This is a human accomplishment. Countries are merely distractions - imaginary boarders which only serve to divide us. Humans did this.

While this stuff is sorta cool, is anyone else worried that we may be offending God by treading on holy ground?

I'm pretty sure there's a line of code that, shortly after landing, commands the rover to sing America's national anthem and then whisper a short prayer thanking God for landing the rover for us.

My sentiments as well. A worthy, inspiring accomplishment by humanity. Much love and respect to all those involved.

Exactly. So, please, cool it with the Anti-American stuff. Let us have this victory!

I didn't intend it to come across as Anti-American, but rather stress that the thing that happened tonight wouldn't have been possible just this way without international involvement...

... as that other team member just said. So all is good.

Guys, don't blow this out of proportion. But why restrict the proud to the USA if it was GLOBAL TEAMWORK that made this possible? Isn't that an even greater achievement, for all of mankind?

But, yeah, sure: It's a press conference and I get that they pretty much have to do anything to get out of this state of being seriously underfunded. And I support that.

Edit: This press conference is great all in all, by the way. I love their enthusiasm.

LOL @ THE QUESTION

for those that couldn't hear it

Taiwan reporter asked "if some international 10 y/o students can be allowed to control the rover."

lol

Don't know about other nations, but man it would be awesome to let some elementary or middle-school students send a command to Curiosity, even if they were 'preplanned' instructions. Talk about getting kids involved and inspired!

A bit saddened by the USA-bashing here. I'm not always the US's biggest fan but they certainly deserve the limelight today.

i don't think anyone was being "anti-American" (ridiculous term) or bashing USA as a whole... just annoyed by that one guy who said something like "only America can do this", implying that Americans are exceptional humans compared to the rest of us.

BUT sorry for shitting the thread a bit, i'll stop now. just that one guy was a douche, not all of America... i'm sure you understand how non-Americans don't like being told we're inferior. especially when we helped build essential parts of the rover, and have helped with previous NASA efforts.

i'll say it again though: GOOD JOB NASA. and goob job America for giving NASA enough funding to do this (i wish ESA got as much funding). next up James Webb Telescope.. may your good fortune continue.
