NBC & Disney Abuse YouTube Copyright Take Down NASA's Public Domain Space Launch

But because the numbskulls at NBC Universal work with the default mindset that everything must be owned, and if everything must be owned, then obviously anything that NBC Universal broadcasts must be owned by NBC Universal, it made bogus copyright claims on a ton of others using NASA's footageincluding NASA itself leading to NASA's own public domain video being blocked on NASA's own YouTube page.

And, that's not all. Having dealt with a bogus claim on Wednesday, one would hope that people would get their shit together for the actual launch on Saturday and the docking on Sunday. No such luck. Because for Saturday's launch, National Geographic, a property owned by Disney, did the same thing:

This is really fucking easy to fix. Take select trusted content creators and disable auto strike down on their videos, mandating that two human moderators review claims made against their videos. Hell, go even further and disable strike downs for governmental accounts.

automation is being abused in various ways recently. One example is because the "highest number" dictates what happens, like on google and youtube. You're right that there needs to be more real people looking at these things, but also take a second and think how much work that involves. I'm not sure a perfect solution exists, but it needs to be found. Copyright law also needs to be updated heavily to comply with the digital age and also to avoid trolls, which wastes everyone's time and money

they might as well remove all ads from the site and pay people to watch youtube, while we're asking for the moon

imo youtube exists at all on a thin veneer of making copyright holders money. Google would never in a million years risk shattering that. lol @ "trusted content creators" if they are doing this to NASA then that phrase has no meaning.

also hiring human moderators is undoubtedly more expensive than the bots they use.

I was able to go to Egypt for an art history class in college, and on the first day we went to the pyramid complex in Cairo. They told us no photos were allowed because a German company had purchased the rights. Obv we snuck shots in anyways. But that was a bummer to hear! This was at least a decade ago.

Sadly it’s just the way the world works. Copyright and trademark law are strangleholds on culture and have been even before the printing press was invented. People forget the original IP and mass brand was Catholicism, and Latin (also French, language of the ruling class) was the only accepted language for hundreds of years. If you tried to write your own version of the Bible in German they could lock you up and torture you and burn your writings in public as an example.

Kind of funny how in 2020 IP holders are still burning public media to enforce their own cultural hegemony. Then it was to preserve “the word of God” now it is in the name of “brand integrity”.

Funny how we even use the term “corporation” lol as is these are corporate entities. Yet for all practical purposes we treat them as, making demands of them, falling in and out of love. People love to big up “science” but behaviourally we are not too far from old time religion imo

I'm so very sick of copyright that I'm ready to see it fully abolished. WGAF how much money is lost in its absence. Tired of seeing the same mega organisms smacking us small humans down with our f'ing laws.
