"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

Don't want to start a new thread - hoping someone in here can provide me with some guidance.

I have a launch system. It RROD'd on me, and I got it fixed (out of warranty by a few months, oh well). No problems there. It works fine. Makes a butt-load of noise, but it's functional. This is more a matter of preference.

I want to run my 360 over HDMI (I currently do 1080p over the VGA input. I know, I know...), but, alas, there's not HDMI happening on my launch system. I'm thinking about picking up an arcade unit and just slapping the HDD from my old system on it. My question: will that work? (I don't care about upping the size of the HDD - 20gb is good for me.)

Is there any info saved on the system itself, or is everything stored on the HDD? Again, it's just my preference. (I just want fewer cables and everything running over HDMI.)

Yes everything will work just fine. Everything is stored on the HDD unless you had any saves on say a memory unit of any kind.

Has anyone here tried the Penny fix ?

I'm thinking about trying it on my son's 360. What have I got to lose 8 cents? The warranty is already voided.

My nearly two year old Falcon just bit the dust with an E74 error about 3-4 hours into Borderlands. It started with pink and purple graphical artifacts, spurring me to reboot, which would only lead to a black error screen. I mailed it via UPS today to the Texas facility from SoCal, any idea on the typical turnaround time? I really wanna play more Borderlands.

Your Xbox called me, he asked me what has he done to you.

Seriously, X-Clamp it, it's the best method atm.

My little brothers 2006 model died on me at the wkend, rrod.

Did not get a change to play Forza.

I have pre-ordered the CODMW2 super elite so I have my own 360

Anyway I did not see any mention when ordering the service that msft send you a box for shipping? Is this not the case anymore? (UK)?

Damn, now I'm part of the club - just got the 3 rings today. I bought my 360 Pro in April 2006 so its out of warranty. Guess I will buy an Arcade since I have the 120 gb drive already. Now to figure out what to do with the old one...

If anyone's still keeping track (haven't been in the thread in a long time), mine just died for the 3rd time. It was a launch model, but they replaced the MB when I sent it in for repair back in early 2007 when MS extended the warranty (it died in August 2006).

The 2nd "death" (can't remember if I posted about it) was a very weird problem: the laser lens started going outside the disc radius in order to check for the disc, which I'm convinced was caused by a system update. I fixed that by physically blocking the lens from moving out that far, and can't believe it worked. But it's been working like that since mid-2007.

This time, the disc motor can't seem to spin up the disc any more. The motor's not broken; it spins a little bit, but the spindle seems to be giving too much resistance. I spun it around by hand a bit to loosen it up, and it worked for the rest of last night, but now it's not spinning again. Maybe it just needs some WD-40...

my drive died last night. Just downloaded Ballard of Gay Tony and then put in GTA IV. My 360 makes some loud noises and nothing happens. Try Forza 3 and few other games and I see the open tray message on my Dashboard.

Proper pissed as I am worried now I am gonna miss the Modern Warfare 2 launch. I am still in warranty so can send it back to MS but I am gonna try and get it swapped over in the shop I purchased it from as it is only an 8 month old arcade machine.

I'm getting really bad graphical glitches on my 360. In Forza 3 half of the geometry just has odd black stuff over it, and in Borderlands there's a ridiculously annoying red grain over all of the screen.

I realise my 360 is dying - but how long will it take? I don't want to put up with shitty graphical glitches for weeks and weeks until it decides to pack up. I'd rather it died now so I could send it back and what have you.

Anyone had this happen to them?

Edit: :lol My girlfriend suggested I turn it on and off lots to "encourage" an E74 error and it worked. Haha. At least now I can send it back.

Playing NBA 2k10 and got the RROD.....again. Number 3 for me. Fucking hate Microsoft man. This
some bullshit. At least I have my backup 360 until the new one come in.

There I am now part of this not very exclusive club :lol
Euroland Launch day 360 (2/12/2005) so I can't really complain.

Damn things were going pretty well in Forza 3.

My Xbox 360 from 3 years ago is finally freezing up and getting random RROD.

I couldn't take it anymore and bought an arcade version from Amazon.com

(I figure after selling the RROD one and the extra controller, I am barely paying $120 or so.)

Two questions:

I am pretty much guaranteed to get the Jasper these days right?

If I put the hard drive on from my Xbox Pro, it will pretty much work the same with my gamer tag and score saved?

Second question yes. First question, being that it is from Amazon I would say Jasper is probable.

my 1yr old falcon died 2 weeks ago as i posted in this thread. They sent me back a different console from a different location today, a Jasper.

I can confirm they are sending out jaspers in exchange for the old systems now, at least to some people.

The label on the back has a service date, but more importantly the power adapter is differnt and says "12v 12, 1a"

Yeah, don't do that. X-clamp should do the trick for a while. If you really want to do it right you need a heatgun and an IR thermometer.

I have lost the ability to modify my location and Bio.

Does this come via a ban or something I don't know about? I can only edit my motto. :lol

Yes I know it isn't a broken Xbox issue but where else was I gonna post this?

I see a lot of people on craigslist advertising RROD repair. Are these services reliable?

Putting my 360 in a box and shipping it to MS never sat right with me.

Hey I just read on wikipedia ;

A E74 error is when the lower-right quadrant of the ring piece indicator flashes red and displays an error message in multiple languages: "E74 System Error. Contact Xbox Customer Support". The error is caused when there's a video problem, because the Xbox 360's hardware scaler chip is damaged.[71] As of April 14, 2009, the E74 error is now covered by the three-year extended warranty, and customers who previously paid Microsoft for out-of-warranty service to correct the E74 error will receive a refund.

I sent it for repair in January of 2009 hence 3 months before, what's the status of my warranty then? What proof do I have that I sent them my xbox? I'm clueless here..

If you paid for it, you should have automatically got a refund cheque some time ago... as for proving it, I guess the only thing you could do is send them a copy of your bank / credit card statement (as appropriate).

No, I didn't pay for it. My concern is to know wether my warranty has gone from 2 years to 3 years.

There's no static warranty adjustment here. Essentially, you're covered for your first year of ownership for all general hardware failures and for an additional two years as far as 3RL and 1RL E74 issues are concerned.

You can qualify your current manufacturer's warranty status at any time by going to support.xbox.com and looking up your registered consoles.

Even if you're now listed as "out of warranty" for general issues (aka the Standard Warranty), the coverage for 3RL and 1RL E74 issues will be automatically tabulated against your registration record and a free repair will be offered to you should it be necessary to repair your console again.

Thank you.

Sorry I forgot to say I was from Europe. I think the 360 is warranted 2 years here. Also, that support thing has always been a mess for me. I tried to register my xbox several times over the past months but it always says something in the lines of "an error occured"

Anybody from Europe managed to register their console without calling the -very competent- support team?

my brothers 360 just RROD for the 3rd time.

He bought it around launch time.

Do you think he is still under warranty?

Or how much does it cost to get it fixed?

Im wondering this too. I bought a (refurbed) X360 Elite from ebay, it RRODed, got a replacement, and then the guy disappeared, it just recently RRODed and the official warranty is over.

Ive been using the "towel trick" for the past couple of weeks to keep it alive, but its lifespan each time seems to be getting shorter.

Anyone know how much this is going to cost me to get it repaired?

EDIT: I went to the repair section under the website. It says its going to cost me 100$ to have it fixed.

WTF. Thats fucking insane. A faulty product gets shipped, with a definite fail date no matter what and mine HAPPENS to fail after the warranty, and now I have to shell 100$ for the company to get it right?

Insane.

You can buy a new one at Wal-Mart for $200, and it comes with an $100 gift card. There's a thread for it somewhere. Don't pay to fix the broken one, sell it on craigslist as parts-only for a little $$.

Arg, Left 4 Dead 2 Demo was running like shit, so I turned my xbox off. I turned it back on a few minutes later and my second RRoD greats me :(

The xbox website where I am submitting my repair says I am out of warranty, but it looks as though the repair is free? Does it have something to do with the fact that my first RRoD got repaired about 2 years ago?

A week before MW2... Why oh Why, why did you have to die!

My 360 just red ringed. Error code 0110 (Memory overheating/Memory Error). =[

I can still use a 3 year warranty on my 360 through Microsoft I found out.. My elite was manufactured back in 2007. The one problem is that I bought it off Craigslist like a year ago..

I looked closely at the console today and noticed that where the 360 Key opening parts are you can tell it was opened by a screwdriver.. The warranty sticker is also removed.. The idiot owner before me tried fixing it himself.. Ugh.

So.. Now im screwed cause I can't send it back to MS. Thankfully I may know where to go to get it fixed but ugh.. :(

But I have an elite right now, and I really like the blackness :( thats the main reason I bought it.

If I were to sell it would I JUST sell the xbox? Would I keep my 120gb HD (and all my saves ect.) with it?

Or even easier is the Wal-Mart deal for elites?

So, my xbox died, but there are no red lights. Here's what happened:
I boot it up, everything is fine, I'm on my NXE, I navigate over to "My Movies" drill down, and I'm browsing up and down the list. My tv audio makes a quick screechy blip, and the xbox freezes up. I wait a few moments and the screen gets all glitched, and then clears up, and then glitched, repeated etc.

So I turn it off. Turn it back on from the controller. Nothing on screen (like my AV cables aren't even plugged in) but the power light on the xbox comes on. My controller endlessly searches for the xbox but never connects.

Off and back on this time from the console power button. The video freezes on what is probably the 3rd of 4th frame of that intro bootup video of the silver globe thing. It's very giltched looking this time no bouncing back and forth, just glitched and frozen. The controller won't connect to the system.

After that, no matter how I turned it back in it was like before with nothing on the screen, no red lights, just 1 power light, no circle of lights lit up at all (controller wont connect)... just the small power light and nothing.
Also the drive makes kind of a short vibrationy sound like "grrrrrnt" at each power on.

Is this a RROD without th Red? (I.E. is it covered under RROD warranty?)

EDIT - I should probably note this was the first time (I think unless my wife turned it on earlier) it was even turned on that day, and it was on for all of 60 seconds before it froze/crashed the first time. So overheating seems highly unlikely.

Technically, no. It's not covered under the warranty without the error indicator.

That said, many send their consoles in with similar symptoms (as RRoD / E74) and have no issues getting them repaired. Of course, no guarantee that'll work for you.

I finally got my 360 back today but what the fuck is going on? I put my HDD back in and it still wants me to set up the 360, ok, so I do it, then it wants me to recover my gamertag. I do it and it says I need a storage device. Why isn't it detecting my hard drive? :|

My 360 recently died with an E74 error. I got it in December 05 and it red ringed and was sent in to MS in 07 under the 3 year RROD coverage. It's out of warranty, right, sending it in didn't reset the warranty, did it? And paying for a repair now wouldn't reset the warranty, would it? Cause I'm thinking my smartest move right now is the Walmart $100 gift card deal on an Arcade tomorrow.

That would be, although depending on store size you may want to get in line a little early.

My system is freezing up now on separate games. Funny thing is, I just gave it to my brother for an extended loan since I no longer play it and this happens to me for the first time ever. How do I find out if I'm covered? Call Microsoft?

Sent back on 10/26, got back today. New faceplate and free 1 month of Live.

I suppose the video failure isn't covered by the warranty, maybe that can be tried for that too. What happens if they can't get it RROD or E74, they force you to purchase the repair?
Video failure
In mid 2007, technology and gaming blogs began reporting about new problems with the Xbox 360 losing video output.[69][70] The problems are characterized by a blank, staticky, or grayscale video output with a proper functioning audio output and no flashing red lights on the console. The complete video failure is sometimes preceded by other graphical glitches such as an irregular saturation of green and/or red colors.[citation needed]

They can't force anything, they'd just return your box.

I've only seen this happen once though (from info in this thread), and that was because it was just a drive playing up rather than any stability issues.

My 360 died today. Got the RROD. it survived once but then just froze on L4D2. I already requested to get it shipped to microsoft for repair. Should be nice to just give me a new system with 120GB HDD :lol.

My buddy is a Call of Duty freak, he's more psyched for MW2 than anyone I know. He got two red lights last night. It's sad how that works out sometimes.

Is my 360 finished?

I started getting an overly green hue in certain environmental areas while playing Dragon Age Origins on Sunday. I assumed it was a game glitch until I hit the guide button and saw the green hue there too. After I finished the play session, I rebooted to see if that would fix the issue and it did.

I finally got back to playing Monday night. After the game environment loaded up, soon after the screen was covered in an overwhelming red hue (like a filter being overlaid on top of EVERYTHING). It then shifted back to the green hue of yesterday and I proceeded to play for ~2 hours before deciding to stop. I tried to reboot the system again and a picture wouldn't show up anymore, though I can still hear dashboard sounds.

The GPU is fucked, isn't it? I've had the system since April 2006, so I'm out warranty coverage. Any way I can fix this myself or am I gonna have to shell out for a new system?

I dunno, a few months ago I would have assumed it was on its way out, but I've been getting system-wide graphics problems for nearly four months now and my 360 is still going strong. I'm seeing pink/green/blue grids and dithering green dots around the corners of my screen, been seeing explosions in some games appear only as colored blocks and so on and so forth. Resetting the console fixes the issue for me, maybe you'll also be that lucky? Not that it's ideal having to reset your console because of a hardware fault, but maybe it's still got some life in it.

Oh shit, didn't catch that it won't display at all now. Are you not getting any error lights?
