"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

For the last two days I have been completely unable to log in to Xbox Live. Well, I will log in, but then the first three blades just show an icon of the 360 with dots rotating around it for an hour or so until I get frustrated and turn it off. Is this just Live taking a major hit for the holidays, or symptoms of a red ring to come?
Same thing is happening to me. I would also like to know if it is Live or if my system is about to die.

Same thing happened here. So It's not your system.

I'm affraid mine might die again soon though. I bought COD4 yesterday, booted it up and all the smoke effects were blue? Then I turned off my system turned it on again and the screen was flickering with weird dots all over the place. Turned it off, turned it one... everything was fine. Played COD4 for two days without problems and it such an awesome game that I don't want my Xbox360 to die for the third time on me now!

I got a Falcon Elite to replace my 8th broken Xbox 360 just before Christmas. The drive makes a nasty noise in this thing since the first time I turned it on. Right after I turn it on, I hear a grinding-like noise (during boot). Playing games and DVDs has been fine so far, but the drive is a bit louder than previous 360's I've had. Wonder how long this one will last...

I don't know the exact details, but a friend of mine, who owns almost every console out there, told me today that he also got the RROD. He said he was playing an old X-Box game, and while he was downloading a patch for this, shazam, RROD.

:(

I called them last night and told them that I've been getting the three red rings. So when they get it to their repair center, plug it in, and see the E74 error I should be safe? I don't want to receive a call from Microsoft later saying I owe them $100 because my problem was not covered under warranty.
You won't be charged. People who modded their 360s got theirs returned free of charge even though they were opened.

No repairs for them though.

Just tell those high school Indians how it's done.

Actually most people who sent modded systems got theirs repaired\exchanged just fine as long as they didn't leave big scratch marks on the back of the case.

Looks like my trusty launch Japanese 360 will soon be on its way to whatever heaven or hell good consoles go when they die :(
It's been my primary 360 (also have a PAL, but I don't trust that one) for more than 2 years and never had a single problem with it until today.
I started playing Lost Odyssey and everything was fine:
lodeath1.jpg

And then during a cutscene this is what happened:
lodeath2.jpg

And then everything was like this:
lodeath3.jpg

When rebooting the Xbox wasn't outputting anything my TV could display anymore (it detected something, only said it wasn't able to display it). After 30 minutes or so I had a picture again, but after a few seconds it became garbled again.

Another one bites the dust :(

Are systems in stock at stores right now void of this problem?? Are Elite systems more reliable than new Pro systems?
It's too early to say for sure, but so far there has been very little report of Falcon 360s being defective. All recent systems should be equal, pro or elites.

so when they replace your console, is it a new unit or a refurbished one?

thanks!

i had the ring of death for two days, then started it up again today and it worked. i'm worried.

That is exactly what happened with my launch unit a week or so ago, except my picture never came back (just had a bunch of garbled lines).

I think this is becoming the new RRoD.

Anyway MS says this problem isn't covered in the 3 year warrenty.

Another refurbed piece of shit thats gonna break. Its not uncommon for the replacement to break the same day you receive it.

My launch 360 just rrod'd me. Boo fuck shit piss. Oh well.

Console number 2 died yesterday, after about 15 minutes of gameplay (on any game) the system would lock up, often with an audible beep. Ordered my coffin today from MS.

Oh god not again! Froze up twice in the past hour. Have had trouble starting up discs the last couple days. Fuck you MS.
Why, why, why did I buy AC, LWS, and COD4 on the 360. I should have learned from the first time.
I don't see how some of you can stand this... 6 - 7 failures... if this borks, it will be number two for me, and that will be two too many.

I saved my coffin from #1, will they let me just print a UPS label when the time comes?

Past few days it's been freezing every time i tried to play Halo 3 or Puzzle Fighter HD.

Today

I have a best buy replacement plan so.. i'm gonna use that. Bought it in Feb 2007. First one

Well my launch 360 is gone. Been getting off and on red rings for the last few days was hopping to get through the weekend.

So how does this work? I call up MS and they fix it or send me a new one? Also, do I just keep the HD and move it to my next unit?

Well, my 3rd 360 bit the dust. This one is really aggravating though because I have about 15 unwatched HD-DVDs and several new Christmas games. They estimated 3-5 weeks for repair, but I'm going to go out and try to hunt down a Falcon and just sell my replacement when it comes back. I'm not taking anymore chances, as this is the 3rd time I'm getting a replacement.

Are there any general tips for finding a Falcon? Are they more the norm now, or do you still need to be pretty diligent in finding one?

2nd 360 died over Xmas, playing mass effect and I got a disc error, now the 360 doesn't read any disc. Gotta arrange UPS collection in the new year...

This is my first replacemet so I get the joy of refurbs...

Yeah, it's quite a joy when your refurb is a yellowish tint because it was in some smoker's home. My first replacement was awful. As soon as I opened the box I could smell it and it was all yellowed. I can't believe they felt that it was ok to send one to me in that condition. Thankfully it only lasted a week before dying and my 3rd 360 looked pretty nice (still a refurb).

Wow. I'm waiting I'm my first replacement. I took excellent care of my unit...if I got something like that back I would definitely call and complain. I expect the one I get back to be in the same condition as my original console...I mean, I paid $400 for the damn thing. I was actually thinking about this the other night...I'll essentially be getting someone else's console. What if it's all scratched up and shit?

sent in my 2 dead ones three weeks ago and I got'em this week.

One is working for now.
The other one is scratching the hell out of discs. I got 2 discs scratched and I'm afraid to use any other discs now. Can I still call MS and have this fixed under warranty since this is a new symptom caused by their repair?

Repair number: Second

Reason for repair:
Scratched my copy of NHL08. (DVD-drive ran aggressively and loudly)
Date sent out: 12/17/2007
Date given back to me: 12/27/07
Manufacture Date of console given back to me: 12/10/2007

I just got mine back.
It smells brand new, with even plastic stickers protecting the faceplate. The disc drive is a Hitachi, which doesn't bother me since my launch system's disc drive was perfect and it was a Hitachi.

As new as the MFT Date is, there is no HDMI port. How can I tell which chipset I have?

I'd like to know this too. I just got my replacement console in today, and it was manufactured 11-29-07 but has no HDMI port. I thought they all have had HMDI for a few months now?

Yeah same here. My Manufacture Date is 12-6-2007 but I can't tell if it is a Falcon. Do they put new Manufacture Dates on Refurbished units?

i've been on the phone with ms for over an hour and a half trying to get it so i can play my arcade games on my second gamertag. They somehow can't find record of my last two 360 replacements and lost the reference numbers which is bullshit because i spent quite a bit of money on arcade games and it wasn't my fault the console shitted out on me twice, or my fault they lost the records of it...

I've actually been wondering this too.

I don't think we will ever be able to figure it out though.

My 360 was in mint condition. I'm very anal about my belongings and I take damn good care of them. I got some nicked up piece of shit back as a replacement. I can't wait until the bitch dies. It's been acting up the past week, so hopefully I won't have too long now.
From here on out I'm buying all my multiplatform titles on the PS3. Screw achievements, and online play.

I think my disc drive is about to give way. Over the past week whenever I start the console up with a disc in the drive it makes a noise, I dont really know how to explain the sound - maybe a thud? But It wasnt there before. Heres hoping when it inevitably dies that I dont get a cheap refurb! Turn around time shouldnt be too bad either, I hear its fairly good here in Australia.

what's the general consensus about about having the 360 vertical or horizontal? Is one position worse? Is it best to just have it in the horizontal position?

I would've complained about that shit, it's just nasty.

I got my refurb back this past Friday.

It seems ok, but the DVD-ROM is kind of janky. It's a newer Hitachi and sounds like my old one when it's "revving up", but it clicks quite frequently. The clicks are fairly loud, and in Assassin's Creed from time to time the music just "drops out" and comes back.

Does anyone know if the clicking is typical for the new Hitachis? I've been checking, and my discs aren't getting scratched or anything.

Having tried both, my 360 seems to get a lot warmer when I have it horizontally. Vertically doesn't seem too good for the DVD drive though, and the latter seems to be slightly louder.

In the end I still haven't decided which one was best but I doubt it matters that much. if it has to die, it will die.

Scratched disks, and artifacts. Another one bites the dust. I just got this unit in November, manufacturing date is 11/21/07, so much for that second heat sink.

I've just placed a repair order for my first broken 360. It happened when I started playing COD4. It froze up on me a couple of times. Then I got the RRoD a couple of times. Then on the third start-up, the RRoD was gone and it booted up normally, however, there was a green like tint discoloring going on in the game and on the dashboard. Powered down and powered back up again and now all I get is horizontal jagged blue lines and has been this way ever since.

My one-year warranty had expired by just three days and they wouldn't extend it. And since my 360 no longer displays the RRoD, the extended warranty doesn't apply.

Cost: $100.

Their customer service also sucks.

Got my old unit back from repairs and I took it straight to EB to trade it in for a new Falcon arcade. After the trade in and credit I already had it only cost me $60 to upgrade. The HDMI out makes a huge difference and while it is more quiet than my last unit, it still makes a good bit of noise. I got lot 746, it says 203w on the outside but it is 175W on the power brick. I'm going to register it now and buy the warranty from MS.

What was the trade in value without the HD, or did you trade that in too?

I got my 360 since november last year and never had any problems with it. The last few months however it has started scratching discs. The scratches aren't very big, maybe 3-4 millimeter long. These scratches do not prevent the games from working but it annoys the hell out of me. (i'm a bit of a collector and i want everything in as good of a condition as possible.)
I try to take very good care of all my gaming stuff and it pisses me of that brand new games are getting scratched by normal use. Take COD 4 for example, had it for 5 days and allready there are 3 scratches on it :-/

Is this shit covered under the warranty? and if it is, would you guys send it back for that? after reading all the horrorstories on here i am affraid i might even get a shittier xbox in return.

My 360 has 3 weeks and i had my first freeze today, playing blue dragon.....
Fucking fnac, i guess i havn't a falcon....

So one game crashes and your machine is going to die?
I guess you don't play a lot of software huh?

huhwha? You're jumping the gun here thinking that a freeze means you don't have the latest hardware.

1) You will not get an HDMI-equipped console back from the service center if you did not send one in that boasted an HDMI port.
2) Any North American consoles that get returned through the service center or retail do not have their manufacturing dates changed during the refurbishment process.
3) I don't believe I've seen any Falcon repairs cross my plate as yet... although if you send in a Falcon, I should imagine you'd want to get a Falcon back. The expectation is only set that you'll get an HDMI-equipped console back, however.
4) There's a very good reason as to why consoles with manufacturing dates as recent as November and early December have no HDMI capability and are returned via the repair process (whereas you'll never find such a system at retail - that does not negate Point #2).
5) Some long overdue improvements to the multiple repair process were rolled out in mid-December with little fanfare that should diminish the number of "dead shortly after arrival" consoles that find their way to customers following console exchanges... at least in the United States.
6) If you're going to buy a bunch of second-hand broken consoles off eBay for resale, don't send them in for repairs at the same time. You won't like the results.

I found that one funny too. The point I'm most happy about is five. The last two repairs I've gotten back were broken on arrival. My newest one I have not sent back since I wanted something to play over winter break, luckily the problem occurs only once in awhile.

I thought this was still covered in the 3 year warranty? i.e. they will still sort your 360 out even if the RRoD happens intermittently.

Did you say to them over the phone that the RRoD still happens but only now and again?

This is what I'm curious about. The console I just got back from repair has a mfg. date of 12/11/07; how much of the machine is actually new? It actually seems to generate more heat out the back than my old (launch/ 11-05 built) box, however the DVDs are barely warm after hours of play. On my old 360, the discs used to get so hot, I was afraid the glue holding the disc together would start to melt. :lol Hopefully this is a Good Thing, and this replacement 360 will live forever.

I'm concerned about the clicking noise the DVD-ROM is making, though.

At any rate, thanks for contributing. Any "war stories" would be awesome, and would add a bit of levity to a really depressing thread.
