, I know]. Where's the best place to get a new 360 these days and to protect yourself with an extended warranty? Best buy? Costco? [I'm kicking myself for missing out on the recent dell deal].

I would love to have it setup so that if this happened in the future, i could just walk into a store and walk out with a warrantied replacement. Thanks.

My late-2006 unit died. I am really pissed because I didn't even game on it that much. It's my least played console. And I know to expect that the refurb they're going to send me is going to break down in a year or two as well. This is fucking ridiculous.

Oh and on top of that I have to supply my own fucking box to ship it out in.

Well, I'm now going on Xbox number 4. My Elite started freezing yesterday and within 15 minutes it would no longer boot. It even made that hardware windows 'beep' the last time I tried to turn it on. I would be super pissed if I didn't have a back-up 360, but at the same time... 4 Xbox's?

Is there anyone reading the thread that either works at Best Buy or has used their Product Replacement Plan? I want to know how the process goes. Do I just bring in the console, tell them the problem, and they'll replace it? Or do I send it to them and wait a week for a gift card? Do they check the system before replacing it? The reason why I ask is because I'm having freezing problems that doesn't occur consistently. Like one day it could be working flawless then the next day, I won't even be able to play due to freezing problems.

Just to clarify i posted earlier that my 360 died and I need to clarify that it was an ORIGINAL and it got the red rings of death.

Question for Anyone that has returned their 360 to Gamestop.

Im on my second 360 and im still under warranty(renewed it in October right before they stopped selling their 1 year warranties). My question is that im worried my 360 is near its end(graphical errors and random lock ups at times but not always)while its not dead yet and possibly may not die, does Gamestop usually check to see if your 360 is dead before they just give you a new one? Or do they usually take your word for it? Im thinking about bringing it in very soon and try to exchange for a new one before the warranty runs out.

So I got rro'd two weeks ago. Proper RROD, not this faulty plugin stuff. Couple of days, still rings. I leave it alone up till tonight where I give the repair center a call. Turn it on, still rings. Get them to send me... whatever it is they are going to send me.

Turn it on and off again, this time it just freezes without rings. Couple times later and I'm actually loading, then I'm playing an arcade game. It freezes when I try NG2 a couple of times, when I try GTA4. And then the GTA4 load goes through and it doesn't freeze when I get into the world. And now it works fucking fine.

Am I screwed? Did I just fix this fucking thing and now have to wait around for it to break again? What happens if I send it off anyway? It was rrod'in. Somehow I doubt their tests to see if it's busted are more extensive than looking to see if the little almost circle lights up.

My 360 died last week, manufactured in November 2006 and bought in April 2007. UPS guy coming to pick it up today. :(

Mine was manufactured at the same time and it just died yesterday. I resurrected it a couple of times, but this time I think it's for good. :(

Yay. Got my 360 back this morning. New motherboard, new DVD drive, 1 month XBL Gold voucher. Although when I plugged it in quickly before heading to work it couldn't find the network. :\

When I exchanged my RROD'd 360 (using the GS 1 year warranty) for a new one the employee did not check at all, he just took my word for it and handed me a brand new one. If they say it works fine just tell them that it's an intermittent issue.

Your mileage may vary of course....

Hey guys what did you guys end up doing with your 360s that couldn't get fixed? I just got an Elite Falcon through that awesome dell deal last week and now wondering what I can do with my old 360 (of which the GPU died - Microsoft wanted 100 bucks to fix it). Should I sell it on ebay or just throw it out?

My Elite just died. :( Got it at the start of September last year. Stuck on the Xbox 360 startup logo, I turned it off and the screen went green for a moment. Then when I turned it back on.. BAM... 3 red lights.

Just ordered a 60GB. :D

If it died from RROD then look up the RROD fix (I believe the poster HALOFANS) has a few posts on how it worked for him. I know a bunch of people who have followed the guide and revived their boxes, dunno how long they will last but they're still going.
Or you could just pony up the $100 and then ebay the shit Microsoft returns to you.
or smash it to bits and post it on youtube.

Got my 360 back today. Official turnaround time from the day I called until I got it back was 2 weeks.

They sent me a brand new unit to replace my launch unit that I sent in. The manufactured date on it was July 1st, 2008. I'm guessing its one of those Opus units that has the Falcon motherboard minus HDMI.

They also sent me a 3-month free Live card. The first thing I noticed with this new unit is how much quieter it is than my launch unit. I would estimate that its at least 50% quieter than my launch unit, at least with Gears of War since its the only game I've tested it on so far. Its still not PS3 quiet, but its pretty damn close.

I was so pissed with my launch unit breaking down for the 2nd time, I was ready to swear off Xbox forever and planned on selling it, all my games and accessories and becoming a PS3-only gamer, but since they sent me a brand new unit and its a helluva lot quieter, I think I'll keep it.

I believe Gamestop takes broken systems even for trade in. You ask to be sure and hopefully get some credit for it.

While playing the Bionic Commando demo my 360 took it's last breath. I got it in Dec. '05 and it has lasted for this long so I'm not angry.

If you are angry, it'll quickly go away when they send you one with an Opus board and you see how much quieter it is than those manufactured in '05.

I'm debating whether or not to send it in or to just get a new one.

Here's a dumb question but what happens to all the stuff on my hdd? Is it safe from rrod?

That sounds like me after my 2nd system crapped out. But I kept the replacement MS sent out and carried on. When my third one died I said to hell with it. I sold the unit MS sent back and all my games. Now I'm gaming on my old PS2 and saving up for a PS3. It's a shame because I really enjoyed the games on the 360. But enough's enough. I also had problems with the Thomson drive on the original Xbox. I guess I just don't have any luck with the Xbox line.

For Psychotext:
1st 360 Pro - Received Christmas of 06, died early June of 07, RRoD
2nd 360 Pro - Refurb, received late June 07 died Sept 07, RRoD
3rd 360 Pro - New, received Oct 07 died March 08, RRoD

Well, my 360 got the RRoD on Saturday. Got it late June '06 and I never really had any problems with it except a few DREs during Rock Band. Played Rock Band for about 2 hours with my brother that day, turned it off, tried to turn it on about 2 hours later and got the red rings. Got the box today and will be shipping it out tomorrow.

Any word on the usual turnaround on these lately? I know it says wait 2 to 3 weeks, but I'm hoping it comes sooner. I'm in Wisconsin if that matters. I'm hoping it comes back soon so I can get those songs that came out for Rock Band this week for $1 each.

About the only way you'll get it sooner is if you don't wait on them to send you a box and use your own. Its a 3-5 day wait on the box and they use UPS ground, so 3-5 days shipping time just to get a box to you, and then 3-5 days for you to get it to them. They won't have it at the service center long. I checked my status every day and it was only at the service center 1 day before they shipped out a new one. At best, you can shave off 3-5 days if you use your own box, but you're still looking at a week and half at the earliest because of UPS ground.

My 20gb falcon just went. All cables are fine. Purchased 1-18-08. 8 month life-span is pathetic.

I don't even play this thing that often. 5-10 hours a week. Also, I have my AC unit blowing directly on it, so much for that. Calling for a coffin now.
