"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

Thanks for the link--interesting stuff. I wonder if that's the same fix that the pay site offers--they say you only need household tools, which makes me somewhat dubious, honestly. This looks more like what I would expect to have to do.
I would not buy any instructions, there are a number of guides online on how to do it, I even have a PDF that describes in excruciating detail similar instructions to the llama one.
Just do some googling..
here's another:

Mine is dead and I have no way of getting it fixed because ms has no way of taking my monies. They don't take debit card and they don't take money order.

well i finally got around to ringing MS today about my dead POS 360...

the history:

my workmate bought it new Nov 2006

it suffered the RROD in April-May 2008 and was sent in to be fixed, he bought an Elite while it was away and sold me his fixed 360, with new RROD extended warranty til Nov 2009

after about 2 weeks it showed the 1st Unplayable Disc message which i ignored stupidly cause it seemed to be random and i thought was the discs at first..

Then about 1.5 weeks ago it stopped working altogether and wont even turn on - my GF said the lights were flashing red but then it just carked it, so i called MS to get it fixed.

Spent 20 odd minutes on the phone registering the console in my name to only be told at the very end that even though it should be covered under the RROD warranty, because i was the second owner the warranty was now null and void !!
Only option is to spend $132 to send it off and have it fixed FFS!! So after rational reasoning and pleading my case i politely told him what i thought of the 360's, MS's policy etc... but then thought better of it and apologised as hes just drawing a salary.

What pisses me off even more was that this afternoon I was asking my workmate for his details to change the registration over to me and i was a bees dick from asking him to call up and get it fixed, but instead I thought i would do the right thing and get it put in my name.

So a warning to everyone out there thinking of buying 2nd hand consoles - those Microsoft C*NTS will stitch you with the warranty on the RROD !!!!!!!

at least i got about 80-100 hours of use out of it in total!!!!!

If i didnt have so many 360 games and steering wheels etc i'd go get a PS3 just out of spite, MS farkers!!!!!!!!!!

I went through the same thing yesterday - they fed me that same bullshit and it pissed me off. I'm also a 2nd console owner - bought it off a mate at work - he's still there and so was I. BUT, i didn't bother him, I just did it myself.

so, I had the full name of my mate, his email + his phone number and all that and I called with the complete info:

his name
my email
my phone

and told them to change the details on the email/phone and I've got the reply paid thing in my email now.

but yes, microsoft is f*cking full of sh*t. c*nts is the right word

I kept calling up til I got a female phone person because the 1st douchebag (male) did what you did to me. Just make it clear there as a miscommunication on the phone.

HERES WHAT YOU SHOULD TRY

1.Get the account name changed back to owner 1.

2. pretend to be owner 1.

and go from there

as far as I was concerned, their spiel on the owner thing is absolute nonsence. You can just say your console died and your out of the country and you got a mate to call up and now its all messed up. speak nicely (get a female) and all the best.

Is anyone else aware of the MS first owner red ring policy?

I managed to get around their douchbaggeryness by making sure I filled in the gaps on their "database" and convinced them to repair my red ring for free - that I was owner one. Its bloody retarded. I have the receipts for the xbox. I cannot believe they tried to deny me service. The guys on their hotline are also largely incoherent cuecard reading monkeys.

This is the 2nd time this consoles redringed.

Anybody know what the fuck is wrong with the service website? My 360 broke six days ago and that site (and support) still won't let me report it. I try and register my SN and it just goes to a "There was an error" page. For six days.

How long does it take for UPS to update the tracking information? MS repaired the console and said that they sent it to UPS to be sent back to me but when I put the tracking number in it says "Billing Information received" and has been like that since this past Saturday.

Do UPS work weekends?

Well, my friend's 360 died yesterday..
Completely out of nowhere..

He played it late in Friday, to download/play the Fable II Pub Games.
Didn't used it on Saturday..
Yesterday (Sunday), he turned it on..to play some Halo 3 with us....but it crashed, showing some checkered-like pattern on screen..and then the famous red lights..

When he was moving it, to see if for some reason it was some cable or something, he felt/heard something inside as if something fell inside the unit.

He got it, (near)exactly one year ago (receipts says August 31, 2007)..

He's checking around, to see what he can do..sicne he got an extended warraty (2 years), ..but with CompUSA, before they went bankrupt....and they no longer sell videogames.

Check the warranty brochure. there should eb a service number call it. Often the warranty is a 3rd party, which should not be effected by Compusa.

UPS does not work weekends.
The outbound tracking waybill will show shipping activity once the console has hit the first UPS distribution center.
That's about it. Don't hesitate to give Xbox support a call if you don't see any movement by the end of Wednesday.

Ah bugger, whilst playing braid the screen left red and green hues all over the place. It does on the dash board as well. I assume this is the GPU giving up the ghost and of course this not covered in the red ring warrenty is it! Oh well Xbox number 5 it looks like its had it. Anyone know the cost of repair in the UK?

It's the GPU failing, which will eventually lead to the RROD. You could probably claim that you're seeing the RROD now intermittently and also seeing graphical glitches and they'd repair it.

When the GPU finally fails completely it will display the RROD (which occurs for a bunch of different hardware failures, excluding DVD drive failure)

I got the RROD last Sunday. Unplugged all the cables, waited a couple of hours... still RROD. Wraped it in a towel for a while and let it cool. Turned it on and it started to work!

I then packed it up and sold it back to Gamestop.

You are part of the problem

That was the smart decision.

Microsoft sent out a new (well, new or repaired) 360 to me today, after the replacement I got from them 2 months ago finally stopped reading DVDs. It took it's time getting there. Thankfully, I had a 3 month warranty when they sent me a new system, so they just fixed it for free. Took them about...a week and a half after me sending it to them for them to replace it, which I really can't bitch about.

sent it out yesterday around lunch. Apparently its on its way back now. I wonder if I'll get anything a refurb or my old console. The one day turnaround is kind of amazing.

My launch 360 just red ringed on me, am i still covered for free service (im in canada if that matters), or should i just go buy an Elite on the 7th ?

3RL/RROD issues are still covered until November 22nd for launch consoles. No harm in pursuing an exchange.

pursuing an exchange with microsoft right? cause i know i dont have my receipt anymore, and i doubt FutureShop would help me at all :P

My 360 (9/17/2006 manufacture date) finally got 3 red rings yesterday while playing a demo. They're going to give me a free repair, hope it comes back with HDMI. :D

Well I got mine back, and they ended up sending a new unit manufactured in June 2008. No HDMI, but I'm impressed since it was all free and it was a pretty fast turnaround.

well i put in for my repair from Microsoft, then i realized i highly doubt i will get another Original Core looking unit, i loved my white disc tray :(

I got my 360 back. Do they do anything to all the repairs? I heard someone mention they put in new motherboards in there. Is that for all of them? I know in the past they used to put in these clamp heatsink things.

Mine came back with a letter saying they'd replaced the motherboard.

The warranty sticker they put over the console to stop you opening it and voiding the warranty is pathetic. I could get it off easy if I really wanted to. :lol

My letter makes no mention of a replaced motherboard. Damn. I hope this one lasts at least five years.

This is so ridiculous that I think five years is a long time for this console when my Saturn still plays games fine after 10 years...

My Premium 360 just got the 3 red lights after suffering two summers in the blistering sun by my window.

I've never had a 360 die on me, so what now? I call MS and wait for a box...?

Edit: Before getting the red lights, it kept freezing at the Xbox ball thing. After letting it sit for a bit, I tried turning it on again and it's back at freezing instead of giving me the 3 lights. If I tell MS I have the 3 red lights and it turns out I don't, will they ship my 360 back unrepaired? The manufacture date is 9-14-06 if that makes a difference.

Well, my launch system just died again. Yeah, I know, I'm lucky it lasted this long. It RROD'd almost 2 years ago, and they fixed it and sent me the same box back, luckily. Started getting intermittent lock ups followed by RROD with a reboot. Getting the generic 0102 (hardware failure) diagnostic code on the RROD. Quick question: is it better to call 1800MYXBOX to request repair or to use the online repair request? What typically gets you faster service (in the US, specifically)?

edit: Nevermind, just called it in. Can't believe you have to provide your own shipping box now...

At this point, I'm ready to swap out for an arcade unit after the price drop and I'll trade in my current box (or the refurb they'll most likely send me) to grab a 60GB starter pack.

My 360 no longer reads DVD's. It RROD'd last December, and the Xbox I got back had the loudest DVD drive I've ever heard. Over the last year I used to get intermittent "Unplayable Disk" errors, but now nothing plays. I called MS and they said it's not under warranty and it's going to cost $99 to get it fixed. If I can't get it fixed for free, I'm done with 360 this gen.

Today is 3rd week since I called for a repair. I called 8/9. Never got my box. I don't really mind, I'm about to start school and I need to focus but am I going to have to call to tell them and stuff? its really a hassle..

Ugh I'm so confused... Is it possible I'm supposed to ship my 360 in my own box? I got an email from MS with a printable shipping label or something. When my friend had to send his in, he didn't get anything like that and everything was done through Purolator (UPS for me). I checked the tracking number and it says the package is going to Toronto. One, I don't live there and two, the weight is supposedly 1.9kg. If it's an empty box, how is it 1.9kg? Right now I'm thinking either the box is going there and then being shipped to me, or I'm supposed to ship it there in my own box and print out the label.

Thanks to anyone who can clarify this for me.

One of my friends and I went halfsies on a refurbished 20gb Pro, but we found out that the damn thing scratches discs up during normal operation. We did spring for the two year warranty, but without an instruction manual or anything, I'm not sure what the procedure is for getting the Xbox replaced. Can refurbs be RMA'd, or do we have to return it to the store? It's a 30-45 minute drive into the city, so I'd much rather just mail the console out if it's at all possible.

I'm not holding my breath on Microsoft reimbursing us for the scratched up game, but is there a website where I can find Microsoft's policy on what to do with a console that's still under the extended warranty?

MSFT's customer service is the worse of any I've ever encountered.... 6 months later I still have a broken 360 with an RMA# and no address to send it to thanks to them hiring foreigners that English isn't their native language...

It's also the reason I bought a PS3 last week :D

E 68 (hard drive error) on 360... unplugged the HDD and plugged it back in. unit seems to run fine, but my profile is completely wasted. everyone else's (including friends) on the system seems to be fine.

if i use up my PRP on it @ best buy, is there a way to recover those saves off of the HDD?

The label is for you to print out and affix to your own box with your 360 inside. The weight is their guess on how much it should weigh with only the 360 inside. The address it's going to is probably the closest repair center from your location. Just find a small box, put some padding around your 360 and send it off (I think you also write your repair number on a sheet of paper and tape it to your xbox so they know who it came from - the UPS label probably also lists this number).

My Elite red ringed yesterday. I've lost count how many 360s this is now, 6 probably. I hadn't really been playing it much, so it's not that big of an inconvenience to me.

Does MS still ship coffins to you, or do you have to provide your own box? If the latter, I'll just wait till Xmas break to send this in. Too much hassle right now.

6? Goddamn. How much longer are you going to put up with the 360? If it was me, I'd probably just give up and move on.

The $99 is the cost of repair and 1 year warranty.

My 360 threw a fit on its way out! Last night it chewed up my copies of Tales of Vesperia, Too Human and Bioshock then froze. I restarted it to a RROD. I wanna kick the little shit.

t first 360 dies 8 months ago since it was an early production model, softer my RROD experience i went out and bought the re-designed interior version with HDMI hoping everything would work perfect, i guess not! i was playing PGR4, the screen froze, rebooted, same thing happened again 3rd time my 360 splash screen got pixelated and distorted and the firs thing that came to mind was UH-OH!!!". i turned off the system to cool down, then bam, the next day a red red was rotating around the green power light! :( and from that instant that my 360 is "RIP".....and that's the second one!

WTF is with MS? are they doing this on purpose? why isn't the new internal helping? to buy more systems? i'm fed up of this even though I'll miss PGR4 and GW2, but screw im not wasting money on shit hardware, specially one were i spend over $1000 in micro transactions!

i guess i'll be tossing my 360 away and focus on the PS3 and Wiii since i live in the UAE and repairing by sending it to the U.S would be too much trouble!

edit: curious, which 360 don't have the RROD problems? is there a certain built date or a serial number?

If only there was such a thing. Right now, every 360 has the chance of breaking down sooner or later.

The build quality is getting better, but not enough to prevent 360s from failing.

At this rate, it's probably best to focus your attention on the PS3/Wii and wait in the hope that MS fixes the 360, if they ever will.

I know the feeling, my 360 died for the second time just a couple weeks ago with the E74 error. I don't want to send it into MS for a 100 dollar repair fee for something that should not be happening in the first place let alone a console that breaks twice. I am just venting, I know. But really, it's just rediculous, I have not had any problems with any consoles that I've had till the 360, and I have been gaming since the early NES days. And it sucks because I love the 360, it just makes me angry for have to pay for something that is a result of poor hardware.

My X-box 360 died after eight months of use, RRod in the end of June/08. The funny thing is that my old video games still works, my PSX, PS2(Slim), SNES, Mega Drive, Master System and even my one million years old Atari console still works, seriously.

I’m only going to repair the X-Box 360 because there are too many good exclusive games coming for it. And I love Half-Life 2 (Orange Box). :D

remove ur HDD and u r fine.

ur HDD is dead. thats all

oh sh!t....are you saying that all my save game data, online transactions purchases are wiped? :( ...please tell me that i could re-downloaded them when i logging using my screen name! i don't mind re-downloading....what my save game data progress.....NOOOOO!!!!!

EDIt: i just tried it and removed the 360 HDD, same problem, the consoles turns on without a screen on the TV and i get 3 constant blinking lights! so is this an HDD problem like you stated?(which i doubt) or did my 360 officially RRODed? :(
