Anyone else having a problem with the new "wheel" cases?

In the last few days I picked up Big Air: Stoked, Red Faction, and received Assassin's Creed 2 for Xmas. Red Faction works fine, the other 2 are both "wheel" cases and I am getting "unreadable" errors or the console is freezing.

yay mine just kicked the bucket...

2 years and 2 months old, halo 3 model... here´s to hoping for a retrevial before Bayonetta comes out...

So, my early 2006 purchased 360 just got hit with the 3 red lights. The online repair wizard wants to charge me 99 bucks to get it fixed. Am I screwed, or is there a chance they will waive the fee if I give them a call?

I just received a refurbished 360 (my 2nd death :[ ) and was wondering was exactly microsoft does to "fix" the e74 errors? What makes the refurbished ones more reliable, or are they just as likely to die

Nothing

Yes

so basically they keep sending back the flawed hardware?

I love my 360 to death but it just seems that replacing it with whatever the news motherboard revision just seems cheaper than this prolonging of the inevitable

Also is it normal for refurbished consoles so be so loud? The fans just seem a lot louder than I remember.

Define "free". The failure rates on Jasper models appear to be nothing like other 360s... so far.

by free i mean a acceptable rate of failure... i don't know what's acceptable, but something under 5% of failure is a good number.

That's how it appears, yes.
Looks like this will be a yearly ritual then. They one they sent back runs a bit hotter than my old one so its only a ticking time bomb :(. It just hard to enjoy gaming when u have to send ur system back so often.

Just give me a jasper damn it!

Fuck you microsoft!

They are saying mine is out of warranty can't find receipt atm....5 weeks past the 3 year mark is my recollection, I really gotta find the receipt to verify its 3years 5weeks or 2 years and 5weeks old. bought it Black Friday had the Forza2/Marvel Alliance bundle. 20gig HDD non-elite version.

3 red rings, during 1vs100 second question Tuesday 12-29-09 I had just turned it on around 5:45ish PM PST to get in on 6pm live showing.....whatever stupid river that flows out of Columbia flows into what body of water! Fuck you! I never saw the answer!

*Raging raging raging drooling spitttle*

Seriously, FUCK MICROSOFT!

I paid for the extended warranty when I got my Xbox, February '08. I got the 3 red lights last year, right about Christmas and sent it in to get fixed. Fast forward to this Christmas and my DVD drive started not reading some games, slowly but surely it stopped reading all of my games. So I went on line to check our my repair options, and noticed that they said my warranty is expired and the repair would cost $99.00. I called them up to ask about my extended warranty and they had no record of it. I went into my file and grabbed my service contract, and gave them all of the info on it, and they still had no record of it. So I escalated to a manager, once again, no record of my warranty or previously repairing my console. 3 more escalations, and finally someone was able to find my warranty and update my account. I have been arguing with them for 3 days. They still have no record that they repaired my console last year. My favorite line of the whole dialogue was when this manager called me to tell me that my account has been adjusted to reflect that my warranty is valid until 2011. She then asked if I paid for a 1 year warranty. I asked her, when was my warranty effective, she responded "February 2009", I then asked her when it expires, she responded "February 2011". The next question was "how many years is that?" She had no answer.

Their level of service is soo unbelievably bad, I was shocked. What good is having a Microsoft service contract number when their own support has no way of looking it up.

So anyway, my Xbox is starting to do some weird stuff. I've mostly been using it for Netflix lately, and it's been... odd. Namely, sometimes the menus lag really badly, and sometimes it becomes completely unresponsive. The weirdest thing however is when I power down the system it doesn't power down. It just stays there. Is it dying? I've honestly lost count of how many times it's died; I don't know if I can take it again. I've also got a dead PS3 sitting there because I can't afford to repair it.

GAHHHHHHHHHHHHH PLEASE DON'T BE DYING

God damn it, I'm getting the Open Tray error. I really don't want to give microsoft $100 to fix their fuck up.

God fucking damn it.

In the last 2 months, I've got the E74 error three times. It's just died again - this will be the fourth time I've sent it back to the insurance company that I got my cover with when I bought the 3 year cover with Argos.

It's ridiculous. When they "fix" it, it never lasts for more than 2 weeks before I start to see obscene graphical glitches, and ultimately that red light. I can't keep sending it back like this.

I'm going to nag and nag them to just REPLACE it for me, but I don't fancy my chances. I love my 360, but this is fucking ridiculous. If they won't replace it, I may honestly have to just save up and buy a new replacement one, as clearly something inside my console is totally fucked.

:(

Anyone else had this problem?

Viva Pinata killed my 360 too. It was my wife's 6 hour sessions that did it in.

Fucking shit. My old 360 (got it Christmas 2007 and never had one problem with it) burned in a fire. Got a new 360 (Modern Warfare 2 limited edition) for Christmas TWO FUCKING WEEKS AGO and it just red ringed. Thanks Microsoft. How is that even possible? All I did was move it to a new room.

Given you said you recently moved it, the chances are that one of your cables isn't in properly (I've done it myself). Try disconnecting everything (including the PSU from the wall) and reconnecting everything. Can't hurt.

So I think my disc drive is dead. It can open up fine via the button or xbox menu, but when you put a disc in it to read it just clicks two times (like it's trying to read it) then stops. I was wondering why my 360 was so quiet when I put it on. :lol Anyone have any clue on how to fix it, or if it's worth fixing?

edit: okay, it pulled a jesus christ and is back alive. I assume this means it's dying soon and I should replace it, right?

doubleedit: How much would a elite be at gamestop? Console / wires only?

tripleedit: Does the arcade have an hdmi port?

Wow... I swear I did this last night as I thought this would be the solution, and it still red ringed. Tried it again today and it worked. Thanks. :D

I have had 2 different xbox's do this to me.

Fucking BULLSHIT!

So I got a new 360 for Christmas. It's an Elite and a Jasper model, but i am deathly afraid of this motherfucking breaking on me.

Do you guys have any tips to prolong its life? I'm going to try and keep it in a dust-free, well ventilated part of my dorm room, but is there really anything else I can do?

Keep it horizontal and in an open area.

I'm not sure if it helps but installing games more often surely couldn't hurt.

The best suggestion is giving it a minute or two on the dashboard before you turn it off (after playing a game). Internal temperatures rocket when the fans are turned off so it's best to give it a little time to cool.

Honestly, if you guys are getting disc read errors/open tray. Fix it yourself, I've had this problem several times, usually had to adjust the POT settings on the drive then buy a new lens for like $10 on ebay. MS charging $100 to fix this problem is bullshit.

Oh that's a really interesting idea, one I haven't thought of before. Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

Also, never move a 360 when it is hot. Let it cool down first. Both of my RRODs occurred soon after I moved my 360. I think that moving it may flex the motherboard, which can break the solder under the processor or GPU.

Mine died 2 days ago.

The best buy extended warranty ran out a month ago since it was an Xmas present 2 years ago.

On chapter 12 of Bayonetta it froze and 4 vertical columns of dotted lines went on the screen. Turned off, then back on and 3 red rings.

I had it vertical the whole time, installed every game to the HDD once the option was available.

Will be getting it fixed locally this week hopefully.

Console finally died today :(

Bought it August '07 and I hardly play games so I would say about 150 hours total in a span of 2.5 years.

Just friggin great too, since Zonda R(a car I've been wanting since the game came out) is finally available in Forza 3 so I bought the DLC, bought the car and took it for a test drive and the system goes kaput >:|

And Mass Effect 2 is around the corner. FML

My console red-ringed a couple of days ago. It was from January 2006. I ain't got the money to buy a new one right away, so no MW2 for me for a while.

And down goes Elite #2.

E74 Error on a launch Elite (Zephyr?) that I picked up at Halo 3 launch for my brother. Surprised it lasted as long as it did. My personal Elite died last September of an E74 error the day the Forza 3 demo came out. :lol

Oh well, time to go through the motions of getting this thing fixed, luckily it was still within the 3 years for RRoD/E74 errors.

Piece of crap console.

wow... second time around really does make you cold/bitter to the whole thing. I went nuts when my first console died. this time, not much of a reaction at all.

Bought mine in... I think September of 08, worked perfectly for me until about a week ago, suddenly it won't read any discs. I thought maybe the lens was dirty, as it was reading movie DVDs okay but not game DVDs, until suddenly that stopped too. Put in a disc, it spins for a minute or two saying "reading" before just changing to "Open Tray".

I have GOLD until the end of the month, but I'd been told that I might want to try claiming RROD? Worst case scenario I pay the 99.99 I'm prepared to pay, best case scenario they don't check and they fix their faulty hardware for me, right?

Also, same source told me they just mail shipping labels now? Guess I need to figure out where to get a box to put it in- it's not like I'm worried it'll break, heh.

1.-how do I know If I'm getting a Jasper Unit?

2.-is there any rumor about a slimmer 360?

3.-is there any pricedrop rumor for 360?

I want to buy one in about 2 months and want tobe sure about everything.
My advice is that if you haven't already invested in a 360, spare yourself the headaches and don't bother. This system has got to be the worst built comsumer electronics product ever created. It has to be. It's too late for me, as I have invested so much already. But there are other alternatives out there for you.

Mine died last week for the 2nd and final time. Playing Forza 3 very heavily. Got the 3 red lights but it came out of it. Did it 3 times. Finally wouldn't turn on. Out of warranty I pulled it apart and replaced the clamps with bolts and screws. Yeah fucked that up because it wont' turn on or anything after that. So bought the Arcade model. Back in business.

You'd have a point if people were buying launch models today, but just how many recent models have you seen reported as dying here? (Here's a hint... next to none)

You don't know how right I hope you are. I just bought a new Elite after I RRoD'd for the eight (8th) time on three different 360 consoles. I hope after five years this multi-billion dollar company finally understands how to manufacture their own product. Like I said, I love the system, but damn.

By the way, if anyone is interested in a brand new 120 gig HDD (the spare from my new Elite), PM me. I'll also post this in the buy sell thread.

Now watch as you become part of the x% minority... :lol

...that said, to have 8 die on you so far you must be pretty fucked for luck already, so I'm almost expecting it!

Falcon Pro, MFR date 2007-11-21... E74 out of nowhere.

Used very heavily for the first year, then not much at all the second. Of course my Best Buy extended warranty (which I never buy under any other circumstance) expired less than a month ago.

Guess my Jasper Arcade is going to be on more than MCE duty for a few weeks.

Damn,
my second xbox died on me,
first my old one died just out of waranty.
So I decided to buy a new model (hdmi),
but now that one's gone as well (died after rockband 2 kept locking up).

Here's a question for the hardware gurus:

When I get my repaired Falcon back, would it be better to use that as my living room MCE and move my Jasper arcade over to game room duty?

Whichever 360 is in the living room is going to spend the vast majority of its time runnig MCE, Netflix, and Last.fm. I'm guessing those don't strain the hardware quite as much, and I may get some more life out of my repair that way.

Fantastic, my 360 Elite dies two days before Mass Effect 2 comes out.

While I've already requested a repair, should I just pony up and grab a new Arcade?

My launch Elite unit just died today after putting Mass Effect in. Fucking pissed. I knew I should have gotten the Steam version.
