Kind of surprised they have eating peanuts as a tradition with all the people out there that are allergic to them now, but I guess most of them would be too young to work at NASA yet.

Yes, but this is the biggest project for NASA since then. What was the biggest one before this, Cassigi-Huygen? I don't even remember if that was NASA or an international coop. You can't deny that NASA's PR f-ing blows. Dubya stated he wanted to put men on Mars by 2020, and people pretty much laughed. It would be easier to justify a bigger budget if people actually gave a damn. PEACE.

NASA has many missions going, sadly they just don't get press.

JUNO: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juno_(spacecraft)
Massive, 8,000 pound satellite going to Jupiter

New Horizons: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Horizons
First mission to Pluto. Will do a flyby then go the way of Voyager spacecraft into seep space research.

Not to mention craft that are still going strong, like Cassini.

How do you get people to give a damn when you don't have the budget to do anything other than send rovers?

Think big, promote...throw a damn bone. The public doesn't get enough back from these projects to say "hey...that was worth it." The lunar program was extraordinarily ambitious, even by today's standards. We live in a visual age, so even if it's to the detriment of other experiments, a priority needs to be placed on generating audio-visual media to be consumed by the masses. The lunar program would have been an epic fail if we didn't get the amount of visual data we did. Someone on chat said it best...it's a balance of PR and science. Right now, they need to emphasize PR more. They are in serious jeopardy of people just not caring...if that hasn't already happened. This thread should be massive given the science involved. As it stands...it'll be lost in the tape-delayed Olympic shuffle. PEACE.

LobLob, NASA is full of many people a lot smarter than you. They determined that this was the best way to land a rover of this size on Mars.

Will it suck if it fails? Of course. Any Mission failure is bad for NASA because of the mission costs. Does not change that they are all worth it.

Still Alive
8am here and pulling and allnighter. Can't wait. :DD Sleep deprived mind comes up with weird ass ways to pass time, this poem just came to me while listening to Major Tom and watching the countdown clock.

Earth.
As millions of people get ready for bed
And millions more for the morning ahead,
It will be voyaging through outerspace, instead.
And on the same path that its brothers' once tread;
The course that took them to mountainous deserts of red.
For the journey was long and all familiarities had fled,
The distance from home just continued to spread.
But while men on earth fight wars of the dead
It will be traveling through the dry lake bed,
And despite having a mind constantly fed
Curiosity's happiness will go unsaid..

So exciting, hoping everything goes well.

Seeing this kind of stuff is humbling. Makes me wonder what the hell I'm doing with my life.
