"America has driven a spike as it crosses the bridge into the future"

lol

Come on! No need for that nonsense.

It was a "golden spike." I don't have a problem with that kind of language when something as monumental as this happens. Thousands and thousands of people worked long hours for years to get to this point.

You care. Instill that passion onto your children one day. Its how we will eventually get to Mars and beyond.

Already do that. My son and I watch Cosmos, shuttle launches and other space related stuff every few days! But my son is only two years old! :)

Edit:
Also visit the CA Science Center where the Endeavor shuttle resides. Also has space toys and books!

Yes... I'm a space fanboy!

Good job NASA, perfect test flight through and through! They must be thrilled.

So the next step is SLS w/Orion in 2018, correct?

My interpretation is basically it's the foundation on which the bridge (flight to Mars) can be built.

Maybe yeah. But then that means they are crossing it before the bridge has been properly finished. They must be crazy. :p

Just wait until he has already driven the 'Golden Spike' in and the bridge has been properly tested first.

I wish I would have woken up. I can seemost rocket launches from my house. Watched many many shuttle launches growing up. This is awesome

Same here. There is nothing like experiencing your very first night launch. The imagery of night turning into day for that brief minute will stay with you for a lifetime.

I loved surfing off of Cocoa Beach when one of those Titan rockets would lift off. Sometime they made it, other times they would just go completely haywire and Flight Control would have to blow them up. Such a crap shoot back then.

On a clear day you would see a rocket go off, there I was, floating on my board in the lineup waiting for my next wave. You would actually see the sound/shock wave come screaming towards you, across the water, flattening any wave in its path. Amazing.

Such a great place to grow up. I miss it.

Sometimes... However, I don't even know what it means. WTF does it mean?

He said "America has driven a golden spike as it crosses the bridge into the future". This is a reference the ceremonial final spike made of gold used join the rails of the First Transcontinental Railroad across the United States connecting the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads on May 10, 1869.

Basically, it means the success of Orion has now connected the bridge from Earth to deep space.

No no lol, I have a cropped version of that image (I couldn'T find the proper sized version on google image).

Edit: Took a screenshot
As much as I'm happy with this launch, you don't take down the king for this stuff.
That's the problem with picking Apollo 11, you're stuck with it until the manned launch to mars.

:p

Haha yeah

I'll be looking for a couple of new full sized wallpapers for my PCs with the stuff we got today though.

I imagine that the onboard cameras too high res pictures too that they will publish soon.

Nah. I'm not really being serious about it.

Oh okay.

So what's the next step for Orion? 2018? Is there a discussion thread on GAF for space topics? Now I'm wondering when the next launch is between Space X or NASA. Looks like Space X has a resupply mission to ISS on 12/16. Falcon Heavy first launch is next year sometime?
