Nanostray- The Nanothread

Remember guys, if we buy this one Shin'en will make a much better sequel.

*holds breath for Nanostray II and Iridion III*

Basically...

+Good graphics for an early DS title
+One of the few recently released shooters
+"Nonlinear" gameplay and nice, difficult challenge mode

-Checking out stuff on the second screen
-Big, polygonal enemies are harder to dodge

I like how the comments there give him grief for writing Majesco as the developer. How could he miss that though, the Shin'en logo is right there at the intro before he starts playing. This raises a important point; did he even play the game at all? Doesn't seem that way to me!

Find out what the real deal is, in the reply to this post.

A good shooter is all about getting zoned out and dodging enemy fire in a trance-like state. Nanostray is no different, but oops...if you want to swap weapons, you have to move both your eyes and your trigger finger to the bottom screen, where you toggle between guns by tapping the proper icon.
AHhahahahahahahahahahaha

Status indicators are also located on the lower screen, which means the action on the top panel is uncluttered...but it also means that you have to move your eyes a little too far from the action to keep up with your current shield and weapon status.
T_T

The game also suffers from that old, annoying problem endemic to 2D games in polygonal clothing, which is that the boundaries and edges of objects aren't nearly so clear as they were back when everything was made of nice, flat sprites. Since objects exist in three dimensions, they taper into the background and rise into the foreground. Knowing exactly where the actual edges of the ships are located can be difficult, making it awfully tough to gauge just how close you can drift to the bad guys and their streams of offensive fire.
Raystorm/Raycrisis redux

Add to that Halverson's soundtrack jizzing, and yeah, it sounds like a Shin'En game.

between the raystorm perspective and the mandatory touchscreen weapon switching, i think i can comfortably skip this. roll on mushihime and star soldier psp.

What are you jibber-jabbering about? The review text clearly states Majesco is the publisher and Shin'en is the developer.

This raises an important question; did you even read the review? Doesn't seem that way to me!

If you're talking about the meta-text at the top, I don't have anything to do with that... it was set in the system long ago by whoever entered the game into the database, which wasn't me. But it's showing up correctly, so I think maybe you're just hallucinating.

you know, given how badly nanostray wants to be silvergun, i wonder why it didn't just borrow the saturn version's six button control scheme. these token touchscreen implementations have to go.

Whatever happened to going into detail about a few of the weapons, the coin-based system that you upgrade/buy weapons with, secondary functions of weapons, a few details on boss battles? You know, give readers an idea of the actual game content and motifs of the levels...

And no mention of the multiplayer mode at all. I think review space would have been better spent on those particulars rather than 4-5 paragraphs on Majesco's financial standing, which most prospective buyers of Nanostray could care less about.

I agree. Just because the option is there doesn't mean that it has to be used. Especially since the L and R buttons are seemingly unused in the game. Silly if you ask me. At least give me some options.

This game is definitely solid. For a game like Nanostray, a shooter, to get 80% in reviews is what everybody should be expecting. Shooters haven't exactly gotten AAA reviews.

If anything, this shows how the DS line-up is getting better and better and how awesome the upcoming games will be.

And there it is. Lol, I am Nostradamus.

Yeah, what the hell was with that? I hate meandering intros that have nothing to do with the game. Awhile back, there was a thread here about what we like to see in reviews/previews. This is a good example of what NOT to do.

after noticing the comments, I went in and changed it to the proper developer. he'll have to find something else that's equally unimportant to jibba-jabb about now!

4-5? it's two, and they're rather short.

Why? I made you change it and is now at peace with the universe. Bwahah.

I dont like the wide bullets. It looks streched. The bullet patterns are also very weak; I think all those years of Cave shmups made regular shmups look borign :|

Teddman you rock! You always put phonies in their place. :lol :lol

This game is pretty nice so far. Switching weapons is not very intiutive since it's done via the touch screen. Thankfully L can also be used for firing a weapon. They really should have double tap L for sub weapon or something. And one of the face buttons isn't used so that could have been for cycling through weapons. I'll wait til I play it more before I bitch about the controls.

Oh, and Toys R Us seems to have it most everywhere. Only store in my area that has it.

WTF? I ordered it through amazon. today i checked on the status of the order, and shipping date says September 21 ????!!

Got mine last night (last copy at Toys'r'us) ----- So far it's a great little portable shooter, lots of influence for some weapons and enemy patterns from Ikaruga. --- It's every bit as solid as most shooters released recently

I'm no longer worried about DS's 3d capabilities --- This game has some awesome visuals for the most part, a lot having to do with some really good art for things like layered clouds and reflections --- draw-distance is pretty impressive in some levels, especially since everything is so zoomed before the camera flies out. The framerate is a solid 60, and doesn't really move away from that - the game will just slow down like an old-school shooter rather than skip frames.

The touchscreen takes some gettin' used to, but the weapon buttons are always in the same location so it becomes easy to switch on the fly.. The secondary fire for each weapon is probobly the most fun :) ---- Holding the R button down draws all coins to you... annoying since it should just be left on all the time ...... and because of this you never run out of secondary fire amunition.

Arcade mode is great, and logs your score for each individual level ---

--- So far I agree with IGN's score (the usually knocking off 15 points for it being a 2d shooter) ---
Now I want an awesome shooter on my PSP --- good visual style rotated to verticle screen :) (Star Soldier looks crappy)
