it was decent. Definitely no 30 Rock. Not all the characters are particularly funny as of right now, but it was only the pilot.

30 rock was pretty shit in the first season. really hit or miss. didn't pick up til season 2. this is only the pilot for community, which was way better than the 30 rock pilot.

...so much is wrong here, I don't honestly even know where to begin. Primarily, WHY must we only love one show? Why must there be this hierarchy, with shows leap frogging others and fading away? I'm a gosh-darned TV critic and I'm more than capable of categorizing my love for shows as relative as opposed to competitive.

Why can't we all just get along?

...bu...b...but how can I feel as if my opinions are superior to other people's if I don't do that?

Jason Bateman is why there is love (or so much of it) for AD. The Office, because of Steve Carell. Community because... well, everyone. Parks and Rec--- Amy with a smirk and a smile wins over shameless rambling (though witty) Alec Baldwin rabbit trail.

I think it's fine to love or prefer one show over another because it's what makes you laugh or come back for more of it.

AD years after it's off the air.... it still makes me hurt in my sides from laughing. The Office... pretty much the same way.

Everyone's different and everyone's a critic too I might add.

This was a great outing for the show though and I hope it continues on strong.

After the first few minutes, where I was considering just stopping it, it got a lot better. The show definitely picked up once all the characters were introduced.

I think it has the potential to be a pretty good series.

As with everything....

Arrested Development set the bar > Office comes in a close 2nd > Community now kicks 30 Rock to the curb > Parks and Rec 1ups 30 Rock > 30 Rock slowly fading away.

This is the first sitcom I'll keep watching in a long time.

I know it's Astrolad, so I'm hoping Wings was a joke. Real answer is to put News Radio after AD.

yeah, but the big difference is that when I watched 30 Rock, I knew it was potentially going to be one of the better comedies on television (in its first season it won and was nominated for several awards).

With Community, I'm not 100% sold. It was only the pilot, but I hope for a lot of growth out of the show since I haven't been a big fan of The Office since S2, don't like Parks & Recreation, I did like My Name Is Earl, and the SNL stuff hasn't lived up to my lofty expectations and want NBC to at least be competitive with quality shows on TV.

Edit:
I'm looking forward to seeing how Ken Jeong plays out over the course of the series. I often find his humor to be annoying when he gets too much screen time (Role Models), so I hope he's playing a well-reserved role throughout the series.

It's a great start, but the show is gonna be in some serious trouble around season 3, when they have to explain why they're sticking around a 2 year college longer than they have to be.

Unless they take these plots reaaaally slow.

Shows adhering to the time advancement of reality is silly anyway.

Whatshisface said something about a 4 year degree.

Well if we go by the pilot, the entire episode is in one day. Take a semester and you have 4.5 months of classes. 4 weeks in a month times 5 days is 20 days. So we have 90 episodes for just the first semester. Multiply that by 4 semesters (not including any possible summer semesters they might have) and that comes out to 360 episodes. Take 360 episodes and divide them by a stanard season of 18 episodes and you have about 20 seasons worth of Community! It'll be the next simpsons.

Loved it. So happy to see Chevy back doing something... anything. Some of the "characters" are a little too much. They should tone down a little of their "caricature" otherwise, I'm going to enjoy this show.

Random reason why my friend didn't like it: "everyone was in their 30's. there were no younger college aged kids".

Yeah that's why she didn't like it.

Eh, I wasn't really feeling it all that much. The scene where they all start bickering with each other was cringe-worthy, especially the super serious brunette girl. Chevy and the black dude laughing about "ass-burgers" was probably my favorite part.

Not going to pass judgment yet, other than to say that I can already tell it isn't close to the level of AD.

Finally finished it. I did like one gag, when the otherwise unfunny Aspergers kid thinks he's deaf. So that's one more successful gag than most shows have.

But P&A was way better this week. I'll give it a shot next week, as I see it having the opportunity to build on its hope from small places as opposed to Glee, which I should have seen it's drop from a great two episodes in the start from a mile away.

The guy from Derrick Comedy was my personal favorite, but the pilot was good enough all around to warrant me watching it for at least a few episodes.
He's the main reason I decided to watch this, but yeah, most of the cast fit very well.

Will it be just a semester? Wont you take the easy way out for four years?

Thats what he said
Got ya. So we heard both four years and semester in the same conversation. I have to watch the episode again. I really liked it, and I want to see what else I missed. God, I so hope they put background stuff in every episode.

I liked the pilot even though some of the jokes were a bit too forced.

But one question, is John Oliver always that way? Because it was like he was channeling Alan Partridge. I half expected him to be driving a Rover instead of the Smart car. It's the biggest distraction for me in an otherwise good cast.

John Oliver is always that way, it's basically not a character.:lol

We just watched the pilot over lunch at work, and everyone liked it; there's a ton of potential here once the characters have time to develop, and I love the rapid-fire pace. I'm already seeing things in this thread that I didn't notice during the episode, which gives me hope that this will be one of the rare shows that really holds up to repeat viewings.

When exactly is that because I gotta remember to change my PVR to record the new time slot?
Don't those change automatically as long as it's on the same channel? My TiVo does. As does the piece of shit Comcast DVR in the living room.

Just saw it, man that was good. Started ok, but then got really good in the last half.

McHale was great, I hope his character stays more selfish and shallow and assholey instead of sensitive and friendly.

And the blonde chick is gorgeous.

I didn't really think this would be good so I didn't watch it last Thursday but I watched it on Hulu yesterday and it was awesome. Joel McHale plays a great main character.

New episode tonight!

Just a few quick words about tonight's episode of NBC comedy Community ("Spanish 101"), the series' second outing. I had the opportunity a few weeks back to watch the second episode of this hilarious new series and loved every second of it.

So why should you tune in to tonight's episode of Community, when the airwaves are positively overcrowded with televised offerings? Here are five reasons why.

(1) If you liked the pilot, you'll love this even more.

If you enjoyed the hysterical pilot episode of Community, you'll love tonight's episode even more. Free from having to set up the group's situation and first meeting at Greendale Community College, tonight's installment has a lot more fun with the low-key academic setting, further building out the world of Greendale and strengthening the relationships between the characters.

(2) It focuses on some of the supporting characters.

While Community is an ensemble comedy, a lot of the action of the first episode centered around the flirtation between Joel McHale's Jeff and Gillian Jacob's Britta. While Jeff and Britta play a large role in tonight's episode, the spotlight also gets to shine on several of the other characters as Alison Brie's Annie and Yvette Nicole Brown's Shirley get a subplot involving political protest and Chevy Chase's Pierce gets to bond with Jeff when they're paired together for a Spanish project. Which brings us to...

(3) Ken Jeong.

Tonight's episode of Community marks the first appearance of Ken Jeong's imperious Spanish teacher Senor Chang, easily one of the most terrifying and funny professors ever to grace the small screen. Jeong has cornered the market on playing absurd, eccentric, or creepy characters in both film and television and he adds a dangerous, quixotic element to the mix here. His language lesson in tonight's episode (he claims 90 percent of Spanish is using your hands) is gut-bustingly comical and alone is worth the price of admission.

(4) Aimee Mann's "Wise Up."

The award for the best usage of Aimee Mann's song "Wise Up" ever goes to Community for its inclusion in tonight's episode. I won't spoil just how or why it's used but will say that I was rolling on the floor after seeing

(5) It's just plain funny.

And, really, what more do you need than that?

Can't wait to see Ken Jeong's role.
