Can someone explain what happened today? I just heard about this from a bajillion twitter posts.
.....

Another Mars Rover landed on the planet Mars. After nearly a year of travel, we finally have eyes and means of research on the surface of mars again.

SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP

My name is on a microchip on the rover on Mars. :) :) :) :)

A lot of people here did that if I remember right? So cool to think about.

Yeah mine is on it three times, my name printed once, my signature, and my name in my handwriting (not signature). My wife's is too.

So happy. what an amazing day to be alive.

The touchdown was a bulls-eye, but my god, the missed high fives. Honkey town usa. Whatever, when you can land a car on mars with a fucking skycrane, you can miss all the terrorist fist jabs you like.

When landing the first men on the moon, no one thought about the American flag's proximity to the LEM and that famous flag from Apollo 11 was knocked over on takeoff.

So awesome that we are able to do this stuff. I hope we get some really exciting pictures and discoveries from this rover.

Cannot WAIT!

I'm drunk here watching all this with my xcoworker, shes into astrology.....having fun.

So happy for everyone there at Nasa. :)

For those of you talking about increasing funding for NASA, check out the Penny4nasa.org website. Regardless of whether you can donate or not, it has a handy tool to send a message off to your local congress people. I created a little message that might be of some help to people wondering what to write. Go ahead and change it how you want, but I think it could be a decent base for showing support. Send the link and message to anybody you want.
Doubling funding for NASA would be the least amount of support you could give to further not only the American people, but the entire human race. Not only would it cement the US's role in future space exploration, but it would be a grand opportunity to reach out a strong and steady hand to all other countries in joining together as one to ensure a rich and fulfilling future for us all. It is time for us as a country to evolve past wars and petty politics and realize how important NASA and its developed technologies have been and will be for us all. Transferring even a bit of funding to NASA would go a long way in rallying the American public. You must strike while the iron is hot, lest we devolve into bashing each others heads in over greed and cultural differences. Thank you very much for your time in reading this message from a concerned citizen.

Unexpected.

Less than $7 p/citizen? Goddamn

We seriously need some sort of nasa kickstarter to ride on the hype of this event.

If we can raise half a million dollars to send a bus monitor on vacation, imagine how much could be raised for space exploration.

Ugh, the whole "ONLY AMURICA CAN DO THIS" line was kinda annoying.

At least he kinda acknowledged the international involvement.

yeah, made me cringe as a non-American. especially considering it's not entirely American made.

but whatever... exceptionalists gonna exceptionalize i guess.

If anything, a NASA kickstarter might shame the government into increasing/not cutting any further the agency's budget.
