There was an article saying that the bandwidth for the current rovers on Mars is only ~35kbps and that's only thanks to one of the newer satellites in orbit. There just isn't enough bandwidth to do any real video. I imagine that's why what little video it's going to take will be in the single digit FPS
Yeah. We're chatting about it on IRC, and I concluded it might be down to the signal strength of the transmitter. That's the biggest bottleneck, I imagine. PEACE.

I just hope that cable seperates before the sky crane flys off,...

"It's landed!"... "It's taking off again"

That 7 minutes thing is crazy, by the time they get the data that it's hit the atmosphere, it will already have landed or crashed. D=

A mini-cooper is an SUV?

Well, im done with this, i guess you guys are arguing that NASA is wrong in saying that it is the size of a Mini-cooper, ok. Anyways, onto better things, go CURIOUSITY!!

It seems more like people have no idea how big and heavy cars are. My 2003 Honda Accord weighs 3400 lbs.

Wait is the live stream going to have video or pictures of the landing? Or is this just to see if they were successful?

It's probably just going to be people staring at screens cheering, and a 3D simulation in loop while two commentators comment.

Hence, delayed signal. I'm an engineer, guys. I understand physics. I'm wondering why the lunar landing has footage of the approach (we've all seen it), but I don't remember any of the Mars landings ever having video of said approach or landing. Delayed or otherwise. No one should expect live video much like we never got live video of the Voyager fly-bys. Just random musings on my part. Don't take it for more than it is. PEACE.
Bandwidth is a factor. For what it's worth, the rover will be capturing images of the decent that will be able to be turned into a 4fps video later. Apollo had more budget too. Video was easier because they had the money more power, less powerful transmitters, size, etc. Honestly, All you have to do is a little research to why there is no video involved in MSL. It's hardly a conspiracy.

I'm sure this has been pointed out but It's kinda cool that the same comp sim we're running on our comps is the one displayed in the JPL control room...nice touch nasa. I feel like we're all landing on mars lol

I truly hope that some time in my life that Europe, USA, China, and Russia band together to send humans to Mars. That would be completely amazing and jaw dropping.

This is gonna be great. Got a beer andthe eyes simulation up with the starship troopers theme ready to blast as it passes into the atmosphere. HYPE

Then I call shenanigans. :p

I'm just spitballing. It sucks that we honestly haven't had anything to crow about since the lunar landings. These Mars landings are so small in comparison, they go largely unnoticed. I'm one of 2 people out of 400 on my FB that even bothered to make note of it. PEACE.

Damn feed is breaking up, keeps freezing.

There's about 85,000 people on ustream atm!!

You have shown two pictures now that show that the Mini-Cooper is not an SUV, BAM.

That's a picture of the Mini Cooper Countryman, their SUV model.

Also, why the fuck are you still hung up on the SUV thing? You were wrong about the landing system, just deal with it.

You do realize that actual people aren't landing on Mars right?

Again, it has to do with the relative distance of earth to the moon versus mars. It really has to do with the "power" available. Space taken by a more powerful transmitter is space lost of other instruments.

Is there a calender when major space/NASA events are going to happen in the future?

It always seems like I only hear of this stuff happening a few days beforehand and would like to see what else is on the horizon, filtering the minutia of things like, you know, 'the moon is 5% brighter on this date' type small stuff.

Some politicians, I think it was last year, tried to ban us from collaborating with China on a mission like that. I'm not sure if it was written into law though.

Hi Lob. Since you believe the rocket solution is incorrect, please provide evidence an airbag solution is viable.

It wasn't. Curiosity is too heavy, whether is it the size of a mini or an SUV is irrelevant and a distraction.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Science_Laboratory#Landing

Curiosity was considered too heavy to use the airbag landing system as used on the Mars Pathfinder and Mars Exploration.

EDIT:
Please stop derailing the thread, i'm done with this. I would put up a picture of a real SUV not a crossover or mixed breed but let's stop derailing the thread.
Funny you accuse others of derailing the thread, but provide not evidence to back up your assertion that NASA could and should have used airbags for the landing.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
How fast will this thing go before reentry. It's already at 10300mph.

think they said it'll get up as high as 13000 mph before reentry or something.the atmosphere and parachute slow it down from there

Yes, but this is the biggest project for NASA since then. What was the biggest one before this, Cassigi-Huygen? I don't even remember if that was NASA or an international coop. You can't deny that NASA's PR f-ing blows. Dubya stated he wanted to put men on Mars by 2020, and people pretty much laughed. It would be easier to justify a bigger budget if people actually gave a damn. PEACE.
